Guest guest
Sorry this is SUPER long: So for about 4 years now I have helped to run a community fashion show that showcases local talent. We were going to stop doing the show, but a big sponsor contacted us, so we agreed to give it a final run. Then the drama starts. . . There are 3 main people involved in the show. To be honest, I do the majority of the work (the director agrees - he tells everyone that). I am in charge of the marketing, but I typically book most of the talent, I bring in most of the sponsors, I keep communications flowing and I usually end up keeping our very type B director organized, on time and on track. So anyway, last fall I resigned the show because of the way the backstage was being run. The girl in charge of it had 2 helpers who were screaming at the models, creating a chaotic environment, and treating our volunteers like they are stupid. They also wouldn't allow the dancers back stage, even though it was like 50 degrees outside and they were only wearing shorts for their costumes. The show was also planned at a bad time for me. I agreed to come back this spring under the conditions that the two " model nazis " not be invited back. I asked that we replace the bitchy girl in charge of the back stage, the leader of the model nazis. The director of the event really wanted her to come back, so after voicing my concerns, I agreed to this. I didn't feel good about it and I told him so, but he has never seen that side of her and also he felt he could keep her under control. Fast forward about 6 weeks to 10 days before the show (yesterday). I passed off everything the backstage bossy chick needed to coordinate the models, shops, designers, hair, makeup, runway choreography etc months ago. I ended up planning all this by myself because the director was involved in another event and he didn't have time (a sorry excuse but anyway that's how it worked out). He also hadn't yet decided who would run the backstage, so it was only the 2 of us at that point. I knew the backstage nazi bitch bossy chick would be mad about the way I did it - we brought in real women from our community to model, thinking this would add a level of depth to the show. Most of the real women are friends/professional contacts of mine - so that increased the pressure, because I wanted them to have a good experience. Anyway, the runway bitchy girl hasn't done her job at all. She has had since about May 6th to get everything organized. Her job is fairly easy. She needs to pair the models with designers, tell them what time to get their hair done and have them try on the clothes in advance. Then she lines them up and tells them when to walk, and makes sure they change fast the night of the show. SHE HAS NOT DONE THIS AT ALL. I've e-mailed her about 5 times a day for the past 5 weeks asking her for status updates. She says she just hasn't had time etc etc. And then. dun dun dun - I found out she invited her minions back - 2 controlling girls who get in the models faces and scream. Uh. . . yeah this behavior doesn't fly with girlscout. (Our models are volunteers - why should they put up with being yelled at?) So, anyway, then the director went out of town, and while he managed to make our deadlines from the road, he wasn't taking care of the personell problem. He tends to really avoid conflilctual situations and let problems do way way way too long. So yesterday I set a boundary. I sent the director an e-mail saying - here's what I have done. All this other stuff hasn't been done. What is your plan for resolving this problem, because I can't wait anymore. This level of disorganization is becoming extremly embarassing to me. Then I sent the runway back stage bitch a message. HEre it is: " Umm I’m trying to print up Jordan’s (our best desinger) models and their contact info for tonight but my phone died with all the contact info so I won’t be able to do that (this is her job by the way). To tell you the truth PR for the event is extremely busy right now. I have 4 huge live interviews this week each with a fashion show and 3 models each. I’m getting really concerned that the models, designers and shops are confused but I don’t have time to help. What do we need to do to get this done? I’m esp concerned because so many of friends are modeling for the show as a personal favor to me. I don’t want to leave them with a disorganized impression. " I sent this about 4 p.m., our mixer event - where everything is supposed to already be organized - and we just go over details with the models designers and stylists was at 7 p.m. I knew we weren't prepared. I was upset so boyfriend and I then went to dinner and had a little fun to relax. Just as we pulled up to the mixer we got this email from the runway bitch: " Well Girlscout, I’m trying my best, but this was disorganized when you gave it to me. Designers that won’t confirm that they are even interested in doing the show. A list of models that half of them aren’t even doing the show. Designers who were supposed to be finding their own models only to have some drop out and are now asking me if I can find them one. Sorry I’m not doing this the way you want it done. I’ve tried contacting the designers and models that you gave me, but apparently they only contact you. The few models and designers I have had contact me have only done so after you’ve asked them to. So why don’t you just go ahead and handle this the way you’d like it handled. Since you feel the job I am doing isn’t meeting your standards please feel free to take charge of getting the models and designers coordinated. From the beginning it has seemed as though you’d like to take charge anyway. Be my guest. " So, I walked into a crowd of models and designers having just had someone elses job dumped right in my lap. She texted the director and said she wasn't coming because we didn't need her. So the next few hours were total chaos - question after question after question. I ended up having to ask each designer who they had been assigned for models - because bitch didn't share that with me. Half of them hadn't been assigned anyone. And none of the models had any information. And I had no idea what was going on. It was embarassing, and to tell you the truth I just put it right back on the bitchy girl. I said, " I'm sorry I can't answer that our backstage coordinator dropped the ball and now she quit, so please help me reconstruct what she did and I'll get the show back on the road. " Anyway - how I feel today 1) Of course I wish I hadn't taken on the show because now basically 90% of it is resting in my lap. 2) I think the runway girl is extremely immature and has only been involved in the show for her ego. She loves to give me orders and boss me and others around, meanwhile she batts her eyelashes at the runway director and fakes like she is really sweet - playing both of us like the alpha bitch dog she is. 3) I feel proud that I set a boundary. I've stayed professional. 4) The director wanted to call her today and smooth things out and try to get her to come back. i said that's fine but if she comes back I'm out because she is difficult to work with and not doing her job at all. 5) Of course, I feel guilty like I must have done something wrong to make her so angry and like a nice girl woulnd't do that. These are the tapes from my childhood saying others feelings are more important than mine. I'm trying to control them with affirmations. I have 2 fashion students who are going to run the back stage now. I'll reconstruct everything, send it to them, and talk to them about important steps and let them put their own flair on it from their. So anyway, that's my update. Therapy has brought me a really really long way. I ended it by sending her an email that said " I'm releived that you are resigning the show because working with you has become a huge obstacle. Good luck in your future efforts. " Stay classy san diego HA HA HA Thoughts? Opionions? Etc??? I think if she didn't have time to do the show - why would she commit? Oh yeah, ego, power, authority, etc.
Guest guest
Well, I say if you feel good about it, then F'in A, good job! (I say it with that premise because I feel like there's a level of tone and detail to this kind of story that we could never get from a forum post.) I think what's great is that in this story, there are a number of times where you try to say: this is what I need, and finally, when you realized your needs were never going to be met, you said: if she comes back, I'm out. You drew the line in the sand. Good for you. I really wish we could all have the foresight to say that in the very beginning, but you took care of yourself, and that's awesome. Chocolate for all! > > Sorry this is SUPER long: > > So for about 4 years now I have helped to run a community fashion show that > showcases local talent. > > We were going to stop doing the show, but a big sponsor contacted us, so we > agreed to give it a final run. > > Then the drama starts. . . You did exactly what GOODtherapy teaches KO's to do... re-wires us to recognize, accept and act on OUR emotions and needs first. We were all stripped of that survival instict. Seems you got your backs in spades! I like to think of it as having someone else's emotiona dumped in my lap, I look at it like a dead animal, wrap it and hand it back to them. Period. If they don't take it, I drop it in front of them and walk off. I don't debate, I don't talk, I don't try to reason. " Return to Sender: Not at this address! " You 'done' good!! Guest guest
Chocolate!!!!! And I love you guys. Thanks for the support. Here is her latest e-mail -raging. I am debating - option a) Ignore or send her a note, wish her luck and ask that she not contact me again. " Are you joking? I’m the obstacle to work with? So then you are oblivious to your diva behavior over the last year or so. You push your Crowell clients and friends on stroll, no one can have a differing opinion than you, and stroll dates have to be changed because you are too busy. You act like you run stroll. I’ve volunteered for about 4 years now. The only one without something to gain. Matt had the store and it brought in sales and awareness, you used clients and were able to essentially be paid by your own job, or used it as a networking tool to bring in more clients. All of this is great, I’m not saying there is anything wrong with this, but I did stroll because I believed in the local designers and love being able to showcase the talent we have in SLC that are very underestimated. I didn’t get paid, I wasn’t doing it for a job. You always talk about treating our volunteers well and being sure that we thank them. So how do you treat me? You send me a bunch of bitchy emails. Awesome…. Guest guest
If you have to respond, I would just say: " Thank you for your feedback. Best of luck in your future endeavors. " And just let her stew. I think she wants to draw you into an argument to defend herself. Sounds like she likes drama. Don't give it to her. As Lynette said, drop it in her lap and walk away. I love the drama queens. > > > > > > > > Sorry this is SUPER long: > > > > > > > > So for about 4 years now I have helped to run a community fashion show > > that > > > > showcases local talent. > > > > > > > > We were going to stop doing the show, but a big sponsor contacted us, > > so we > > > > agreed to give it a final run. > > > > > > > > Then the drama starts. . . Guest guest
Oh Lynnette, this image is absolutely freakin' excellent! ... " I like to think of it as having someone else's emotiona dumped in my lap, I look at it like a dead animal, wrap it and hand it back to them. Period. If they don't take it, I drop it in front of them and walk off. I don't debate, I don't talk, I don't try to reason. " It sums up SO WELL how I want to be handling the crisis with my Mom from now on. " Not mine! It is not mine! Not my responsibility! Gotta go " The dead animal is right on too, because I often feel like " Oh God. What am I gonna do with this now? " when my BP Mom loses it. As for the last email you got. You could respond to it in a very polite manner, short and sweet. Like " I am sorry you felt that way. However I do feel that you didn't handle your assignment in a professional manner. Best of luck "
Guest guest
Hi Girlscout: I thought you very professionally and clearly gave us the problem. In my view, this seems rooted your boss' lack of involvement in the project. I could TOTALLY relate, because I would take on similar projects where there was big time chaos and I would step in and fix things. Not sure if that's part of the dynamic we are all used to, but it's familiar to me. AND that boundary thing was really great! We all have to try to make things work with people we cannot control and motivating people who aren't getting paid is really hard. Maybe after the dust settles, you could have a little sit down with your boss and tell them what happened, in your own words, rather than have just one side of the story come out. Your challenge is BG in charge of BS is attacking your credibility by saying you were disorganized...the whole idea was SHE was supposed to take the " stuff " and organize it, but didn't seem to want to do that at all. Defining the role you/your boss thought she should be playing. Maybe that needs clarifying, for everyone, including BG in charge of BS. ________________________________ To: wtoadultchildren1 <WTOAdultChildren1 > Sent: Wed, June 8, 2011 7:33:49 AM Subject: whoa I set a boundary and the earth cracked!!!!!
Guest guest
Super! Ok, so take my 'dead animal' imagery one step further... You don't waste your time explaining to the other person that the animal is dead. You don't sit and devise ways to revive, handle, etc. said dead animal. You just give it back/put it down. It's not YOUR dead animal, after all.... So don't email this woman back. Don't respond at all. The BEST and most EFFECTIVE response is silence. Period. If you don't engage, you don't provide material for the other person to weaponize and use against you at a later date. You've said what you've said. The animal is dead. Walk away and stay away. Guest guest
Thanks guys. So tempting to respond. . . but I didnt' I'm glad I have you guys support. It is hard not to take on the " diva " and " bitchy " things and roll around in it and own it. I know I wasn't bitchy, I just asked her to do her job. She said no. So I said good luck to you I will take it from here. On Wed, Jun 8, 2011 at 11:10 AM, yp_lynnette_cameron_park < h_l_maston@...> wrote: > > > Super! Guest guest
I like what Lynette had to say. Don't respond. At all. Otherwise, it's like saying, " Well, on second thought, that dead animal looks mighty tasty! " and then chowing down on the carcass. :$ > > Hi Girlscout: I thought you very professionally and clearly gave us the > problem. Guest guest
Exactly! That's just it... what THEY are so eager to " Give " to you in a really a " present " that just is a reason to engage and fight. Um... no thanks. Those " gifts " suck! Guest guest
Hey Girlscout, What a mess! Sorry you are having to face all this on your own. Just remember, what doesn't break us makes us stronger (and gives us material for updating our resumes!). My take on the runaway coordinator: she's incompetent, talks a big game and hides her incompetence behind hiring people who do the work for her. When you wouldn't let her bring in her support group from last year, she knew she isn't able to meet the commitment and bailed. She probably has a big degree she hides behind too, but she's useless without having people she can delegate the real work to. Your boss was taken in by her 'act' -- I've seen this before, poor fool. I was an Office Manager for a consulting firm that hired a crack-shot marketing whiz. She was hired in for double my salary and given a fancy title. She had come from major corporation where she had lots of support (i.e., ass covering). It took about 18 months, but she finally proved herself to be a big phony no-nothing that couldn't deliver, while running up a huge expense account. The boss finally realized his error and actually disbanded the firm. > > Sorry this is SUPER long: > > So for about 4 years now I have helped to run a community fashion show that > showcases local talent. > > We were going to stop doing the show, but a big sponsor contacted us, so we > agreed to give it a final run. > > Then the drama starts. . . Guest guest
Wow, good for you!! You are FIERCE! Yeah, there are people like runway model who just sign up for stuff like this just to be able to say they did it -- and do absolutely no work. You rock!! I'm really impressed; this sounds like it was no small feat.
Guest guest
Thanks guys - I had nightmares about it all night. The director keeps putting more stuff in my lap and i " m getting pissed. I feel like I must be such a bitchy diva. . . . . . after all I told her that it wasn't working for me to have the show so unorganized. One more work and this mess will be over and I think there is about a 90 percent chance that I will never do another event with the director again. I told him not to bring her in, that she is aggressive and lazy. He did anyway, and even after she quit he wanted to go chase her down and bring her back. I'm like - why? So we can wait on her and have the whole thing fall apart? > > > Wow, good for you!! Guest guest
OHOHOHOHOOH! Say it with me kids.... TRIANGULATION! You're being played! And you're an unwitting player in a game you didn't set up. The Director did. The Director knew he would be unable to fulfill the duties of his commitment. So he brings in ego-needy BitchyDiva to do it for him. You are there and know the players (and are a known workhorse) so he thinks he's home free. Conflict erupts. He doesn't care as long as the job gets done and his names is THE highlighted feature. He calls it " delegation " . What he didn't anticipate is that YOU would set boundaries. BAG GIRLSCOUT BAD! (giggle) So you said, " NO! " And it all went to hell. Now he's blaming the failure of 'stuff' on you and her... she leaves/ you stay... guess who carries the lion's share of blame? Not the BitchyDiva but the accessible one. She has strategically removed herself and thus is now the most desired player on the planet. If only he could get her back..... Meanwhile.... GS is a BAD BAD BAD girl for causing all this drama because she broke character/mold of what Director had set up. The solution? 1) GS quits, 2) GS goes back into 'suck it up' character and never comes back again or 3) GS does what KO's do... all the work, all the blame and comes back for more hoping, " Things will be different next year " but knowing they never will be... What's it gonna be babe? Lynnette > > > > > > > Wow, good for you!! Guest guest
Soooo wise advisors This is my problem - I am not the director of this show. But the models, sponsors, vintage shops, performers, musicians and fashion designers who are involved are all my friends - and they are doing it for me. I would walk away now - but I feel like I would be burning bridges with about 20 of my best friends. I wish I had never taken this on. When it started, we had a $6,000 sponsor. The director asked me to deposit the sponsorship money in my business account because he just closed his business and I was just in the process of opening mine. So I felt like it was a joint show - and that I would be making a lot of decisions as well as writing the checks However, when it came time to sign paperwork for the event he balked for so long that I backed out and said I wasn't comfortable handeling the money because it was clear that he wasn't comfortable having me do that. At that point I started to set a lot of boundaries and refused to take on a bunch of things. But, I had already recruited all the models, performers and talent long before thinking it was basically going to be my show and my responsibility. So now I feel like I got screwed over. And I'm stuck with all of my relationships on the line and none of the control of the event. I'm between a rock and a hard place. What do I do next? Guest guest
Wow. I wish I had some wisdom for you. I guess would just do the very best I could do with the parts I did have control over, and try to make it the best show possible under the circumstances, and then never, ever do anything like it again. I'd use it as a learning experience. -Annie > >> > > >> > > > >> > > > >> > > Wow, good for you!! Guest guest
I am so sorry, sweetie. Your choices are limited--save face for the sake of your friendships at a great personal/emotional expense, or burn your bridges and hope your friendships understand and stick by you. I can't tell you which way you should go--since either way you stand to lose something big. Either way, when it is over and the dust settles this whole affair will provide you with a lot to process and a lot of personal growth. The director is a big ass, which you new going in but hoped for a better outcome because you thought you had more *control* of the situation than turned out to be true. Familiar tune, different players (non family). DO NO beat yourself up! Learn from it instead. You are not alone: we all 'go to what we know', hoping for a better outcome since the conditions are different. One thing that probably aided you in having an illusion of control was by enlisting your friends. But since they have no actual say in the venture this didn't help you. > >> > > >> > > > >> > > > >> > > Wow, good for you!! Guest guest
Thanks guys. . . XOXO I might just recruit help from my friends. I've got a couple of offers. Involve the director as little as possible. Make the show happen. And then never work with any of these people again. UGH thanks love ya > > > I am so sorry, sweetie. Guest guest
That's a real tough one. I can't think of much aside from sending an email or something explaining what's going on and expressing your appreciation for their help, and distress at what it turned out to be. Maybe invite them all over for a celebratory/thank you shin dig? > > Soooo wise advisors > > This is my problem - I am not the director of this show. Guest guest
Hey guys, I took the tiger by the tail and got the show organized. I appeared on a tv show today to talk about it. It is all going well now, I think I've got it back on track after 2 days of totall hell. But I'm never ever doing another one of these shows with this director. Talked to boyfriend last night and if I ever run another fashion show, I'm going to be the director. No sense in being the one running it all and having someone else take the credit at the end - too much like a dysfunctional family - where the child is really the parent unless you are out in public and then you pretend that mom is in charge. Thanks so much for the support, too. I got to see my T yesterday ( she had major surgery and has been out for a while, poor thing) She reminded me that the girl who was a bitch to me and quit in a huff is not an important person in my life, her opinions don't count in my life. She says the girl is stuck in a developmental stage from aroudn age 12 to 14. I can let her opinions float away. I really do feel like kind of a diva - but hell I'm good at this stuff, like really really good at it - so why not own that and say eff off to the people who are holding me back and slowoing me down. I've got dreams to acheive - I dont' have time for that BS. XOXO > > > That's a real tough one. > > I can't think of much aside from sending an email or something explaining > what's going on and expressing your appreciation for their help, and > distress at what it turned out to be. > > Maybe invite them all over for a celebratory/thank you shin dig? > > > > > > Soooo wise advisors > > > > This is my problem - I am not the director of this show.
