Guest guest
Hi all, Just a thought on the staring and what may seem like rudeness, I think sometimes people are taken back by how well we manage and the things we do and that is why they stare, not to be rude or mean. Sometimes they are generally curious as to why someone so young may have problems getting around or walking or whatever the case may be. Also a lot of times people have never been exposed to someone with a disabilitiy all the more reason we need to be out in the world doing whatever it is we need or wan to do. There was a time when handicapped people were locked away and not allowed out, hey in the 50's pregnant women didn't go out much. We need to be out there and educate people about people with disabilities. Curiousity is part o f human nature it is how we learn and grow, it is natural and normal. So like someone else said just give people a big smile, a smile is one of the things we can give away and the more we give away the more we get back, so hang in there. Also welcome to the group Maureen and all the other new people and no one is saying anyone is wrong this is a place where we can all voice our feelings and opinions and share and grow isn't it great!!!! Guest guest
Donna, you are so right, People as curious and it just are nature to stare. I've had this over 10 years now and yes in the beginning the stares did bother me. Made me nervous to be different. Made me stiffen up to! Now I've learn to just say " Hi " and smile and go about my way. Most people are polite in helping me especially opening those bathroom doors in a store or restaurant. Why do they make them so heavy? Doug usually goes to push the door open for me but going out I can usually catch someone to hold it open. On are way back from the Carolina's we stopped at Burger King. Doug didn't notice that I went to the restroom and I had trouble with the ladies door and a man came out of his restroom and saw how much trouble I was having so he held it open. Another first for me!!.................Flora
