Sent from the Internet _(Details)_ (aolmsg://0686e048/inethdr/2) When I set out to do the very first walkathon in Virginia of 2001. A friend of mine from the Cystic Fibrosis walkathon in our town gave some great advice. She said the walk location itself is to get people to learn about the disorder and to get the word out. It helps for media coverage and others aspects of becoming more known to the general public. However to get funding to research it is the patients and the letters that they write compelling others to act on their behalf that makes all the difference in the world. I took her advice and designed a two part walk/letter writting campaign we now call Teamwalk/ by Proxy. For us it has meant a great deal and the work was not in vain. Today this effort grows exponetially each year proving that learning from the experience of others is vital and that we can succeed. This year we have added a few things to help individuals with their campaign. Even so keep in mind the most important part of this event is to write letters.Plus you can designate funds this year. I have enclosed some letter and page examples plus fundraising ideas to help those with interest. We also have Teamwalk Pages that use pay pal and you can create your own similiar to these examples. It will give an internet access and the use of paypal credit cards to help in other ways. Here are the links to those examples. Dear Family and Friends, As you know we have an annual walkathon known as Teamwalk. Funding for research is critical to finding a cure and much has already been accomplished. As you know our gene was discovered in 2001. Since then the have learned a great deal about the biochemistry. This particuliar gene is part od the dynamin family and lends insights to other types of disorders such as ALS. Today they are moving even further along to understand the function of this gene and this answer will lead to possible treatments. We have thirteen family members with Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia three of which are my own Children. As you know my birthday is just around the corner and I will be $35. So for this year would you please send $35 with a form from this site: http://www.sp-foundation.org/donate-print.htm. Credit card donations can be made at this site. http://sp-foundation.org/Teamwalk04/shellie.htm The only thing between a treatment/cure for Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia is dollars. Please help get us there as fast as we can. Here are a few tips and suggestions to help get you underway.. You can always combine a few ideas - For example, if you do a car wash or walk-a-thon, consider combining it with a little " extra " - sell doughnuts, lemonade, lollipops or other " goodies " for a little additional money. If you're planning a fundraising event and would like help please contact me. Fundraising Activities • Raffles - If you can get something of value donated to your cause, sell raffle tickets for it. Ask a local artist to donate a work of art, or find a company that will donate a special service - a " day of beauty " at a beauty spa, a housecleaning by a cleaning service, etc. • Bake Sales - A great activity for an office or church group. • Blue Jeans Day - Ask your office to sponsor a " blue jeans day " if they don't normally permit employees to wear blue jeans. Charge a fee to people who want to wear jeans, and provide a tag, sticker, or ribbon to identify those who have paid the fee. • Rummage Sales - Have a rummage sale at your office or church, or sponsor a yard sale. Ask people to donate items, with the proceeds going to your designated organization. • Gift Wrapping - Ask local shopping areas or stores if you can set up a gift wrapping table at Christmastime. Just like regular gift wrapping stations, you can charge different amounts for different levels of wrapping. • Other Special Services - An interesting idea I saw on a fundraising site was to set up a booth at a golf course that is holding a golf tournament (with the golf course's permission, of course!). Set up a table where you can offer to clean golf clubs and balls, and/or sell raffle tickets for a prize to be drawn by the end of the tournament that day (a golf prize, or perhaps a cash prize - a percentage of the amount raised?). Events • Walk-a-thons - A walkathon takes quite a bit of planning, and there are many legal issues involved. We hope to use the Virginia HSP Walkathon (n September) to organize a " game plan " for walkathons. In the meantime, here are a few Internet sites that offer some detailed information on organizing a Walkathon, just to give you an idea: o Kiwanis - http://www.kiwanis.org/organizing_a_walkathon.html o Sample of organizing notes for a walkathon: http://www.ln.edu.hk/ssc/info/hostel/shmc/document/shmc_doc_978p012.htm o NFS Bike/Walkathon information: http://www.northsouth.org/walkathon.html • Car Washes - Get step-by-step instructions from The CarWashGuys: How to Run a Car Wash Fundraiser: http://www.carwashguys.com/fundraisers/LAschools.html • Barbecues, Picnics, Breakfasts, Dinners - sponsor a " meal " as a fundraising event. You can either charge for the food, or charge an admission fee. Add a raffle or auction to raise additional funds. • Games - Hold fun or silly games that the community can participate in. For example, you might do a " Gimp-ics " with silly versions of those International Games (that I can't mention by name due to trademark infringement), or some unusual version of a popular sporting event in your area. When holding a community event, ask for publicity from local radio stations, TV Stations, and/or newspapers. Invite the employees of the station or newspaper to participate - perhaps this can become an annual event! Product Drives Product drive fundraisers are those where you sell products to individuals, which you purchase at a reduced rate, or where a company donates a portion of proceeds from a catalog sale to your organization. The best results are when there is a large number of people who are participating in the drive. The links at the bottom of this page can direct you to many available products for fundraising. Party Plan Sales Some companies that normally sell their products through home sales or parties may be willing to allow a percentage of the proceeds of a party to go to your charitable organization. Check with organizers for companies like Avon, Amway, Tupperware, Pampered Chef, etc. National Companies Promoting Fundraising Efforts Some national chains have special programs to promote fundraising efforts in the community. They may offer a percentage of proceeds to your charitable organization, match contributions you raise, or offer coupon books that you can sell. • Papa Gino's Papa Gino's is a pizza chain located in the New England area. Their Community Fundraiser Program offers groups the opportunity to solicit people to visit Papa Gino's during a specific time period. During that pre-determined period, guests are encouraged to purchase from a specific Papa Gino's location. When they make their purchase, they present a Papa Gino's Fundraiser flyer for their group. In turn, Papa Gino's will donate 20% of the guest's entire purchase to the benefiting group. The donation is valid on dine-in and carry-out only, provided the person making the purchase presents a fundraiser flyer. Any not-for-profit group can hold a fundraiser. Specific details are available at their website: http://www.dangelos.com/corporate/community.html • Pizza Hut Pizza Hut offers a program where 20% of the proceeds of certain meals will be donated to your organization, similar to the program indicated above for Papa Gino's. Check with the manager of your local restaurant for details. • Domino's Domino's Pizza offers fundraising coupon books. • Grocery Chains - Many grocery stores offer coupon booklets that can be sold to raise funds.
