The contradictions about what is allowed on the LID is one of the most

frustrating things about it.

Dr. Ain treats some of the more difficult thyca cases, and has said that his

version of the LID works, so I'm inclined to follow his advice (without even

having to travel to Kentucky :-)

His advice is to do the LID for 2 weeks, and includes avoiding all dairy and

soy.

Dairy is one of the food categories highest in iodine, and it's very possible

that a single pat of butter can provide an entire day's allotment. I choose

to be as strict as I can, knowing that I'm

ingesting iodine incidentally. Iodine is in everything; the idea is to choose

foods that are as low as possible. There's about a mcg of iodine in the white

of an egg, more than 22 mcg in the yolk.

" Low iodine diet " is generally meant to be less than 50 mcg iodine a day, so you

can see why egg yolk isn't the best choice.

Soy isn't allowed because it blocks the uptake of iodine, which means it can

interfere with the RAI.

You can find Dr. Ain's recommendations at http://www.thyca.org/rai.htm#diet, and

lots of recipes in the LID cookbook at http://www.thyca.org/TCCookbook032003.pdf

You can also find lots of info and recipes in the archives ...

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Thyca/message/25713 .. LID suggestions and info

(including letters from the experts)

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Thyca/message/29097 .. LID recipe index

The hard part is getting started; I find once I'm actually doing the LID, it's

not that difficult or derivational.

good luck -
