Guest guest
OK...This is my understanding . If the disease is passed thru the MtDNA (Maternally) which would mean from the mother to the daughter to the son.. the son cannot pass it on. Only the daughters. Alice : Inheritance and mito I was just wondering if a mother passes mito on to her daughter and that mother passes it on to her son can the son pass it on to his kids?Is it always passed on thru the egg DNA in a mother or can a mother pass on a nuclear gene and if so would it be a recessive gene?I am curious because if my husbands grandmother and mother were sick and my husband could he pass it on to my kids? Thanks Medical advice, information, opinions, data and statements contained herein are not necessarily those of the list moderators. Guest guest
Genetics is very complicated. If the gene is recessive (there is more than one kind of recessive) then both parents have to carry the gene for it to be expressed and the parents wouldn't be symptomatic to any degree. Then there is X-linked, which is when the mother passes the gene to her sons who become symptomatic and the daughters can be carriers and pass it to their sons. Then is the mitochondrial DNA which can only be passed (except in extremely rare cases) down from a mother. Both sons and daughters can be symptomatic, but the sons won't pass it on. Since most of us don't know our genetic defect (if we did, our children could have their blood tested for the defect), we don't know what method of transmission we have. In our family we think it is mtDNA from the pattern, but since in our family few have been symptomatic (for sure) until adulthood, children have been born before anyone becomes symptomatic and a diagnosis is made. laurie > From: Mrsmurffy@... > Reply-To: > Date: Sat, 10 Jan 2004 08:28:47 EST > To: > Subject: : Inheritance and mito > > I was just wondering if a mother passes mito on to her daughter and that > mother passes it on to her son can the son pass it on to his kids? > Is it always passed on thru the egg DNA in a mother or can a mother pass on a > nuclear gene and if so would it be a recessive gene? > I am curious because if my husbands grandmother and mother were sick and my > husband could he pass it on to my kids? > Thanks > >
