Guest guest
If absorption is that low how did I get to stable temps on HC cream? And why can I not tell much (if any) difference whether I apply cream (as usual) or take it as a pill (occasionally). I've been trying hard to notice if I feel any difference between a pill and the cream, and so far I can't tell. Maybe I'm just weird? > 500g of hydrocortisone is used > per week, sufficient steroid may be absorbed through the skin to result in > adrenal gland suppression and/or eventually Cushing's syndrome. Since 500g of HC equals 500,000 mg I should just guess it would cause Cushing's. Since I seem to absorb the same or very close to the same mg from cream as from an equal dose in pill form, it would likely kill me. sol MsSquarepants wrote: > So, if this rate of absorption is accurate, I don't think HC cream could > work because you would need tons to mimic the oral dose. Guest guest
I don't know. That is why I wanted others opinions because I just started to substitute cream but now I am worried and think I should just go to the full HC orally to be sure. Guest guest
Cheri, How you found that info is a miracale...WOW. I think there are different strengths available in a cortisol cream. I might be wrong, but I could swear I had 5% cream--prescription. And I think they make suppositories in different strenths but my dr. said those are weaker than taking HC--maybe not if you apply them several times a day. Guest guest
Don';t ya think this is kind of contradictory? First they tell you that 1% is absorbed then they tell you you can give yourself Cushings from it? Sorry but topical creams are absorbed just as well as oral. Sometimes better which is why we are seeing more and more hormones dispenssed as topical creams and gels. -- Artistic Grooming- Hurricane WV http://www.stopthethyroidmadness.com/ http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/NaturalThyroidHormonesADRENALS/

But after discussing it with Val, I thought I'd try the cream for myself. Well to my surprise, I found that the cream actually works BETTER than the pill form for me!! I notice my temps go up within a half hour after using the cream, and I don't have to be concerned about stomach issues (I had a scope done in the summer showing erosion in my stomach from the HC pills). So I am now switching over to using 100% HC cream gradually. That is my experience. Dove Rose ---------- My Beloved is mine and I am His. His banner over me is love. I tried Cortaid because it contained the least amount of toxic additives but it doesn't seem to be doing it for me. Guest guest
Maybe I just need to use it longer. I will continue as it will take awhile for me to get the pills anyway. Guest guest
I loathe and despise Walmart, and hate to get anything there. But I have to say, their Equate brand of 1% HC cream is the one I like best so far, and it is the cheapest, too. Everything is a trade off. So I don't worry about the inactive ingredients, though I don't like them either. I would like even less to have bacteria contaminated HC cream. sol Dove Rose wrote: > I am just using a generic brand from Wal-Mart. It just says 1% hydrocortisone cream on the label. Guest guest
HI Dove, That is good news. When I last saw my last doctor, he wanted me to take the HC cream but refused to prescribe the HC in pill form. I guess he thought the pill form was not the same as the cream. He won't even treat me anymore. So, I have to self-medicate my thyroid and HC meds. Since the cream is the same,I think I will switch over to the OTC HC cream. What brand do you take? Guest guest
5mg of HC cream equals 5mg of HC. Using 1 percent HC cream that would be 1/8 of a tsp approx. or 1/2 gram. Guest guest
Well, they use high doses for autoimmune diseases so I guess it must be an anti-inflammatory. Guest guest
Thanks, Val. I still can't get over my EX doctor getting upset with me for asking him to prescribe HC in the pill form but precribed the cream w/o me even asking for it (I had a slight reddnes around my nose that he said the cream would help.) Thoughts? Skin absorption of topical steroids http://dermnetnz.org/treatments/topical-steroids.html Steroids are absorbed at different rates from different parts of the body. A steroid that works on the face may not work on the palm. But a potent steroid may cause side effects on the face. For example: a.. Forearm absorbs 1% b.. Armpit absorbs 4% c.. Face absorbs 7% d.. Eyelids and genitals absorb 30% e.. Palm absorbs 0.1% f.. Sole absorbs 0.05% Side effects of topical steroids Internal side effects If more than 50g of clobetasol propionate, or 500g of hydrocortisone is used per week, sufficient steroid may be absorbed through the skin to result in adrenal gland suppression and/or eventually Cushing's syndrome. a.. Adrenal Gland Suppression. Topical steroids can suppress the production of natural steroids, which are essential for healthy living. Stopping the steroids suddenly may then result in illness. b.. Cushing's Syndrome If large amounts of steroid are absorbed through the skin, fluid retention, raised blood pressure, diabetes etc. may result. Skin side effects Local side effects of topical steroids include: a.. Skin thinning (atrophy) and stretch marks (striae). b.. Easy bruising and tearing of the skin.
