Licorice Question

I read somewhere that licorice can only be taken for a specified amount of time

and then had to be discontinued, but I don't remember the details. Does anyone

know the proper regimen for taking licorice??

It is helping me tremendously...I am able to cut back significantly on HC since

taking licorice in the AM with a large glass of milk. My temps have even gone up

to 98.9 and I've had a great boost of energy!! I hope I don't have to stop it

for long.

Would appreciate any info. thanks!

Yes, I too am looking for a good brand of licorice to start taking?

And details about how long to take it?

Also, do you take it with redmonds sea salt too?

Or at a differnt time?

The best I know of is " Baschetti " . I order it from Jace Medical in California.

It is pure licorice root powder from Italy and comes in a tub. They recommend

mixing it with milk for a higher sodium content for more help with BP, but I

don't use cow's milk so I just boil some water and mix it in a glass jar (you

have to use boiling water so it will dilute and then I fill the rest of the

glass bottle with cold water. Just google " Jace Medical and Baschetti licorice "

I never knew natural stuff can have so many unhealthy side effects, so

what is a safe usage time period??

I wish we could invent a MIRACLE pill to help adrenals heel that would

work for everyone no matter what! Wouldnt that make life easier.

Yes, that's why I keep looking here - maybe someone will have a MIRACLE pill,or

a miracle I could use to help my son, my daughter, my sister, my two brothers, a

niece, a nephew and probably others I know who are suspect for cortisol

resistance that I know is genetic.

Well, the Commission E says their study lasted 7 years, LOL.

Dr. Duke and the Commission simply say to see a doctor if you take it

longer than a month. I think that is a CYA statement, just in case you

might have one of the contraindicating conditions and don't know it.

Dr. Duke gives licorice his safety rating of 2, which means it is no

more of a risk than a cup of coffee [provided you don't have the contra

indicator conditions].

Dr. Duke's ethnobotanical database will give you more info than you ever

wanted about every chemical contained in just about every herb.

Here is some of the info there for licorice root

http://www.ars-grin.gov/cgi-bin/duke/farmacy2.pl

Herbs are fascinating, but they do contain actual chemicals that have

biological action. Some of those chemicals can have serious interactions

with other herbs, as well as with Rx and OTC meds.

Here is a google search for interactions between herbs and drugs

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en & q=herb+drug+interactions & btnG=Google+Search

I used to have some excellent sites for checking herb interactions with

Rx meds but I lost them all in a software crash early this year. So

pointing to a google search is the best I can do.

To me it is part of taking responsibility for my own health to check

interactions myself. No matter who tells me something is safe. You can

also look up drugs online at drugs.com and similar sites.

>>I am wondering how long one should wait to have breakfast after taking

licorice?>>

The way it works best is to take it first thing in the morning with a large

glass of milk. The sodium in the milk is helpful to the licorice and it doesn't

dump into the system at once as the milk causes it to digest slower. I do that

as soon as I wake up with my HC, and then within a half hour I eat

breakfast...it makes a HUGE difference in my midmorning temps and energy. Hope

this helps :)

They are listed in the Commission E info, link sent earlier.

Dr. Duke says " Taking more than 50 grams of licorice root a day can

elevate blood pressure, lower potassium levels, and cause water

retention....Given these potential problems, you probably shouldn't take

the herb if you have hypertension, kidney problems, liver problems,

diabetes or heart problems. " The Green Pharmacy Herbal Handbook, p 198.

Since apparently the average daily dose is under 1 gram, 50 grams would

be an enormous dose.

Please tell me which brand you take? And - will it work just as well with kefir

or yogurt?

I use Nature's Answer Licorice extract (two dropperfuls). Yes, it works

perfectly well in kefir and yogurt...in fact, I put a half glass of Kefir and

half milk every day. The milk product helps it release more slowly (not a sudden

boost, but more evenly for hours), and the milk product provides sodium as well.
