Guest guest
Hi Lynn, I have been seeing doctors at Columbia Presbyterian for almost 10 years. Dr. DiMauro is the most well known of the docs there and is a wonderful person but he is primarily in research. There are many others who have trained under him and are pretty knowledgable. I see Dr. Hirano at the adult MDA clinic. MDA will pick up any costs that your insurance doesn't cover. The doc that did my fresh biopsy was Dr. Daras. If you do have a biopsy, go with the fresh one. Dr. Daras is very nice and it is a relatively easy procedure. They did the last biopsy in my left arm. Col. Pres. isn't perfect but they are the best in the area. They can tend to be a bit slow with results and I recommend calling if you don't hear anything after a month. They should have preliminary results by then. Dr. Hirano can be a bit cold sometimes but he is a good guy and also a researcher. Dr. Rowland is the former chief of neurology and is the kind of doc that leaves med students shaking in their boots. He seems nice when you talk to him more but I find myself very nervous around him. You might want to avoid him as your primary neuro. Also be prepared to have med students in the room during your evaluation. It is a teaching hospital. I think of it as doing my part in the education of new docs. They are usually very interested in learning and don't interfere in the discussion. The staff there is wonderful also. is the nurse who gets you checked in and also assists with the biopsy. He is great. They have a new director at the clinic that I haven't met yet. The office staff is pretty good at helping with whatever you need and its fairly easy to get an appointment. There number is (212)305-1319. There are also mito docs at Strong Hospital in Rochester but I prefer Col. Pres to them. Well this has gotten long. Let me know if you need more info. Where are you from?
Guest guest
Hi Everyone, I'm new to the group. I've been to many doctors and have had many tests and my current Neurologist suspects that I have a metabolic disorder, possibly GSD or a mitochondrial disorder. He wants me to have a muscle biopsy and is referring my to someone at New York Presbyterian Hospital (Columbia) in New York City. He has not provided a name as yet. I was wondering if anyone has a recommendation for a doctor at Columbia or has an opinion about the Neuro depatment at the hospital. Also, are there any other doctors in the NY area that specialize in mito disorders? I've seen the name Dr. Slomin mentioned. Thanks for your help.
