Guest guest
I am less than satisfied with Amber's progress with her expressive speech. We have been with our SLP since Amber was 18 months old (she is now 4.5) and I am just not convinced that she is properly trained in apraxia treatment. We started seeing a PT two months ago who has significant training in sensory integration disorders, and I swear that what she has me doing with Amber has provided more progress (she has me doing lots of oral exercises, vibrating chewy, chewy tubes, lots of gum chewing, lots of blowing (cottonballs, etc.)). These are things that our SLP doesn't consistently work on. In our SLP's defense, Amber can be " difficult " when she doesn't want to do something. I am in northeastern pennsylvania and the services around here are just terrible. There are very few speech clinic's around and none of them mention apraxia as their specialty (not to mention, due to limited SLP's, the waiting list can be 6 to 12 months). Amber's school therapist seems ok but I can't get more than two sessions a week (I am hoping that will change once I get Dr. Agin's report). So, I did a search on teh ASHA website for therapist located in Luzerne County and I only found one that lists apraxia as one of her specialties. Of course, does that mean that 5 years ago she treated a child with apraxia or is she really trained in it. I have a call into her (she is with a local university so I am not even sure if I would get her or one of her students) but I haven't heard back. Sometimes I really wish we lived in a big city because I know we would have more options. Do you know of any therapists in my area. It hit me the other day that Amber will be 5 on July 8th and we are still only getting 2 or 3 word sentences and a lot of her words are approximations. thanks for any thoughts or advice. tina and Amber
