One is after surgery, when the parathyroids (responsible for calcium metabolism) can go into shock, or in rarer cases, be lost. Calcium supplements are generally recommended for the first days or weeks after surgery, until the parathyroids regain their function. If they have been lost, then one must be vigilant forever to maintain proper serum calcium levels. The second concern is the connection between TSH suppression and bone loss. ..... from http://www.levoxyl.com/insert.htm .... " Effects on bone mineral density - In women, long-term levothyroxine sodium therapy has been associated with decreased bone mineral density, especially in postmenopausal women on greater than replacement doses or in women who are receiving suppressive doses of levothyroxine sodium. Therefore, it is recommended that patients receiving levothyroxine sodium be given the minimum dose necessary to achieve the desired clinical and biochemical response.
