Guest guest
I am 4 months post-op and have started to lose my hair also due to not enough protein intake. I don't like this a bit! I also don't like the protein shakes much, so I have come up with this: 32 ounces of fat-free milk (36g protein) 1 scoop vanilla protein drink (20g protein) 1 packet sugar free chocolate carnation instant breakfast (4g protein) Mix all in a 32 ounce cup. I sip on this all day and by the end of the day, I have 60g of protein and it actually tastes good because the protein powder is diluted a lot with the milk. This also gets in a lot of my calcium from the milk. My hair has stopped falling out and I have much more energy. Of course I get tired of having to drink these drinks, but I would rather do this than be bald! Pam K. > After almost 5 months post-op, my sister has started losing quite a bit > of her hair. Guest guest
Why can't she tolerate the protein drinks? Has she bought samples from Vitalady? Her drinks are better than those out in the stores. Is she taking biotin supplements? She can use Nioxin shampoo. Hope these things help. Guest guest
Hairloss after surgery is commonplace because of the reaction to the anesthesia and the " shock " of surgery. It usually starts around 4 months, and stops around 7 months. Protein will help. What protein shakes is she using, or has she tried? Pam Hairloss After almost 5 months post-op, my sister has started losing quite a bit of her hair. She tries very hard to get as much protein in as she can. However, she cannot tolerate the protein bars or the protein shakes. Does anyone have any suggestions of anything else that might help reduce the hairloss or begin it growing back again. Is this fairly normal? Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. To Subscribe to 's weekly FREE Newsletter send an email to GBCookbook-subscribe@... Guest guest
I was gonna let this go & I see the girls have responded, b ut I gotta put my ..02 in. I am 4 months post-op and have started to lose my hair also due to not enough protein intake. ******** 4 months is right on schedule. My personal theory is that we lose due to the anesthesia. When I was revised, I had PUHLENTY of protein on board, before & after surgery. I only lost 12# (which is all I had to lose), but I still lost hair, right at 4 months. Wasn't protein, wasn't rapid wt loss, had to be anesthesia. But if I had NOT been high on protein, how MUCH more hair would I have lost??? I don't like this a bit! I also don't like the protein shakes much, so I have come up with this: ********* You just haven't not met your match yet, that's all 32 ounces of fat-free milk (36g protein) ******* at 12g sugar per 8 oz, that's 48g of sugar. Can't remember the source.. milk protein? Mix all in a 32 ounce cup. This also gets in a lot of my calcium from the milk. ****** not really--you lost the enzyme for turning milk into much of anything by age 5, but no matter. If you are white, and had any left in there, it's locked up in the lower stomach, where the milk doesn't go--no key to unlock any nutritoinal value that MIGHT be in there My hair has stopped falling out and I have much more energy. You might try a protein that you can shake up in 4 oz of water. 30g protein, less than 6g sugar. Fast, fun & done. I don't count bars as protein, so that's why I'm not asking after those. Guest guest
Dear Sue, I am twenty three months post op and 49 years of age. I have some excess skin.. I recently had a plastic surgery consultation about the excess skin. He told me I had good skin turgor, meaning good elasticity in my skin, but that my skin had now shrunk all that it was going to shrink. I dont think lotions, etc will help the skin to shrink.. However, after wls, we tend to be dryer .. everywhere .. Wink .. wink.. if you know what I mean.. so lotions, etc are very much needed as well as supplementation of vitamin E in dry form.. We also need Vitamin A, D, Zinc, B12, calcium, multi. vites, Vit C, etc as we malabsorb the fat soluble vitamins. Take care.. and best of luck on your journey. Guest guest
I feel hopeful, because I had surgery 5 months ago and 5 years ago, never lost a hair. But now I can afford to either, because I lost a bunch 7 years ago to I don't know what. And I never got it back. Maybe if I loss this weight and toxins it will come back. HA HA. I was wondering. I am 50 and am wondering if I use lots of lotion while lossing will it help my skin draw up any. Or is it a lost cause. hopeful sue h Re: Re: Hairloss I was gonna let this go & I see the girls have responded, b ut I gotta put my ..02 in. Guest guest
it is normal to lose hair and the only thing I can think of is the Biotin and Nioxin but she really needs a good protein shake we simply cannot absorb enough thru food Hairloss > After almost 5 months post-op, my sister has started losing quite a bit > of her hair. Guest guest
(Here we go again, gang.) Pam - I'm not trying to beat up on you, but are you aware of all the sugar in that milk? Some people can handle it, but most can't. It will slow your weight loss or cause you to gain. Also, protein powders lose their worth after about 30 minutes. So, that scoop of protein powder that you add to your drink is basically doing you very little good. Have you tried chocolate protein powders from Vitalady? There are some that are really, really good, and you won't need milk or CIB to add to them. I'm glad your hair loss is improving, but I do feel there is a better way to get your protein in. Good luck. Jeanne in WI Age 39 Open RNY 05/21/2002 314/ 237/150-175 5' 8 " djgraves@...
Guest guest
I had no idea that milk had that much sugar. All I know is that my doctor told me to drink lot's of it and to even add powdered milk to it to up the protein. It was in our published book that was handed out to us by our gastric nutritionist at the hospital. I will ask him about it at my next visit just to get clarification. Now I don't know who/what to believe. I had my surgery July 29, 2002 and have lost 67 pounds so far. I am not at all upset at my weight loss, quite the contrary! And, I keep losing - I only have about 30 more to lose. So, the sugar doesn't seem to be slowing the weight loss. I tolerate eating sugar very well which is why the milk may work for me. All I know is that I should probably go by what my doctor says for now until it stops working. I would love to find a protein drink that tastes better and may look up the Vitalady's chocolate, etc. Blessings, Pam K. > (Here we go again, gang.) > > Pam - I'm not trying to beat up on you, but are you aware of all the sugar > in that milk? Guest guest
That's fine, Pam. There are still a lot of docs out there who push the milk, and many of us here disagree with that. It's quite a controversial topic. If you do find a good protein you like from Vitalady, you will be able to cut back on the milk, and you may find that your weight loss increases. Good luck finding that protein. Jeanne in WI Age 39 Open RNY 05/21/2002 314/ 237/150-175 5' 8 " djgraves@...
Guest guest
Sugar can work all the way down to goal. And then right back up past where you started. Getting sick isn't why we avoid it. It's the one food that can reverse our surgery, all by itself. Guest guest
Thanks for the nice response! I know this is a learning process and what works for one may not work for another but if I can drop weight more quickly by omitting the milk, then I may opt for that. Pam K.
