Guest guest
OK, , you have me duly confused with your statements here. WhileI can agree that a lack of stomach acid can make it more difficult to break down certain nutrients, particularly B-12, the digestiveprocess actually continues in the small intestine and most of one'snutrients are actually released into the walls of the intestine. The thing you say that absolutely does not make sense to me is thatif you have problems with GERD, you need more stomach acid, notless. This flies in the face of everything I have ever learned about GERD.Even when you use Nexium or another PPI, it does not totally shutdown the production of stomach acid, just decreases it. And stomach acid traveling in places it does not belong can do a great deal more damage than you may realize, including tooth damage, laryngealdamage, Barrett's Syndrome and even esophageal cancer. Since the only option other than taking PPIs for most GERD patientsis surgery, at this point still fairly major surgery, I for one will stick withthe medication. If B-12 deficiency is thought to be a problem, couldn'tthat be solved with B-12 supplements? And if absorption is lacking,B-12 shots are available, although I doubt that would be necessaryfor most people.Take care,TammyHiOne other thing you might consider is the Prevacid. Dr seems to think that hypothyroidism and lack of B-12 go hand in hand-and if you are having problems with GERD or acid reflux disease, you need MORE stomach acid, not less. You can increase that with vitamin B-12 and/or Betaine. Also, lack of stomach acid makes it much more difficult for your body to derive any nutrients from your food or supplements. Hope this helps -:)MyIdahoBeachbum wrote:My Ferritin level was 18, so I started iron. My doc told me ferriitin didnt matter anyway, but try it if I wanted to. Someone on a forum (I think) told me to take it with C becasue it works better. Arg. info overload and I still feel like sh**! at least I can laugh about it today... maybe Ill have another ferritin test next week to see if I need it anymore. When I feel like devoting a good couple of hours to the internet, Im going to read up on adrenals. Everyone keeps pointing me there, and I dont know anything except I asked for a test a while back, and the doc said it was ok. but, you know how taht goes... thanks! Re: What I take in one day: Am I killing myself slowly?Oh, I just noticed you take both Iron and Vit C - unless you have beendirected by your doctor to take both of those for a very specificreason STOP. Too much iron will give the same symptoms - and vit Cmakes the iron situation stronger - so if your doc said to do it for adisease then check with him first. IF you are only doing it becauseyou felt like trying it, or some one misguidedly said "try iron itwon't hurt "then discontinue it. Excess iron is dangerous. Your bodyhas no way to get rid of excess iron except through loss of blood.Sorry to be a party pooper. -Lynn > >> > Meds and supplements I take each day. Guest guest
One thing to ask your doctor about would be a 24 hour ph probe. It’s a tube that measures your acid reflux. I had one the one time my GERD just got out of control and found out my stomach was producing 60% more acid than it should be even though I was already on prevacid… Otherwise everyone would have been confused. -Ata From: The_Thyroid_Support_Group [mailto:The_Thyroid_Support_Group ] On Behalf Of Lair Sent: Friday, May 19, 2006 10:26 PM To: The_Thyroid_Support_Group Subject: Re: !Re: Re: What I take in one day: Am I killing myself slowly? Guest guest
Hi Tammy If you could eliminate the need for antacids and at the same time, improve your physical condition, wouldnt you consider it?
Guest guest
Hi Tammy, I agree with . Seems as if this is another area where traditional doctors just " don't get it. " I was on aciphex at $6 bucks a pill, which helped stop the GERD symptoms, but didn't help with absorption issues –just made them worse amongst other things. We have learned for whatever reasons to think that acid in our stomachs is the enemy - - not true! It (acid in our stomachs) IS the first line of defense we have against disease and the crucial way that we break down foods so we can absorb healthy nutrients. The test to see if you have low or high stomach is to swallow a tablespoon of vinegar when you get heartburn; if you get relief you have low stomach acid or if you get no relief or the burn intensifies you have high stomach acid. See: http://www.wholehealthclinic.com/dis/hypochlorhydria.htm Also, Sherry MD has written a number of books, like " No more heartburn " " Detox or Die " " You are what you eat " " Tired or Toxic " and more. She has been my life support. I too, thought I had an overload of stomach acid, but that wasn't true -just the opposite and I naively did as my doctor said and took the pill, which only multiplied problems with deficient stomach acid. Now I take a tablespoon of vinegar before meals or drink lemon water, as I couldn't remember to take Betaine for healthy stomach acid. Also, you should NOT drink any liquid with a meal, but most docs don't tell you that either -it dilutes the digestive gases. I also had Barrett's Syndrome, which can lead to esophageal cancer -but it has healed and is gone because of proper natural treatment. Now I absorb nutrients much better. BTW, my children's pediatrician warned me about the high incidence of stomach cancer among patients taking acid suppressors. This woke me up to my digestive problems as well as those of my son. Eventually we found out, just as Dr. states in his book that allergies can be the culprit . We are both allergic and cannot tolerate potatoes in any form. Perhaps that explains why $ynthroid and Levoxyl made me worse. Although I haven't taken the time to research the studies, I'll bet they prove that more incidences of stomach cancer occur in patients who take acid suppressors.
