Hello,

My name is Nora. I am 55 years old and I live in Michigan. I had my

first episode of AF in November 2003 that lasted about 2 hours. I am

an RN and even though I work in the Neonatal Nursery and know very

little about cardiology, I knew enough to know something was terribly

wrong. I remember seeing my life pass before me on the way to the

ER. At the time I had bronchitis and had just started on Allbuterol

(a bronchodialator) and my doctor thought that was what caused the

afib. They did a cardiac workup and found no structural problems

with my heart. I was already taking an aspirin a day so he told me

to continue that and they stopped one of my blood pressure medicines

and put me on Cardizem instead. I was already taking Toprol 200 mg.

I didn't have another episode until April of 2004. This episode

lasted about 6 hours. At that time they started Coumadin. I am

vegetarian so they have had some time regulating the Coumadin since I

eat a lot of foods high in Vitamin K. This has been a real learning

lesson for me.

Then I didn't have any more episodes until about two weeks ago and I

have had 3 episodes in the last two weeks. These last three episodes

coming so close together have left me feeling very tired and easily

depressed. They increased my daily cardizem to 240 mg and now I have

a lot of edema which makes me miserable. I understand Cardizem can

cause edema. They also had me take extra short acting cardizem

during an episode and that slowed my heart rate to 40. I usually get

light headed and short of breath when in afib but the low heart rate

made those symtoms even worse.

I am now trying to analyze all of these episodes. All but the first

happened when I was sleep deprived (I work nights). Two happened

right after I resumed taking estrogen after not taking it for 7

days. One happened when I had a GI virus and my potassium was on the

low end of normal (3.5). My doctor has recommended that I work the

day shift and get regular rest for a two month period to see if that

helps. Does anyone know anything about afib and night shift

workers? Or the relationships of low potassium or variations in

estrogen level and aftib? I read with interest the post about vagal

vs adrenergic causes of afib and would like more information about

this.

My doctor has now prescribed Digoxin and I am hesitant to take this.

I think that some of my symptoms (including the ones he is wanting to

treat with Digoxin) may be caused by the medications I am taking. Up

until this point I have been managed by my family practice physician

whom I adore and trust but I think it is time to see a cardiologist

and I will be following through on a referral to one who specializes

in arrhythmias. I am wondering if it wouldn't be best to put me back

on my original blood pressure meds (Toprol and Cozaar) plus Coumadin

and use Cardizem only when afib. Is anyone on this list on this

regimine?

Nora

PS I found this group by searching google for atrial fib.

Hi Nora, nice to meet you and welcome to the group. I read your history of

AFib and just wanted to mention that I also have had episodes triggered by

hormone imbalances. I am now working with my primary care physician and a

pharmacist who specializes in bio-identical hormones to try to solve my

imbalances

which have plagued me for years, right alongside all the afib.

I experienced edema and fatigue as side effects from Cardizem, which I took

for years. Now I am trying Tikosyn, and although I have had quite a few

breakthrough episodes, after 5 months it would appear that perhaps it is going

to

help. It's really nice to be off the Cardizem, that's for sure. Sandy, nsr

since Christmas Day 2004
