Guest guest
, I'm sure there are many resources out there, but the two sites we were given about ototoxic medications (those that can cause hearing loss) are: http://www.tchain.com/otoneurology/disorders/bilat/ototoxins.html and http://www.vestibular.org/ototox.html Kerry re genthro mycin Thank you , I am starting to get nervous now... my ENT asked me what meds he was on and I only thought of the ampicilin at birth as I had not read his birth report entirely as the ENT appt was the same day I got it. I wish I had known as I would have mentioned it to him then. Do you think this is at least in part the reason for Ricky's loss?? Should I bring it up to the audiologist on WEdnesday for his ABR? Thanks!
Guest guest
Some people are genetically predisposed to hearing loss if treated with aminoglycoside-type antibiotics like GENTAmycin. I think this is the one you mean -- I haven't heard of genthromycin before.) People with a mutation in the mitochondrial gene for 12S RNA are more susceptible. Geneticists can test for mutations in this gene. If a person tests positive and they have had high doses of this type of antibiotic before, it is probably the cause for the hearing loss.
