Guest guest
Jodie, I don't know anything about your insurence and I don't have any good ideas as to what to do. But, I will hope that you will keep up the fight. If they covered it with the man you worked with then they do cover it someway some how. If you can go the route of Aetna perhaps they will be more helpful. I really can't say. I pray for you and I hope you will keep us posted. Warm thoughts and well wishes. > >>Hi all. Guest guest
Patti is still having trouble with coughing and drainage due to her new tooth. Now she is pretty much refusing to take her bottle. I can get her to take 2-3 oz at a time if I have rubbed orajel on her gums first. She doesn't mind eating table foods at all, but being 9 months old, she doesn't get enough calories that way. I have with held the table food from her and she is still not taking her bottle. I know she would eat ice cream (It is so hot here she will eat any thing frozen) and blue bell has 190 calories in a half cup in their french vanilla. She is currently taking ADEKs so do you think she would go vitamin defficient if I started feeding her ice cream after her bottle? Do you think the dietician would flip? She all ready isn't to keen on the idea that Patti won't eat jared baby foods. She eats either mashed or very , very tiny pieces of what we have. I have a call in to her, but she probably won't get back to me until this afternoon or later. I just feel at my wits end as I just weighed her and she has lost 0.3 pounds since Friday. I do have to say that after she has taken a bottle her coughing is worse and sounds more wet and cruddy. She doesn't have that problem after eating food. Do you think this is a temporary thing due to so much drainage and I shouldn't worry about it and shove in the table foods, or what? Sorry this is so rambling, and maybe not very clear. I'll be happy to answer any questions about what meds she is on etc. Dawn mom of 4, 5 and under, the youngest wcf
Guest guest
Hi Dawn, We have recently gone through the same thing with our daughter Emma. The most important thing is calories. Our dietician was great in that regard since she has a great understanding of children and their eating habits. She has the theory that the less you force food, and worry about it, the less it will be an issue. If all your daughter will eat is ice cream, go for it!! But if she wants table food, I would give it to her. There are ways to add fat/clories to meals. We use a lot of butter, heavy cream and corn oil. Emma doesn't even notice a difference. (It keeps me from eating from her plate however...LOL) You could also try avacado, it's high in calories. In conjunction to Emma's feedings she is also on 16 oz. of Pediasure daily. This is an easy way for her to boost her caloric intake. She also loves sweet potatoes with butter and maple syrup and we also have a soft cheese with fruit (called Minigo in Canada) that we feed her. It's got 8 grams of fat in a 100g container!! And the old reliable Macaroni and Cheese, I just add extra cheese and butter. Good luck with everything, I know how stressing it can be! Guest guest
Thanks for all of your replies guys. I feel better now. :-) After I got of off the computer I decided to try to make ice cream with her formula. I added a small amount of sugar and vanilla to it and am freezing some. I let her have some of the mix from an eye dropper before I froze it and as she liked it I put several oz of it into a bottle that has a converter lid with a tube staw. She drank 3 oz really well after she ate a cracker. So we may be doctoring formula and feeding it from a straw. Oh well, anything for the calories. Guest guest
She does act like she is weaning herself. My hubby has remarked over and over that she acted this way when she decided not to breast feed anymore at 5 months old. I was upset and she was ready to move on. :-) I suppose she may be ready for no more bottles. I am going to let her have the baby cup and straw today and see if she will take a bottle at bed time. If she won't then I guess I know my answer. Guest guest
Dawn, My daughter Emma is 13 months old and totally refused all jar baby foods for a while. This caused us great anxiety since we needed her to eat the applesauce at least. Eventually, she refused both the bottle and all jar foods but she would pick at some finger foods. Her problems started around seven months of age and I never really attributed any of it to teething. It took a while but eventually she was diagnosed by testing with what they refer to as silent acid reflux.. The only symptom being her lack of eating. Initially she had no vomiting (not until way after being diagnosed with acid reflux), no episodes of discomfort or crying at night or when placed laying down, no sour faces, etc. She had absolutely none of the traditional signs of acid reflux, she just eat or drank in very small quantities eventually stopping both altogether. She was initially placed on zantac which didn't help at all and she's now on prilosec and reglan with a feeding tube for night feeds and has gained a pound and a half in three weeks. The feeding team at her hospital (CHOP) gave us some simple quidelines to help get her to eat jar foods. Their suggestions along with the change in meds, has made a world of difference for us. First, we have always been told do not force feed. The other basic recommendations we were given are as follows: 1. Maintain a positive mealtime. Reward acceptance of food and do not attend to behaviors that interfere with acceptance (not sure what the second part of this statement means exactly). Reward acceptance with books/verbal praise/songs/toys. 2. Hold the utensil right at her lip (basically touching it) and do not back off if she begins to cry. Hold the spoon for 10 seconds at her mouth. If she refuses to eat the food during that time, remove the spoon, wait 30 seconds and then try again. ***This advise has done wonders for us. I attribute this in large part to her now eating jar foods. 3. End all meals by saying " one last bite " and then end the meal with an acceptance. Do not end the meal because the child is upset or crying. If the meal is ended when they are upset, they will learn to cry to get out of eating. We were basically always doing step one but step two and three, we were not doing in this exact manner. Holding the utensil up to her lip did not work real well at first but I found she would eventually reluctantly take it. She now readily opens her mouth and eats food off her spoon. She does fuss and cry some but her mouth is open and she is not spitting it back out at me. We were also told that she is not at an age where she can get enough calories by feeding herself so getting her to eat from a spoon was essential to maintain her calorie intake. She still doesn't take any large quantity of jar foods but we put a tablespoon of butter in all the vegis and meats which adds a hundred calories at a pop so that really helps. We were also told this week by her nutritionist that we could substitute yo baby yogurt for a bottle since she still refuses all milk (pediasure, whole, strawberry, banana, etc). Yo baby is made from 100% whole milk while virtually all of the other baby yogurts are made from skim milk (I know of no others made from whole milk). She wouldn't touch this two weeks ago but she eat it up today. I would definately let her eat what she wants to eat but I would not stop trying the jar foods. I think ice cream is good both nutritionally (except for all the sugar) since it's made from milk and it's high in calories. If the problem persists for a while, I would look into the possibility of acid reflux. Teeth may bother kids here or there but I don't think it affects them for months on end. I hope this helps. Good luck. - mom to Isabelle 2 (almost 3) years wo/cf and Emma 13 months w/cf ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! Guest guest
Dawn, Have you tried putting her formula in a sippy cup? Maybe she just doesn't like the bottle. My middle child which doesn't have CF hated her bottle at 9 months but loved to use a sippy cup. Just a thought. Guest guest
We have gone to almost no formula in a bottle, only if she is sleepy will she take it. I have actually used the smoothy sugestion, only we are making our own. half cup of hagen daz 270 cals, quarter cup formula 54 cals, and quarter cup flavored yogurt 85 cals. We blended it and put it in her bottle that has an adapter lid with a straw. She can't handle a sippy cup, but she can do a straw, go figgure. Any way, the 8 oz smoothie has a total of 409 cals and she loves it. So I've given up worrying. On to something else I guess. You know how it is.
