Hello to everyone.

Has anyone read the book “Getting Verbal with Childhood Apraxia” by Pam

Marshal? I have just finished the book and found it very helpful … I

highly recommend the book particularly for those parents of kids who are

non-vocal and minimally verbal. It provides very good practical advise

for interacting with our children. I feel this book has made a huge

difference in ’ progress (simply by changing the way I have

encouraged and responded to his attempts at sounds).

Anyways, just thought I would pass on this info! I hope all is well.

Liz - can you tell us a bit more about this book? Does it have specific

exercises and activities?

Thanks,

I read this book also. I highly recommend it IF your child is

preverbal. I don't think it would be very helpful if your child is

already verbal. Basically, I feel the book is helpful in getting your

child to make sounds and imitate.

I read the book yesterday at my SLP's office. Quick easy reading but

one thing it talks about is the stages babies go through. One item

was turn taking. Many of us will talk to our kids but don't wait for

an answer and so they tend not to respond at all. Often b/c they

can't.

It also mentioned something about crowd noise which I found

interesting. The example was that kids learn by imitating so the

author had a group of pre-schoolers from non verbbal to verbal. She

started playing with a baby doll and said " My baby is hungry " the

more verbal ones chimed in quickly and as the interactions continued

the non verbal ones would eventually respond with maybe some sounds.

It is important to respond to all sounds and actions and treat

exchanges like conversations.

My son is past many of the suggestions but for a non verbal child or

one just starting to vocalize I thought it was a good book to show

parents how to stimulate and interact with their child.
