Can you tell me what the procedure was like? How did they sedate you? How long did the procedure last? Thanks for the info. Some have heard more than others, depending on the location, but the pain was managible with Advil and was gone in a few days. I was able to go out to eat after each one and walk with a limp after the dour that were done on my legs. Guest guest Posted March 5, 2004 Report Share Posted March 5, 2004 Lynn The one in my arm was a snap. My incision was about 2 inches long. I have a nasty scar, but that was the result of a medical student doing the stitching. Your incision might be longer. They had to get through the fat on my arm. They just did it sitting in a chair, like in the dentist with local anesthesia. I had spinals for two on my legs, had a local on another in my leg and one with general anesthesia. The biggest thing with a muscle biopsy is that the doctor orders the right tests and they get enough muscle tissue. I had to go to Atlanta, from Michigan for a fresh biopsy and the correct testing before I got a diagnosis. If you have one of the mito conditions with ragged red fibers, then they do it on frozen tissue. It is important that the biopsy is done in a leg or arm, as we have two kinds of muscle - fast twitch and slow twitch and it needs to be on one rather than the other (can't remember for sure, but I think that limb muscle is the fast twitch variety). I watched my arm biopsy, since I was sitting up. They just make an incision and take a piece of muscle and sew you back up. Of course this is after you are given anesthesia. If it is a needle biopsy, then there is no incision. They are unable to get enough tissue from a needle biopsy to do the respiratory chain testing.
