The SLP who evaluated and diagnosed my son with Oral Apraxia provided

me with a Therapy plan for Apraxic Toddlers that she created.

The 1st phase of the therapy seems to be ALL tongue movement, bring

tongue tip in and out of mouth and up and down, lick lips, pick up

cheerios with the tip of the tongue, lift top lip (both sides) with

tongue, poke out cheek with the tongue, oppose clinician force with

tongue, semi circle of molars, place tongue between inner molars,

circle cheek with tongue, and on and on, so many different types of

tongue exercises before speech development.

She also emphasizes learning to fluctuate and move sound from front

to back with the tongue. (PA-front sound …TA-mid sound…KA-back

sound). I most say that I and impressed with her zest, the way she

handles my son (an he seems to like her), her enthusiasm and

experience with Apraxic children. However, this is the plan SHE

uses in her private practice though she gave me a copy to share with

the SLP assigned to Kellen from EI. Can I request a therapy plan

from the SLP? I want to know what she proposes to do for my baby.

Also, here are some of the outcomes for over the next 6 months for

Kellen:

1. Circle his lips with his tongue

2. Create tip, lift up, hold out, circle lips with his tongue

3. Respond yes or no to correctly to questions

4. Use 3 word phrases

5. Converse without repeating (echolalia)

Can this/does this happen in 6 months?

LASTLY, Kellen doesn't seem interested in Signing Times. He will

dance to the music here and there and then beg to watch Barney or Hi-

What should I do?

Thanks,

Audra, mom to 2-year old Kellen w/Oral Apraxia
