Guest guest
<< Anyone see Newsnight last night? They were talking to teachers and saying there is a huge problem in keeping teachers in London. (I think Nick is in a similar position, is that right, Nick?) >> My sisters partner is a teacher and they live in London... though he does still have to commute a 40 minute journey, as prices are so high they could not get a flat near the school. Problem I see with recruting new teachers, is that young teachers can't afford to buy or even rent accomodation in London. Nick.
Guest guest
> << Anyone see Newsnight last night? They were talking to teachers and saying > there is a huge problem in keeping teachers in London. ...........my brother and his wife (both teachers) have recently left London. They sold their small (average lounge, small kitchen, 1 double, 1 single bedroom and small bathroom) 2 bed flat in Hounslow for £114,000, having bought it for approx £70k 4-5 years earlier. They now live in a 3 bed semi with gardens etc in Yeovil, which they paid £95,000 for. When they were in London, they both had to work and DD1 went to a childminder. Now his wife is a SAHM (OK he got a dep head's job which obviously increased his income, but even so) I think their quality of life has increased somewhat, don't you!!! Aileen Sort of SAHM to Mark 4 and 2 (Sort of means I stay at home during the day and only go out to work once DH is home to look after the kids!!!) Dohhh! Sonjia> Same here too - we sold our 4 bed, nextdoor to a pub, opposite a garage, on very busy road , miniscule 'garden', victorian terrace in Aldershot, Hants and bought our 3 bed semi, large gardens, edge of village surrounded by fields house in North Cambs for half the price! We were totally priced out of Hampshire in the last couple of years - if we'd moved down there we might have got a studio flat for what we could afford, Oh and we halved our mortgage in the process too - only downside is all my family and friends are now 2 1/2 hours away ( Hannah, 27 Mum to Bethany 6 1/2, Lawrence 5, Verity 2 1/2 and Baby due Feb 2001 See our family photos at :- http://albums.photopoint.com/j/AlbumList?u=58003

Guest guest
Hi everyone, I've been follwing the discussion on house prices with interest (yes, I do actually read all messages, just never have time to write them!!) What concerns me, is that if one day DH and I decide to move back to England, we're going to lose out *so* badly financially! Houses over here (france) really are dirt cheap compared to the UK. We have a three bedroomed semi in a quiet area, but near the town centre which cost £40,000. What will we ever be able to find for that money in my home town of Bournemouth?! Just as well a move isn't planned for the near future! Sue V. SAHM- 6.5 mths
Guest guest
Well, I was quite happy to leave the relative cheapness of rural Worcestershire and come to within striking distance of the metropolis - it INCREASED my quality of life no end!
