Some hospitals require 6 weeks' notice in order to reserve an isolation room, so scan date is known precisely ahead of time. For the rest of us, it's guess work. If you have your records from last year, you'll have an idea of how long it took your TSH to get how high, which will give you some indication about how quickly your TSH rises. (And if you don't have your records from last year, do be sure to get them, along with all your other medical records.) I would start preparing for the LID now (shopping, cooking, freezing ...), but I think your endo's right that you probably won't be ready to scan much before July. If you're all ready to begin the LID when you have your blood tested on June 11, that should give you enough time to do the diet. You may be on it for a little bit longer than 2 weeks, depending on your TSH, hospital scheduling, etc., but if you plan it right, you won't mind. Too much. > 2. Are there other substances besides iodine that could interfere > with scan? ... What about other medications? Anything containing iodine. Read the LID at the ThyCa web site ( http://www.thyca.org/rai.htm#diet ) to familiarize yourself with what's not allowed. Certain meds (mostly red ones that might contain red dye #3, but also lactose ) ..... Betadine (topical) ... toothpaste with kelp, agar, or carageenan (even though you're not likely to swallow much) .... skin creams or bath salts are worth looking into. I have no doubt that some would say I'm going overboard, but I'd always rather be safe than sorry. Check your meds in a PDR (ask your pharmacist) - it's surprising what you'll find. Two prescription meds I'm aware of that contain lactose are Xanax and Synthroid. Yep, Synthroid. I've never heard anyone discuss how that affects the LID when one is using Thyrogen (and so continuing to take their T4), but it's worth looking into some day. There are some sources of hidden iodine at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Thyca/message/28112 > I really hope doing the LID helps me to not balloon up weight > wise like I did last summer! If you stick with lots of fresh foods (fruits, veggies, meats), you'll probably do fine. And if you gain a few pounds, remember that it's probably mostly edema, and the extra weight should come off once your TSH is back to where it should be. Good luck - NYC PS - In addition to the ThyCa LID cookbook, you may also want to browse through some letters from the archives .... http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Thyca/message/25713 ..
