How long have you been lo carbing? I started having hot flashes 2 months before

my 51st birthday and hated them. Never had them as bad as you though.

2 months after I started Atkins I noticed the hot flashes were less frequent and

less intense than before. Before I was on Atkins I had noticed that if I ate

sweets the hot flashes were worse. So when I stayed on induction I was not

surprised that keeping carbs low resulted in very minor to no hot flashes. And

because of this I will stay with lo carbing. When I have to many carbs (like

even 40 or 50) I'll have more hot flashes so I keep my carbs lo--under 20 for

now. I don't know where I'll keep them once I'm on maintenance.

I also take something called EstrAval which is a combination of dried soy

extract, dried dong quai extract, and dried black cohosh extract. Those herbs

can also be purchased separately.

Connie,

I use a product called " Hot Flash. " It is sold at my health food store and

is produced by Source Naturals. It contains Genistein-Rich Soy Concentrate,

Black Cohosh Root Extract, Dong Quai Root Extract, Licorice Root Extract, and

Vitex Berry Extract. I still get some hot flashes, but they are usually so

mild I hardly notice them. I also still wake up at night being hot, but not

on fire! Whenever I have run out of these and have gone 2-3 days without

them, the hot flashes come back very strong, so I know they reduce the

intensity tremendously. Of the many herbal remedies I have tried, this one

works best for me. As for sleeping through the night, I take a sleeping aid

that I buy at Walmart. I usually wake up only once during the night which is

so much better than practically never getting any sleep like before. I am

NOT a doctor... this is just what I have found that works for me.

Annie,

Is Estrotest something you get with a prescription, or something from the health food store? I need to try something different, and find a new doctor, too. I just moved to KY last September and went to this dr because some women I work with recommended her. However, I told her that I didn't want to take premarin because I had taken it before and it made me gain weight. She laughed, handed me a prescription for it, and walked out.

Lynn,

Thanks a million for the info. I am going to quit taking the premarin (again), and try some other things -- maybe the Hot Flash, if I can find it.

Incidentally, I was in a store today and bought Dr. Atkins "Age Defying Diet" book and in it he has a section on menopause. He says in speaking of HRT, "Whenever I wear my other hat, that of a weight-control guru with a diet able to provide weight loss in more than 99 percent of those who follow it, I note the true magnitude of the HRT problem. It Inhibits weight loss, even to the point of turning my weight-loss diet into a weight-gaining experience. In case you're wondering how often that happens, I can report that I've seen it among my patients more than 3,000 times."

Anyway, I am so happy that I bought this book -- I was beginning to think I was really weird or something. And, I have been taking the premarin on and off -- mostly on, since November and have also been low carbing most of that time and haven't had much success. He also lists some vitamins and minerals that help, so I will trying them also.

Thanks again for your assistance -- and to everyone else that responded to my questions.
