I mentioned thyroid problems in my family in another post, but

interestingly, they are all hyperthyroid, not hypo. Does anyone know

if both kinds can be autoimmune?

I have autoimmune hypothyrodism, but I'm not sure about hyper.

Both kinds can be- as Laurie said, autoimmune hypothyroidism is called Hashimoto's disease/thyroiditis. Then autoimmune hyperthyroidism is called Grave's disease. A good and informative website (though a bit technical) on these disorders and other autoimmune like thyroid disorders is:
