Sorry for the intrusion.I read your concerns and I have felt the

exact things. Sadie has bilateral plantaris. She is 8mo. Her left

foot is worse and therefore about a shoe size smaller. They were not

able to get rid of the crease in Sadies foot either which concerned

me greatly but its been about 8 weeks (since her plantaris casts) and

she has not relapsed. They may be a bit better. We stetch her feet

frequently. We were told to keep her in her bar 20hours and 10degrees

by one doctor and Ponseti told us 16hours and 10 degrees would

probably be ok. We settled on 16 in the bar, 4 hours in tennis shoes

and 4 hours in barefeet. The truth is everyone is making educated

guesses. This is working for Sadie. We took out the insert within 2

weeks of her orginal shoes. We discussed this with her docteor and he

felt it was not harmful and may stretch her forefoot, again an

educated guess.

If I remember right, Trent has bilateral clubfoot? It is normal for a foot

with plantaris to be significantly shorter than the other. Even after Kai had

full correction, there was a difference (he is only unilateral, tho, and it is

100% normal for a cf to be shorter than a non-cf). Before I took him to Dr

Ponseti, there was close to 2 shoe sizes difference, and now it is more like 1

shoe size, maybe less, difference. Because clubfoot in general and plantaris

specifically involve a defect at the arch of the foot, that will always be the

case with his feet.

Like said, working with the shoes is an educated guess when dealing

with plantaris. Because Kai was standing and cruising when he got out of the

plantaris casts, the original suggestion was 16 hours in the shoes. We have had

to reduce that to about 10-12 hours with him in tennis shoes for 6 hours a day

and barefoot the rest of the time.

With Kai's first shoes, I had to remove the insert, but I fashioned a new one

with moleskin because the 000 was so much too big for the foot it was silly!

There really is no harm in taking it out. It helps form the heel in a normal

cf, but in a plantaris clubfoot, the heel is usually well defined already for

some reason. Right now, we do have the inserts in the shoes and it is ok. At

first Kai got red marks, but his foot got used to it quickly and the marks went

away.

the foot with plantaris shorter? If so how much? Trent had 6 weeks of casting

and went back to braces friday. His right foot is a litter over a shoe size

just put " Angel " in subject to catch her eye Glad to hear both Sadie and Kia

are doing okay with the plantaris.

Yes Trent is bilateral CF with R plantaris.

So Dr Ponseti recomends after the plantaris casts to have the plantaris foot

only at a 10 degree correction? and 16 hrs?? Trent's is at 55 degrees and 24

hrs. I thought Ponseti recomends 50-60 degree in the plantaris foot, did this

change to 10? I don't think the plantaris is relapsing yet (hopefully never) ,

if it does maybe we will have to go to 10 degrees. And I have not done any

stretching, how could I have forgot!? The red spots don't seem to be bad yet I

will watch them and if they start to breakdown, I'll remove the inserts. At

least his foot is not slipping in the shoe.

Just a quick note, Kai's shoe is set at 55 degrees and he has tollerated it

well and no adverse effect to his foot. Like everything else, it seems to vary

from case to case.

hi Becky, The 10 degrees was sugested by her doc. in Seattle. I was

nervous about it so I asked Ponseti his opinion. He said it would be

ok. I honestly have not put Sadie's feet at 10 degrees. I settled on

about 45. 10 degrees seemed so drastic. Sadie has a crease on the

outside of her foot L>R and Dr. Mosca hoped that pulling the feet in

may correct the crease. I was afraid her whole foot may turn in. We

are all guessing. The stretching seems to have done more good than

anything. It is all very confusing. no one has the answers yet. I

just keep picking everyones brain. Angel has been a huge help. She

has spoken to so many people. She is also a few months ahead of us in

this process.
