Epinephrine given during dental procedures causes severe tachcardia and I

believe, puts me into atrial fib. Aspirin can cause more bleeding and bruising

than normal. I would avoid both.

Here

My suggestions

Ask for the non Epinepherine (adrenalin) freezing. The Dentist needs

to know if you are taking anticoagulents (Coumadin ) because the

extraction (if you really need to do that)could be a significant

bleeding risk .You may need to get your doctor to approve some

temporary change in your anticoagulent regieme.

If you are not taking anti-coagulents then the ony issue is the

possiblity triggering AF

Be very carefull of your diet. Try to get some Omega 3 (essential

fats )Fish Oil. Avoid any possible trigger and consume a mostly

vegetable diet in the days leading up to the appointment. Avoid any

processed food and especially Aspertame .

Meditate to remain very calm (if possible )Try some mint tea .

persistent AF.

I am on warafrin/sotalol ...many years. Had tooth exctrated in overseas dentist

I was advised to stop warfarin 3 days before..which I did.

Absolutely no problems...no real bleeding, no af,

Try to relax and let the Dent do his/her work

should avoid as far as the drugs and stuff if they need to pull a

tooth. I am just so nervous!

Thanks!

Carbocaine ... as list members kindly told me ... it's nicer too because it

doesn't last as long so I didn't end up having to go to work numb up to my

eyeball. It wears off faster. :)

I'd switch dentists. And I'd not risk a-fib with novocaine. My procedure

was also long a couple weeks ago, and my dentist (who I've had for 25 years)

said sometimes they have to give more Carbocaine because it's true that it

doesn't last as long. But I'm shocked a dentist would talk you into novocaine.

I'd

rather have extra shots of Carbocaine (which you don't feel since you're

still numb) than give a-fib a chance. Just my view. Don't mean to sound

critical.

*******

I recently broke a tooth, and had to go in to my dentist to have it

rebuilt and eventually preparation for a crown. They know about my

afib. I asked about alternatives to novacaine and was told that they

had them, but they didn't work as well or as long as novacaine. I

opted for the novacaine. Didn't have any problem with it, it didn't

put me into afib, nor did the two hour procedure for the crown prep.

Hope this helps.

Sorry , I was so elated to know there were alternatives that I

didn't get the names although I did mention our site and that someone

had mentioned using a non-epinephrine anesthesia like carbocaine(sp)

When he does the procedure I will ask for the names so that I can

pass them along. Normally my own dentist has been using Novocaine

and it probably did trigger AFIB in the past but I wasn't aware there

were alternatives but this time I will be off coumadin so that is a

entirely different story. My coumadin can be resumed the night of

the extractions.

Thought it was interesting that he would be willing to do an

extraction of one tooth and not stop coumadin if the pt level was 2.5

or lower, maybe we don't need to be off it as often as they take us

off. My level was 2.7 and several must be extracted.

suggested my Oral Surgeon check with my EP but I have already

done that and EP wanted a 3 day max off the coumadin and check in

when I stop coumadin, so he will be happy it's only 2 days. When it

is time to resume, the coumadin clinic will advise me what dose to

begin with and keep track of my PT. This AFIB and coumadin certainly

complicate and impact everything we do, doesn't it? Think I have

everything covered at this point unless we have a big snowstorm on

Thursday and can't get there after being off coumadin for 2 days, oh

well, don't even want to think about that possibility.
