Hi Gang,

I have no speech, but I carry a pre-paid mobile phone (cell phone?) that i

use to send short text messages to friends - for instance sends me

text " I am in area, r u home for visit? " and I text back " Great, come on

over " . If ever I was in difficulty, I know I could contact help. I take it

everywhere with me - when my credit runs down, I just deposit more money to

buy more credit. It is a great comfort to me, and is not expensive. You

must have mobile phones that you can send text messages on, they are common

here in Oz, but no one has mentioned them on PLS-FRIENDS, and I wonder why.

Can someone enlighten me.

Confused

Hi Janet,

Along with email, SMS provides me with my lifeline to the world and I

use it endlessly. My wife and both daughters have mobile (cell) phones,

as do most of my friends and work colleagues. Given my lack of speech

and greatly impaired mobility I don't think I'd be game to drive

anywhere by myself without the ability to message someone in the event

of a problem.

In fact with the latest phones it is possible to send emails to people

who don't have mobile phones and SMS and they can send SMS messages to

you from the internet if they know the right site to do it through. I

am regularly on after hours support for work and if I am not home to log

on and contact our operators (who don't have a company mobile phone) via

computer I can email them from my mobile phone and they can SMS me via

the internet.

All I can say is thank God/Allah/Buddha/Fred or whoever for

technology!! It allows me to go to work and function almost 100%

independently despite significant disabilities.
