Guest guest
What a incredibly wonderful update Sheila! Isn't it the best feeling in the world to hear this type of news?! It would be great to hear from more parents of children with severe apraxia or a similar severe multifaceted impairment of speech who began their children in kindergarten at 6 vs. 5 years old. I'm right with you on giving Tanner that extra year -and it's paid off well for us too. I'm thrilled we didn't start him at 5! I have a funny update about my son Tanner who is (still) a straight A student just wrapping up first grade pretty soon now. We are all playing hooky tomorrow to go to Orlando for the day to meet up with Tricia Morin and her family to try out some ride therapy since her family is vacationing here in Florida this week. (Tricia who went on all of our children's behalf to meet with the Senators just recently and whose son was written up in a poem by the President of the Missouri Speech Hearing Language Association http://www.cherab.org/information/silentnomore.html ) Tanner's school SLP came up to me after school today to tell me that Tanner came up to her and said " Do I have speech tomorrow? " and when she said " Yes " He said " I ...want to tell you... I won't be here ...be..cause I'm going to Or..lando... to see my friends " His SLP (Kim you know her well!) said it was such a sweet and considerate thing for him to do as a 7 year old -most would not think to let her know. Very cool Tanner! I know in quotes Tanner's speech sounds perfect -which is the good news. In real life however his speech impairment is a bit more obvious because each sentence takes a bit longer to get out, which is why I put the " ... " in so you can get an idea how he pauses to break up his sentence when he is doing a longer thought. I'm really confident however that in time Tanner will overcome this aspect to his apraxia as well -he's overcome the rest! Tricia will get to hear Tanner pre and post ride therapy tomorrow -so I'm sure she can let all you guys know! (and maybe update here) http://www.cherab.org/information/familiesrelate/letter.html Sheila please keep us updated as to how your child continues to soar. We all love to hear great news like this! Thanks for sharing! =====
Guest guest
yea sheila!!! its nice to hear good news about kindergarden. My son is 4 and we'll be thinking about kindergarden soon. she went up in her scores, yipee!!!! chris sillybear65 <sillybear65@...> wrote: I held my daughter out of school for an extra year therefore, she didn't begin Kindergarten until she was 6. She has severe apraxia and I thought it best to give her another year to improve verbally. Prior to attending kindergarten she was tested to see where she was academically. At that time she scored 0 on math, and kindergarten level 4 months along in reading. I opted to send her to the all day, every day kindergarten program because this way she would get ST 3 times per week and she could interact with other kids with speech difficulties more often. This has been a great year and I love her teacher, but this school year is almost over. Today we had another IEP meeting and we reviewed new testing results. She has improved drastically enough that even the principal raised his eyebrows and said, " That's really good. " Her results were Math- kindergarten level 5 months and reading is kindergarten level 9 months. I think that this is incredible for a child with this severe of a case of apraxia to come this far!! I am soooo proud of her!!!! Her ST at school also commented on how well she is talking now. She is still not speaking beyone 3-5 word sentences but, if she sees visual ques she will follow along and read a perfect sentences. The ST did say that she is beginning to come up with some good sentences on her own. Next year she will be in a normal 1st grade with the resource room there if she needs it. This year she didn't need extra help too much, but it is there for her to use next year if she needs it. I just feel soo good about her performance that I had to share it with everyone. Thanks for listening, Sheila
Guest guest
Thanks you for sharing this. I am presently 'battling' in my school district over my desire to hold my son back from K next year (he will be 5 in a week). This morning our school psychologist told me that ours is the " most complicated " exit from early ed she has ever worked on. In my mind, I was thinking, " Yeah! that's because it is actually individualized - and not the cookie cutter recommendations that are easy to make! " All 's current teachers and therapists are on my side. The school district higher ups...well, that's another story! Our city is not that large, so we don't have a lot of options, and our district doesn't have a transitional K for kids who are not yet ready. So....we're blazing a new trail. It's exhausting. I wish I could just follow the path that someone had created a ahead of me. Maybe the route I'm taking will help someone who will follow. Guest guest
Sheila That is so wonderful, not to mention inspiring for me. My daughter was recently diagnoised w/ apraxia & although she is very young, 2.2 yrs. old, i think about her & being about to go to kindergarten. Your daughter shows me anything is possible. Thanks for sharing your great news...keep it coming. > I held my daughter out of school for an extra year therefore, she > didn't begin Kindergarten until she was 6. Guest guest
There are several of us that have had good school experiences so far. My 7 year old daughter had/has severe apraxia. She's done well in kindegarten and 1st grade. I think school has helped her speech. Good luck! > > I held my daughter out of school for an extra year therefore, she > > didn't begin Kindergarten until she was 6.
