Guest guest
Ata, Hormone balance and thyroid health all go hand in hand. When one is out of balance, you can count on your other hormones being out of balance. Balancing the hormones with natural alternatives is what I educate women about. Right now I have over 2000 women that I am working with in helping them get their hormones balanced properly. My youngest client is 15 years old and I don't even know how old my oldest client is. You may not be menopausal, but you can be estrogen dominant and be having these symptoms. Estrogen dominance is when your estrogen level is higher than your progesterone level. If you are over weight, you are producing even more estrogen by way of body fat and your progesterone level cannot keep up and you end up with these ugly symptoms. You would not believe the hormone disruptors that your body comes in contact with everyday that causes hormonal imbalance. I was on a National conference call last night that totally blew me away! I cannot believe the things we come into contact with on a daily basis that disrupt the hormones. I am going to be on another National call saturday morning in hopes of learning more. It's totally amazing, the things we don't know! Blessings,Rhondawww.hormonalhappiness.com ----- Original Message ----- From: Ata Claussen Does anyone know if vaginal discomfort along with the changes in periods could be due to thyroid issues? I have so many thyroid symptoms, but with my TSH and free T4 being normal I am beginning to wonder if isn’t another sort of hormonal thing or or…. I don’t know. I have also gotten more than my fair share of UTI and yeast infections recently, so I guess it could be related to that. Only it seems like the vaginal discomfort isn’t that related as it occurs between infections too. I figured I would ask. I’m too young to be going through menopause (I just turned 23) so I know there has to be a logical explanation for all of this that isn’t that (when I type things in a search engine that comes up). -Ata
Guest guest
it's all hormonal Ata. If you have your thyroid hormones off, your estrogen, progestrin and other 'female' hormones are off and your body won't be able to lubricate itself as easily. As thyroid patients, we also have a tendancy to stay dehydrated, so dryness is common. Just remember this: You don't have to be in a menopausal age range to have the symptoms if your body is off. -med. strange question about vaginal discomfort Does anyone know if vaginal discomfort along with the changes in periods could be due to thyroid issues? Guest guest
Ata, you know about the importance of getting the good bugs back in the vagina after treating a yeast infection ? Of needing acidophilus, and there's other good bacteria/flora too. I battled a nasty yeast infection last summer, and I don't know if medically it's recommended or not, but I ended up suppository-like, putting the acidophilus actually in there, and taking them by mouth too. Drs before have told me to eat yogurt for the acidophilus, I'd have to eat lots of yogurt to get what I can get in a supplement. If you do this, get the refrigerated kind, as the others, the acidophilus can be dead before it even gets in the body. Also, I recommend the ones that have the multiple good bacteria our body needs. Not only the vagina, but the gut needs it too. US Jane > > Rhonda, > > I thought maybe it was another hormonal issue somewhere else. But talked to > my doctor and asked her about seeing an endo. Guest guest
Ata, If you are like me and allergic to yogurt, you can get your doc to prescribe borax suppository tablets to neutralize the vaginal area. I don't use these, however I do use vinegar in my bath water every time I take a bath and this keeps the yeasties at bay. Because I'm allergic to yeast, my body has a bit of a problem with infections, I'll get rashes, have fevers... typical allergy symptoms. I didn't think allergies could play such a roll in my life and I had allergy tests done when I was around 14.... I wish I would have listened. I'm totally 100% knowing that if I would have, I wouldn't be this bad. Your body is trying to tell you something... your body is wearing itself out with all the reactions you are having. If you are not on allergy meds, I suggest you get on them BEFORE you try any other type of adrenal support. The allergy meds will act like adrenal support without actually changing your hormone levels. They will help your body do it naturally. I couldn't believe the difference good allergy meds made in my life. My mood swings balanced, I wasn't as bi**hy, and I was more calm... totally weird lol. With allergy meds, you will want to get a good med that doesn't make you more tired and that won't have any fillers you are allergic to and that won't interfere with your thyroid meds. Just incase you decide to get them . -med. Guest guest
Hi Tammy, Excess estrogen can cause weight gain in the hips, tummy and thighs. It's a vicious cycle, the more weight you have, the more estrogen you are producing and the lower your progesterone is going. Estrogen kinda reminds me of SOME men. They love to be the dominant figure!...LOL Estrogen is the same way and when it is the dominant hormone it can cause a lot of unwanted symptoms. I am getting ready to get on a National Conference Call in about 20 minutes that discusses this very thing and is a real eye opener. If you're interested in getting in on this call, it's open to the public. It starts at 9am PST, 10am MT, 11am CT or 12 noon EST. The phone number is Access Code is 753375# As for what I use to balance my hormones, I use the Endau natural progesterone cream amongst other nutritional supplements. Guest guest
I do have environmental allergies/asthma. My allergies are rather severe. Dust mites are the biggest offender and I also have issues with things like dander and pollen and molds and so forth. But while that would explain my skin itself, it wouldn’t account for the changes in my hair and other things. Also I am on a large dose of antihistamines (20mg of clairitn daily, 20mg hydroxyzine nightly, psuedephdrine with guiaphenesin, flonse, astelin, etc). -Ata From: The_Thyroid_Support_Group [mailto:The_Thyroid_Support_Group ] On Behalf Of medstudent2be Sent: Saturday, April 15, 2006 7:57 AM To: The_Thyroid_Support_Group Subject: Re: Re: strange question about vaginal discomfort Ata, If you have any form of eczema or flaky skin, the doc will probably bring up allergy testing. Guest guest
When I wear undies they are cotton. No incontinence. During my period I wear tampons usually, most likely the light or regular ones. But sometimes I also wear pads, the ultra thin kinds designed for overnight or heavy. My pants are no longer lose with the weight gain sadly they now fit. Some of my shirts are a bit tight, but I don’t suppose that is relevant. I have some increased breast tenderness over the past few months. No discharge either. I have noticed a bit of an odor lately, which is why I do wonder about a yeast infection. But before the smell I also had vaginal discomfort and gyno said no sign of infection anymore after the last infection (just waiting to get over all the symptoms from a previous one). I also asked about increasing length of time between periods at same time and was told not to worry about it because it was probably just my uterine lining getting thicker. -Ata From: The_Thyroid_Support_Group [mailto:The_Thyroid_Support_Group ] On Behalf Of kats3boys Sent: Saturday, April 15, 2006 9:58 AM To: The_Thyroid_Support_Group Subject: Re: strange question about vaginal discomfort I mean SOMETHING has to be causing this stuff. Guest guest
Have you tried zyrtec? It’s a derivative of hydroxyzine and a lot less drowsy causing then hydroxyzine. There is also singulaire- a leukotrine inhibitor. It didn’t do anything discernable for me, but I know it has helped others. I am currently trying samples of zyrtec for a couple of weeks. That’s another strange thing about my autoimmune issues- last year my sedimentation level was 22 (over 20 is not good). This year it dropped to 16. Also last year when I would get sick- low grade fevers, etc, then no elevated white blood cell counts or anything. Now when I get sick my blood cell counts go up. So this means less autoimmune activity for me. So who knows? I also had chronic sinus infections, received cauterization treatment for them that really helped. But autoimmune stuff runs in my family. My mom has alpha one anti trypsan deficiency and emphysema as a result. I have levels in the low normal range. But because my levels are sort of low infections stay longer in my lungs and liver. In August I ended up in the ER for muscle spasms with an UTI and at that time my liver enzymes were unbelievably high. Other family members have other various auto immune issues. -Ata From: The_Thyroid_Support_Group [mailto:The_Thyroid_Support_Group ] On Behalf Of medstudent2be Sent: Saturday, April 15, 2006 12:59 PM To: The_Thyroid_Support_Group Subject: Re: Re: strange question about vaginal discomfort Everything you mentioned are what I have problems with also. Guest guest
Hi Kat, ya know I found out after I had my hysterectomy that it is one of the biggest causes of women getting thyroid problems and to tell you the truth . That is exactly when all my symtoms really started coming out. I love my gyno that did my hyster he is a gem even though he poked a hole in my bladder and I had to go back into surgery 6 weeks later for him to repair the hole he left me and I had a cath in me for like 8 weeks. I love not having my period anymore that is a god send . Considering my monthly made me tiered and now I am tired all the time witht he thyroid stuff but i would get nothing at all done. the best part of the hyster and the fistula repair was the very neat drug they hook you up to and you get to control the pain and the amount of meds gotta love that morphine ladies wow it made me the happiest person for a night. And sleep never slept better. It was totally awesome stuff. LOL All my son said to me is mom are you just going to lay ther eand stare and smile all night.......LOL I sure was happy and feeling no pain. Before I had my fistula repair I woke up one morning and realized my bed was soaking wet and then that so was my undies. I called my mom and she got upset thought I ripped stiches and was in pain but I said no it is worse lol so she thought I was bleeding again, I said no worse she said well what is it. Then I really started crying and said mom I am 47 years old and for the first time in my life I pee'd in bed. she just laughed and said I will be down to wash yoru sheets and flipped the mattress after I wash it. you call the doctor. They thought it was a bladder infection so they gave me pillsa and i will admitt while I was taking them I felt ok. but when they were all it happened again . So i called my mom again to come do her thing then called the DR again this time he examine and watched and the urine just ran out of me and landed on his new shoes. I had a hole in my bladder right above my vagina. But let me tell you that surgery hurt more than the Hyster, I didn't get the morphine drip this time and man was I in pain but still convinced them to let me come home the nest day with Darvocet and a home visiting nurse every other day. Personally I thik I would look for a better gyno and get that second opinion your entitled to. With alll the cancers you can get vaginally it is not worth messing around with. Guest guest
That is another thing I get alot of yeast infections on my skin bascially where my c section incision is but I am always getting yeast infection on that scar. I was told to start eating yuogart with live bacteria in it. if it has this live crap it is list on the side of the container they say it keeps the infections away. I hate yougart yuk. Now forzen yougart I can handle as long as it is choc and van mix.But that is what my endo recommended and I tell you ladies eventhough he poked a hole inmy bladder he made all my pain disappear he is my hero. I had endometriosis really bad it turn to endometriosis cancer then uterine cancer . That’s another strange thing about my autoimmune issues- last year my sedimentation level was 22 (over 20 is not good). This year it dropped to 16. My mom has alpha one anti trypsan deficiency and emphysema as a result. I have levels in the low normal range. But because my levels are sort of low infections stay longer in my lungs and liver. But talked to my doctor and asked her about seeing an endo. She said that nothing in any of my blood work seems to indicate any hormone problems anywhere and thinks I start with the dermatologist. So I am going to call Dermatologist on Monday and then also see my doctor with the UTI/infection symptoms and then I am going to ask my fibro doctor in Chicago for an endo referral at Rush. I mean SOMETHING has to be causing this stuff. I don’t see how I just suddenly develop all this stuff and have it be at all normal. And yes I gained 15 pounds. But I have been this weight before without all this crazy stuff and it started before the weight gain or around the same time. Its not as though the weight gain preceded it. I know I am not a hypochondriac (I’ve asked doctors, including my psychiatrist before with all the crazy health issues). I don’t see how it could be psychosomatic either as my depression (except over things like this!) has been just fine and dandy for years, so long as I am on antidepressants and so forth. No outstanding stress, except the kind that is caused by health problems. I also do not think this is a natural part or progression of the fibro either. I have had that for two years and nothing like this. Issues with dry skin before and itchy skin off and on have been it with the fibro. Not the hair issues or period issues, etc. Its times like this I really start to ponder things like just taking the dog’s thyroid medicine (it’s the same as they give humans) to see if it would help. -Ata From: The_Thyroid_Support_Group [mailto:The_Thyroid_Support_Group ] On Behalf Of Rhonda BeaganSent: Friday, April 14, 2006 7:07 AMTo: The_Thyroid_Support_Group Subject: Re: strange question about vaginal discomfort Ata, Hormone balance and thyroid health all go hand in hand. Guest guest
I like yoghurt. I drink yoghurt smoothies in the mornings when I am running late. Lately I have also bought achidopholous supplements to help with yeast issues and I find when I take those it seems to help with my stomach too. (I have GERD that can get really bad. I was actually born with it. Lol. Only person I know who has always had GERD symptoms). The Yoplait yoghurt smoothies also have a lot of protein and fiber. I also take a few fiber capsules during the day. My gastro told me to do that when I complained about diarrhea before- it helps regulates the bowels. Of course now I am constipated. The constipation shocked me something terrible- ever since the fibro I haven’t been constipated unless it came with muscle spasms. Guest guest
Sometimes when I need to see a gyno about weird issues they send me to the head of department of the student health center because of two years ago how much trouble I was and how sick and so forth. But he is only ok, not great. And I went to someone in town who is supposed to be really good. She was a bitch- pretty much told me my pain was all in my head. I really liked the guy I saw at Mayo. I wasn’t supposed to be able to get into gyno without a referral or so soon, but I called and said I didn’t know who to see and had no one to give me a referral because the gyno said it was the gastro’s problem and the gastro said it the gyno’s problem and all I knew was that I was really sick and I had had an ovarian mass before, but it was gone now. So the person asked me to hold a minute and then I got an appointment with gyno. And right away the Mayo people figured out what was wrong with me, at least the major things and started working on fixing them. I liked that. I want to look forward to telling my patients the answer to why I want to be a doctor... my reply will simply be 'because I hate doctors, especially the bad ones' lol. I've often thought of going to UVA hospital or the Mayo clinic... some place that could really work me up and see. Guest guest
Hi Ata, First of all, just because your labs are normal, doesn't mean they're normal for you. Find a doctor who will listen to how you FEEL regardless of your labwork. I totally understand how you feel - vaginal discomfort...any time I mentioned this to my doctors, they told me it was totally unrelated to my thyroid disorder. I'm finally starting to recover now that I'm seeing a Holistic doctor and a Gynecologist who listens to me. Here's some food for thought for you...could you suffering from vaginal dryness? This turned out to be my biggest female problem, even more so than repeated yeast infections. For MONTHS, I was sore ALL the time due to vaginal dryness (like women experience in menopause)...and I'm only 28 (I started having trouble with it when I was 27). From doing my own research and seeing these new docs (finally good docs - yay!), I learned that as your skin can become dry from thyroid disorders AND sex hormones are affected in thyroid disorders, my vaginal dryness was caused by my thyroid disorder. Erectile dysfunction is in the thyroid disorder literature, why aren't women's hormonal issued talked about!? The docs I saw until recently pretty much told me it was all in my head. They told me that I'm just being " overly senstive " after having a yeast infection - that I need to relax. Sorry if this is too graphic, but this is what I experienced, and I'm wondering if you are too: - I felt sore ALL the time - and my pants felt tight...I felt swollen a lot of the time (my vagina)...I was red...my clitoral area in particular was sore all the time...it hurt to sit down! ...I'd feel kind of like I had a sunburn there (inside and out)...sex hurt too much, and if I used any lubrication, it burned...even " treatments " for itching and burning (like vagisil for example) hurt me even more. Here's what my awesome gyn did for me: 1. She prescribed me Vagifem - it's a small estrogen pill you insert into the vagina - it's local, so it doesn't affect your hormones. It helped my vagina to be lubricated and heal...it was a life saver...it won't harm you if it doesn't end up being what you need. Along with that, I used Aquafor - it's an over the counter lotion - kind of like petroleum jelly...it helped to soothe the outside area. My gyn also put me on a regular dose of Diflucan to help prevent yeast infections...for a month, she had me take 1 each week and then 1 each month for about a year. This also helped my vagina to heal. I use only unscented Dove soap, and was my underwear and towels in Dreft, a detergent for baby clothes, no scented tampons or pads, try to avoid spermicide for birth control. These things REALLY REALLY helped me, Ata. Now my Holistic doc is treating me for my thyroid disorder based on my symptoms, not just my labs. As I'm going through treatment, I'm getting better and better...my vaginal problems are just about gone, it seems. SO, there is hope...I know it's so scary and frustrating, as we're young and trying to figure out what's going on and it's hard to find someone to listen, understand, and help you....feel free to email me off list, okay? Take care, M. > > > > > Does anyone know if vaginal discomfort along with > the changes in periods > could be due to thyroid issues? I have also gotten more than my fair share of UTI and yeast infections recently, so I guess it could be related to that. Only it seems like the vaginal discomfort isn’t that related as it occurs between infections too. I figured I would ask. I've had chronic problems with UTI's off and on for the last 3 years. I've been on a prophylactic dose of antibiotics for 6 months twice in the last 3 years and am now on a 3 month prophylatic dose of a different antibiotic to see if it will eradicate this crap. Unfortunately, what bothers me, and will be brought up in my next appointment, is that I have blood in my urine and have had it since mid February when this round of UTI problems started again. My back is also bothering me being very painful some days. Whether it's thyroid related or not I couldn't tell you because I've also just become regularly sexually active in the last 6 months and that could also have a bearing on the problems. Guest guest
There's an importance to intestinal health too. I don't know , if you've learned that area too. I did some, years ago per a doc who was looking into for herself and other patients that hadn't responded to regular protocols. Antibiotics kill the good bacteria in the gut, so food doesn't stay in the gut as long, so nutrients that otherwise would be sucked from the food don't get into the body, so the body weakens, the immune system weakens which sets us up for more problems that need antibiotics to take care of, which kill the good bacteria in the gut, that make it so food doesn't stay in there as long so nutrients that otherwise would taken from the food doesn't happen to the extent needed, so immune system gets compromised etc. Could be getting uti's and such from a weakened immune system from antibiotics rx'd to kill those bugs. It's just important to do all we can, for food to stay in the gut as long as needed to get all the intended nutrients from it. Guest guest
Have you ever been tested for H. Pylori? That can affect digestion. I had H. Pylori and was treated for it at the beginning of 2003. Didn’t help out with my stomach issues, but I did gain weight. A lot of people who are treated for it do gain weight. I loved it when I saw that study- proved that I was right because everyone thought I was crazy when I kept saying that getting rid of it made me gain weight. -Ata From: The_Thyroid_Support_Group [mailto:The_Thyroid_Support_Group ] On Behalf Of rjane1955 Sent: Monday, April 17, 2006 12:13 AM To: The_Thyroid_Support_Group Subject: Re: strange question about vaginal discomfort There's an importance to intestinal health too.
