Guest guest
Dolores you right about it being a furniture stores its been around for as long as I can remember. I thought about the freight elevator being a liability issue too. Doug at the moment was bad he is overly protective of me. I did get him calmed down and indicated that not all places are accessible as we would like them to be. I wasn't upset just another bump in the road. We'll just go to another store .............Flora
Guest guest
Hi Delores Most of the businesses i dealt with were Resturants, Hotels,Nursing homes, Hospitals ,and once i dealt with a Furniture Co. that was moving do to a fire .Being that they were fixing this new building to accommidate their needs they were required to bring the bathrooms up to ADA . But if they didnt have that fire the old building grandfathered so didnt have to update .I beleive each Local has alot of their own rules .It's my understanding that Your local can upgrade the Federal standards but have to maintain the Federal guidelines as a minimum standard .As for elevator safety it use to be law that every 6 months they had to be inspected .but i dont know but i beleive each state has it's own rules now on this .I think we have businesses that care and those that dont .yes if they designate an elevator as for feight it's off limits .Like bathrooms we went to a clothing store once and my sister neede to use the bathroom the clerk said it's not for public use sorry (Lands End Outlet) well needless to say we all walked out she said out loud they dont let you use there bathrooms here .and about 12 people walked out also .We had those clerks stunned .She wrote Lands End and they apologized and stated the manager of the store made that rule up and she was gone now .We can Boycott these businesses if we choose .But pressure can be put on these businesses .If you tell them your local Congressman will hear it gets their attention GEO (PS ) ive always been a rabelrouser i enjoy getting down on people who make excuses why they should be exempt from Rules that benefit some one other than themselves . Guest guest
I'm also working on ADA compliance in my community. Our clubhouse was built two years ago, and while the bathrooms have a large, accessible stall, there's no way to get into the bathroom unless someone opens the door for you and waits to open it again to go out. Many of the doors in and out of the clubhouse have buttons that will open the doors, but there isn't one for any of the bathrooms. I am now hoping that the president of the building company will respond to my email. It's such a small thing to them, but so necessary for us. Guest guest
Flora: I bet you are referring to Kane's on US 19. I had the same experience but I seem to remember using an elevator. Maybe it was just working that day or it was the freight elevator, but I know we did see dinette sets upstairs. There are other, newer Kanes stores in the area, like Clearwater, and I'll bet they have an elevator.
