Guest guest
Glennys, You WANT dumping syndrome my dear. It is what makes our gastric bypass surgery successful over the " old " weight loss surgery that simply made our stomachs smaller. I made the mistake of " picking " at a piece of rhubarb pie the other night and within minutes I was laying down, sweating, heart beating, feeling sicker than sick. This episode of dumping put me right in my place with food. Some do not have dumping and I feel sorry for them. I could not keep this weight off if I could eat sweets and high fat. No way. It keeps me honest. Was this not explained to you? Are you sure you had the RNY surgery and not a VBG instead? Jan C. RNY 3-11-98 Dumping Syndrome >Hi everyone. I'm new on this list. Guest guest
Just to pipe in: I am able to reset my dumpometer, never as profound as some had it, but always unpleasant, by just going cold turkey on any sugar and most flour for just a few days to a week. I was just on a trip and it caused me to pass up many bakery cases until I found one with a scone with very little sugar in it...still a little carby but it didn't make me get the shakes....my version of dumping. Also, I was snacking on crackers late at night since I knew how to cook them....(you just open the bag ;-) and my trainer at least got me on whole grain stuff which actually has a richer, earthier taste and doesn't make the sugar chemistry go wild. It is what makes our gastric bypass surgery successful over the " old " weight loss surgery that simply made our stomachs smaller. < AMEN AMEN AMEN!!! We had a BIG discussion in the AMOS chat room last week about this. Someone there just could not understand why I was glad that I dumped. I tried to explain it to her, but she just kept saying that I was weird for being glad that I had dumping. " How can you put your body through all that? " she would ask and she was convinced that having dumping would " ruin " my wls. I tried to tell her that I DON'T dump because I AVOID everything that causes it. If I did eat sugar, I would dump...so I just don't eat anything with sugar in it. Period. I have only dumped 6 times in 20 months...all but the first time were because I accidentally ingested too much sugar. And one of those times was a little over a month ago, so I know that still have it. I thank God for dumping! When I see a piece of cake, I do not see a yummy desert anymore...I see death on a plate..lol. It holds no temptation for me, because I know how rotten it would make me feel. I cannot eat anything with more than 4 grams of sugar in it. Now, fruits...I can handle and even milk products. Natural sugars are fine...seems like its just refined sugars that bother me. Just wanted to share.. Guest guest
I cannot agree more - I have gone 15 mos with no refined sugar at all. In my mind - it will make me dump and I want to keep it that way. A girl in my support group, has had sugar almost from the start and it makes me nervous to see her eat the sugar. It just seems that she is asking for the sugar demons to come back. If it works for her - cool. It doesn't work for me. I am planning on NOT testing the dumping syndrome for as long as I can. Forever if I am lucky. That is one place I definitely do not want to go. LOVE Janelle Lou wrote: > You WANT dumping syndrome my dear. Guest guest
I have also chosen not to test the sugar demon. It has been 18 mos and I don't crave it at all. I feel better and am maintaining my weight just fine. I met a man who asked me to come and speak with him about my success as he was having some difficulty - well I got there and he was eating everything in sight - cake, cookies - and incredibly fast. I come to find out that he doesn't have a bypass - his surgeon didn't recommend it - just a stapling. I told him he should eat as if he had the bypass and expected to dump. I'm afraid my advice fell on deaf ears. Marjie
Guest guest
I'm with you. I don't WANT to dump, so I do my best to avoid it. However, I'm glad I do. Sorta reminds me of the bumpers on bumper cars or something. Just a safety net for a very imperfect me. Guest guest
I totally agree. I answered Dawn in much the same way except it only went to her and not the group. I need the " behavior modification " that dumping creates. My surgeon said it is the key for his patients. I would not recommend this surgery to someone like myself if it did not cause dumping. What works for one does not always work for everyone. I was just shocked that the girl did not know that some of us WANT dumping or that it is part of it... Guest guest
Yes, it's hard to describe. You WANT dumping so you can AVOID doing it. I need that threat.
