Guest guest
Hi... I am writing for my 76 year old dad...he had a 1.5cm pit tumor removed feb 7...he just recently got his bloodwork reviewed....I wanted to post it here to get responses from you guys.......does anyone out there have anemia with all this thyroid stuff....his bloodcount is low...but I don't have those results here..I was wondering if there was a connection?...also before they removed his tumor he was hypothyroid for several months and was on levoxyl 50 meg...they took him off of that 3 weeks ago and I guess from these tests results it shows he is no longer hypothyroid...so that is good.....thanks for all your comments and advise...you guys are very special!..... value normal range sodium serum 142 137-145 thyroid stim hormone 3.450 0.300-5.00 free thyroxine (t4) 0.7 0.7-1.9 free triiodothyronin 3.1 2.8-5.3 prolactin 9.6 2.1-17.7 testosterone 91 low 350-720 testosterone free 14.2 low 47.0-244.0 somatomedin c 102 35-213 cort baseline 6.3 3.0 cort 30 ,min 13.7 cort 60 15.8 low 18.0 the following were comments from the doctor " as you can see above your testing revealed a low testosterone level and we will need to discuss the possible benefits of testosterone replacement therapy although at age 76 it is very controversial and I would like to see you in the office to review the potential benefits and risks of therapy. Your cortisol production did not quite exceed the threshold of 18 and we will need to continue prednisone therapy for now although I would like you to change your dose to 5 mg every morning without the afternon dose of 2.5 mg that you were taking. It is still possible that your testosterone production will recover and that you may not need to take prednisone indefinitely. We will plan to repeat testing when I see you in June "

Do be aware red blood cells have a 90 day cycle..so he will want to be retested on his iron every 90 days.. kats3boys

Guest guest
When I was diagnosed my iron levels were so low, that I was almost put into hospital and given a blood transfusion. I don't see a Free T3 result there, did they do it?? His TSH looks very high, is he on thyroid meds?? the T4 looks low, T4 converts into T3 which is why we need the FreeT3 results. You are a great daughter caring about your Dad I'm in Australia, it's morning and I've gotta go out, there are people here who can help. go to these websites http://www.thyrophoenix.com/ www.stopthethyroidmadness.com http://thyroid.about.com/ Lots of info........welcome to the group!!........................Meleese in Oz xxx Hi... Guest guest
Roseyposeyme His T4 is grossly low, right at rock bottom. Have you seen any of his past T4 testing? Is it on it's way up, or is it on it's way down? Yes, the testosterone is very low, but I'm wondering if the doc expects it to pick up on it's own, as an adjunct to the pituitary surgery? This, I don't know. Seems like a little testosterone would give him more vitality, no matter what his age. His cortisol really took a dip, but I don't really understand this particular form of testing either. IMO, maybe I'm wrong, but it looks to me like June is awfully far away to be retesting. Seems like the doc would be retesting around 6 wks or so from now, IF he had these blood draws in either Feb or March. advise on bloodwork results > Hi... > > I am writing for my 76 year old dad...he had a 1.5cm pit tumor > removed feb 7...he just recently got his bloodwork reviewed....I > wanted to post it here to get responses from you guys.......does > anyone out there have anemia with all this thyroid stuff....his > bloodcount is low...but I don't have those results here..I was > wondering if there was a connection?...also before they removed his > tumor he was hypothyroid for several months and was on levoxyl 50 > meg...they took him off of that 3 weeks ago and I guess from these > tests results it shows he is no longer hypothyroid...so that is > good.....thanks for all your comments and advise...you guys are very > special!..... > value normal range > sodium serum 142 137-145 > thyroid stim hormone > 3.450 0.300-5.00 > free thyroxine (t4) > 0.7 0.7-1.9 > free triiodothyronin > 3.1 2.8-5.3 > prolactin 9.6 2.1-17.7 > testosterone 91 low 350-720 > testosterone free > 14.2 low 47.0-244.0 > somatomedin c 102 35-213 > cort baseline 6.3 3.0 > cort 30 ,min 13.7 > cort 60 15.8 low 18.0 > > the following were comments from the doctor " as you can see above > your testing revealed a low testosterone level and we will need to > discuss the possible benefits of testosterone replacement therapy > although at age 76 it is very controversial and I would like to see > you in the office to review the potential benefits and risks of > therapy. Guest guest
The doc makes a couple of comments... but nothing about the low thyroid levels... The TSH (thyroid stim hormone) is too high, current range is .3 to 3.0 he's over that at 3.45. Anything over 2.0 is cause for determining what is wrong and starting supplementation. With the pituitary surgery to remove the tumor.. that makes the TSH even less accurate as far as using it for a guideline.. More attention needs to be paid to the thyroid hormone levels (TSH is a pituitary hormone). They did test the frees, but don't seem to be understanding what the results indicate. The Free T4 (free thyroxine) is rock bottom. Not leaving enough hormone for adequate conversion and that's reflected in the Free T3 (free triiodthyronin) result which is also far too low for your dad to be feeling well.... Are they going to be putting him back on thyroid hormone... he VERY much needs it... IMHO, of course. Low iron levels (and ferritin) are common with hypo it's a good idea to check both levels, many of us need to take extra iron. Personally I'd be doing some door banging to get the hormone levels up (either by staring the thyroid meds again, or adding to what he's taking) and then get another blood draw in six weeks.
