WELL SAID!!!! You go girl!!

[ ] Profound remarks from Sen. Landrieu

Karyn,

I would love to join the effort to educate Sen. Landrieu about our

children. I would love to educate the country about this Senators

apparent lack of knowledge on a subject that we live every day. I

have read and re-read the Senators remarks, even printing a copy of

her statement so I could read again and highlight. I was hoping

that my morning coffee just hadn't kicked in yet. Now I fight back

tears and anger. What a wonderful solution this senator has for my

child and all children like him. If only I were educated? If only

this silly Masters Degree in Speech Pathology with a Minor in

Education would have allowed me to know what my child " needed " I

could have spared him. Now I am pursuing my Doctorate in Speech

Pathology....I wonder if I will be smart enough to raise my son when

I earn that 3rd college degree? How simple it is to slap a label on

we parents as simply neglectful and stupid. How easy to divide and

polarize us with her demoralizing and crass remarks. After all, she

pits the educated against the uneducated; those parents with " real "

special needs children vs. those of us who were just too ignorant

and neglectful to " look directly in the eyes of a child, to speak

with clear diction, to actually show them how to speak and to talk

to children.... " . The statistics have shown that children with

speech and language disorders come from all socioeconomic classes,

all races, all religions. I am not foolish enough to believe that

my education makes me a better parent than the parent who did not

graduate high school. While my financial resources allow me to

provide my child with a multitude of language and speech

opportunities, it hasn't bought my child a " cure " . My child has

Verbal Apraxia. I did nothing to cause it. I did not neglect my

child. I spoke with " clear diction " , read to him at night, spoke

with him like any other child, and continue to have high

expectations for my childs future. My child will grow up to be a

productive member of society. Senator Landrieu did get one thing

right: " There is nothing wrong with the way God made their brain or

fashioned it " . My son will overcome his disability, and is smart

and loving and precious. I wonder....can senator Landrieu overcome

her supreme ignorance? Who is to blame for her apparent lack of

knowledge in the area of speech and language disorders? Maybe her

parents didn't read to her at night........

I really hate to refer to Sowell's " Late-Talking Children book " but

(from what I remember when I read it 3 years ago) he refers to what he calls

the Einstein Syndrome. He says that often late-talking children come from

certain types of parents: engineers, pilots, science and math focused

people, etc. This stuck in my mind because my husband is a pilot and majored

in biochemistry. He is more of a " geeky " sort. I have a long history of

artists, engineers, and computer geeks in my family. (My brother is one of

those folks who has lunch with Bill Gates.)

Further, I was a social worker in my former life so I was the one guiding

others to make better choices and implement better habits (i.e. reading to

their kids). So I was well aware of healthy parenting practices.

I think I remember saying that there was some sort of correlation

between communication-impairments and high IQ's (correct me if I am wrong).

P.S. the reason I hate referring to Sowell's book is because I think it

misleads parents into thinking that they don't need to intervene and get

help early for their children. Granted my memory could be foggy since I read

it so long ago (and then got rid of it).

dignify her vote to make it look as if she " was the wiser " . I'm not a

No one wants to have a child with a speech or language disorder, or any

other disability. This is not something we plan, or even imagine will

happen. But in reality, IT DOES. Rather than hold the position that we are

simply uneducated and don't raise our children right, wouldn't she have been

the shining star if she came forth and said " let's work EARLIER to make

their lives BETTER? " She won't overcome her ignorance, because her status

gives her that " opportunity. " And I think her ignorance should be exposed

not only to those in her OWN state, but all others. What a sad sorry

example of a government officer, who is highly paid to make decisions that

effect the lives of others.....including innocent children. In short, I

think she is a disgrace.

There is strength in numbers. I think this is the time we need to bond

together, and make the voices of our children heard loud and clear,

especially to someone who is as blatant and ignorant as she is.

Yes, you do get more bees with honey, but I think what she did was an

outrage and an absolute insult to ME, who also has a Master's Degree, and my

husband (oh the poor soul is only a physician, shame on him) and our

children.

Enough said before my blood pressure goes stroke level. I hold on my

position to email her tirelessly, and bring her ignorance to the forefront.

I heard of the connection between communication disorders and high IQ's, my

oldest didn't really talk until he was way past two, and clearly is gifted.

HOWEVER....there's no real studies done to prove or disprove this theory. Early

intervention, REGARDLESS of what we may or may not be thinking, is still the

wisest way to go.
