Astigmatism is where your eyeball is all wobbly. I have it in both

eyes, plus shortsighted in one and farsighted in the other. I got

glasses when I was 9-ish. However, I was extremely shy and certainly

not dancing on the tables, though I couldn't necessarily see well. I

did get headaches when I read for too long. My eyes sort of

compensated for each other over all.

I was really interested to read this as I have been worrying (again!)

over DD1. History of bad eyes on both sides of the family (DH has

astigmatism and very short sigted -14!, both my brother and sister

had squints corrected at early ages) so Ihave decided to get DD1

checked out. We have an appointment at HC with opthalmologist on

Friday so will keep you posted. I have noticed recently, apart from

standing about 2 cms from the TV which I am assured is an age thing,

she has started to bump into furniture, trip over, become generally

clumsy etc. May be nothing but for my own sake I would like to get

her checked out. My sister stared wearing glasses at 18 months! My

mum regularly found them buried in the garden!

yes, I was one of those kids in the NHS pink glasses, with the arm

held on with elastoplast. Have a photo of me about 3, with cheesy

grin, wrinkly tights and plaster holding glasses together.

Apparently I once got a brand new pair of blue glasses, got home,

hared down the garden in my pedal car, fell out, smashed the glasses,

then sobbed and sobbed.

BTW DS had his eyes tested at 2yo. I'd had a squint as a tiny and HV

said " we routinely test at 3.5yo, but by then we may not have a

pre-school optical service round here, so I'll send him now, with your

history. " Beats me how they test at that age, but he was fine,

thankfully.

  • 2 years later...

had very rapid vision loss. She went from 20/80 to 20/600 in less

than 6 months.

She has Retinitis Pigmentosa. However she did not lose her vision in the

normal way you would with RP, which is peripheral. She lost central vision

first.

no longer even has light perception and hasn't had for quite some

time.

What kind of doctor are you seeing? was seen by a Retinia specialist

at U of L. She has had 2 ERG's and they both showed RP.

I sincerely hope this is not your problem, but, if your not already, please

see a specialist ASAP.
