First, thank you for your responses to the loss of eye sight. My

husband's eyes deteriorated very quickly this past month. Saw the eye

expert and she confered with Dr. Haas and it appears there is really

nothing that is to be done at this time. It has slowed these past

weeks, but he has almost no near sight and when the light dims, no

sight at all.

All the other things, vomiting, balance, deafness, leg weakness he

has been able to rally against and get through, but this is a blow

I'm having difficulty helping him with. Any advise would be helpful.

You might want to contact the department for blindness in your state and ask

for some ideas to help your husband. Another idea is to have him seen by a

low vision ophthalmologist to help in determining what things will help him

to use his existing eyesight. Often telescopic lenses, proper lighting and

shielding and magnification can be helpful.

I will keep you in my thoughts.

Each of these losses take a major toll on an individual. I am certain that dealing with this rapid decline in quality of life has been extremely difficult. As I deal with deafness, I know how devastated I would be if I lost my vision. When you lose hearing, you communicate with your eyes more than you realize.

I wish I had an answer to your question - more than you know. If he is not in counseling, it would be a good idea.

Do you have anyone from Independent Living who could come to your home and make things more adaptable for him? I don't know what state you are in but you should be able to find this under state agencies. If only there was a cure.

Hi,

Perhaps my husband can be of some help to yours. (I have had mito

diagnosed since 1998, and have many problems, including severe hearing

loss.)

My husband had 20/20 vision all of his life, until early last year

when his eyes started to blur. At that time he was spending many hours

on the computer, designing a website. He initially attributed his

problem to overuse.

Alas, he had developed macular degeneration. He gets treatment at an eye

hospital in NYC. We have found the best low vision specialists to be

optometrists. The MD's in the field just seem to offer no practical

solutions. However, is both very tenacious and an engineer. He uses

a plethora of lights and magnifiers and glasses and is functioning with

some success.

He is seen by a low vison specialist in New Jersey whom I woud highly

recommend. However, Dr. Haas is in California, is he not? A regular

optometristtt isn't of much help, just one who is an active low vision

specialist.

And there aren't too many around.

If we can be of any help, RSVP! I could give you 's email address.

Sending you the warmest of wishes!

Sincerely,

Pennsylvania
