Guest guest
Theresa -I LOVE Dr. Stordy and have the honor to meet her when I booked her and the rest for an apraxia conference in NC http://www.cherab.org/news/events.html Actually, both my boys started on Efalex -and Tanner's amazing results are in her book The LCP Solution -the first story under apraxia (which you'll read in the book -but you can also read online) http://www.drstordy.com/stories.html In fact that's how I met Malcolm Nicholl -her co-author who is also the co-author with neurodevelopmental pediatrician Marilyn Agin MD and I. We kind of cover the difference between the Efalex formula and ProEFA a bit more in the paperback book of The Late Talker then we do in the hardcover. What we found as a group is that both formulas work -but that you can use a much lower dosage of EFAs when you have the higher EPA over DHA with the GLA. The only other difference is that Efalex (low EPA) uses primrose oil and ProEFA uses borage seed oil for the Omega 6. There are theories on why each company thinks the one or the other is better. Both have strong anti inflammatory properties. Another school of thought that may work would be instead of small dosages like we are using that are working - ultra high mega dosages of DHA or DHA/EPA that leave out the GLA altogether have been reported to work in a few cases. Can you overdose on fish oil even? -you 'can' on water and oxygen. As far as overdosing on fish oil - you'd probably drown your kid on the water or juice you put the fish oil in before you got that much fish oil into him or her to find out! The only exception would be if you use cod liver oil or any oil from the liver of the fish. Fish oil made from the liver of the fish 'naturally' contains vitamin A. For 'most' here -just one a day of ProEFA will be great to start. Conservative dosage -but true. Here is the history http://www.cherab.org/information/historyEFA.html And you know all about infant formula/food now too. (for example) http://www.beechnut.com/Our%20Baby%20Food/Article_First_Advantage.asp Here's an old archive: http://www.cherab.org/information/dietaryeffects/efatips.html#Here And back to the wonderful and brilliant Dr. Jackie Stordy -I love her quote on fish oil for all that ask about it for specific therapeutic dosages etc.: " Fish oil is still a blunt tool " Hope that changes soon! In the meantime -EFAs are still be studied for everything from heart disease and cancer to psychological diseases and gastrointestinal disorders. Even the Fountain of Youth? (who ever thought it would be fish oil in that fountain?!) http://www.news-medical.net/?id=5846 If you have a specific question for Dr. Stordy let me know -and I'll post her response back here. For the person that asked about the other brand -the body changes the EFAs -but the transaction isn't the same as when you just take the right formula to start. I also know that more isn't always better. When you give the other EFAs mixed in for example -you can raise the Omega 3 at times too high over the Omega 6 -and the GLA in the formula you are using is a bit low to start. I would say -just try taking that one yourself -and starting your child on the formula (doesn't have to be name brand) most use with moderate to dramatic results in a day to three weeks - and then you let us know if it was worth it (and what you see...and hear!) =====
Guest guest
Theresa, Did you ever find your answer to this? On my bottle of DHA Jr (which I give to my typically developing 3 year old) it lists that 4 soft gels of the product is serving size. On the front of the bottle is says " for children two year and up " . I would not recommend DHA Junior to anyone looking to help their child with speech. According to anecdotal reports from this group and the ECHO group www.apraxia.ca , DHA Junior did not help with speech. I am giving it to my typically developing daughter b/c I am trying to use it up. I bought it a while back by mistake. I think that the amount of EFAs in baby formula is about the same as in one ProEFA so you could extrapolate from that to come up with what your child could safely have, in my parent opinion. Don't parents feed toddlers fish sticks? I wonder how much EFA's are in an average fish stick. (We never fed our kids fish b/c I was afraid of the PCBs and mercury.) Guest guest
We use ProEFA for my son (who has apraxia). I know that Nordic Naturals just came out with ProEFA Jr ( I think that is what it is called -- ???) which are half doses of a regular ProEFA capsule. I am about to order some of that ProEFA Jr for my daughter to use once we are out of DHA, Jr. Some families prefer other brands like coromega, etc. Tricia Morin North Carolina Roxanne wrote: So what should a speech delayed child be taking instead of DHA Jr?
