-- Cleveland Visit

Hi everyone. Well, the rheumatologist I'm going to see in Cleveland got me in to see a Dr. Tsao there for the mito. Does anyone know anything about him? The gastric emptying study showed that the eggs emptied my stomach in 118 minutes with the normal being 90 minutes. The test was still abnormal he said, although he didn't say if it meant I have gastroparesis. Dr. Falk didn't think this was significant enough to contribute to my symptoms. He did say that motility can change from day to day though. He didn't really say why he thought I have such an abnormal amount of bacteria, just said he wants me to have more motility tests done

Hi Hanna,

When I first was tested for GI dysmotility, my gastric emptying study came back only midly delayed. Then they did a manometry of my stomach and small intestine by putting a tube down my nose to measure the contractions. The manometry showed very little activity in my stomach and disorganized activity in my small intestine. I was placed on IV nutrition and have been on that for 10 yrs. So, despite having mildly abnormal results on one test and moderately abnormal results on another, I am unable to eat much. I think the tests do change from day to day and an abnormal result just points towards a problem in general, but the severity (like many things in mito disease) can change from day to day.

I also have bacterial overgrowth in my small intestine. This basically just means that the bacteria just sit there and overgrow b/c the motility doesn't sweep them through properly.

This is just another sign of motility issues and they treat me with antibiotics.

Have you ever been on motility meds like zelnorm, domperidone, or erythromycin? Maybe those would help you feel better.

Why no mention of probiotic replacement of the good bacteria after the antibiotics?

Hi Adam,

I take probiotics continuously. This helps a little bit to keep the bacterial overgrowth under control, but sometimes it gets so bad that I need a course of antibiotics. Some kids with dysmotility that I know are on rotating antibiotics for it throughout the year. It can really be a pesky problem in patients with severe dysmotility.
