Dear Dr. Wes, I have had to have a root canal done because of the hives. Also

a

crown. The pred. leached the calcuim out of my body.

I would like to ask you a question. I have some pain and sensitive areas

aboue the

gum line inbetween the two back teeth on the upper left side of my mouth.

There seems to be receiding there. I have had my dentist check twice for

cavities, and

twice he says there is none. What should I do next? Thank God for orajel.

Thank you for your time.

Love Carolyn

I'd like to ask all list members a question about their past medical history. Have any of you felt that your CU began after a root canal? I know there's been a discussion about this possible connection, but do any of you recognize a specific onset of CU after a root canal?

I'm working on this problem and would appreciate any input or comments.

Thanks.

Don't know if this will help, but I had 2 root canals done on my two

front top teeth a few years back. The root tips were broken off in a

fall, and the edodontist tried to fuse them back on to the teeth. In

August of '99 these teeth got very infected, the tips had broken off

and were traveling away from the main teeth. I was supposed to have

dental surgery performed, but then I accepted a new job, couldn't

take the time off, etc. My UC started 3 months later.

I still need this dental work performed, but my teeth aren't infected

and money is tight (same story different verse). My current (but

soon to be former) allergist denies that my dental problems could be

the source of my UC.

I'm VERY curious to see your findings and others' experience with the

dental aspect of UC.

Thanks!

To all those who talked about root canals. Are you sure you really need them? Dentists like to make money on them. To keep your mouths healthy, brush with real (not the toothpaste) baking soda, use Stimudents and Dental Floss every night and that should kill lots of bacteria. The latest news for me is that my hives might be coming from HPylori, the bacteria that causes ulcers.

I waiting to get the test results. That's why the Zantac and other H2 inhibiters may work! I don't know, I'm just an ordinary CU sufferer but I'm beginning to think we all know more than the doctors who don't usually have any common sense or take time to THINK!!!!

Remember that word?

I finally found a Dermotologist at Kaiser who seems to know some things.

We'll see and I am so hopeful and will keep sharing. Do all of you know that there are Alternative Health educated Dentists around now? They sometimes find ways of combating gum disease etc. with gentler means. Air Hugs, Gloria

Lynette, FIND A NEW ALLERGIST!! Alena's allergist had a vast amount of

knowledge and we spoke in a bit of detail. The dental connection

unfortuneately doesn't apply to Alena because her CU started before she had

teeth however, I have found if an allergist is " communicating " on things you

find important give them their walking papers. Love, ~Alena's Mom

Carolyn,

It sounds as if you have gingival (gum) recession. Use a Sensodyne tooth paste

and stay away from cold liquids. In about 6 weeks you'll probably see a real

improvement.

What do you mean you had a root canal because of hives?

Thank you Dr. Wes, When I came out of the hospital the Derm. Dr. took me off

all Vitamins and calcium and herbs I had been taking. two of my filings

cracked and fell out. One had abcessed and one didn't. Since I was

post-memopausal the lack of extra calcium caused the mess. I had to spent

over $3400. getting the two teeth put

back into chewing condition. The Derm Dr. did say he was sorry. He didn't

realize i

was post menopausal. Now I am worried that the root canal make be causing me

more problems. What gave me the CU was Macrobid. Bad reaction.

Thank you for asking

Hi Dr. Wes, I have had CU for 19 months. I had a root canal done 7 years ago that I was never comfortable with. The metal crown never completely covered the whole tooth and at times it had a tiny ache in it when I would bite down. It was the last right lower back molar. When they started to talk about bad root canals on this support group I went into the bathroom to check that tooth. I found a big cavity just below the crown line on the lateral side of the tooth. It had a lot of food particles in it. I used a water pik to clean it out and made an appointment with my dentist. From using the water pik 3-4 times daily & keeping that site clean, the hives started to decrease. I had consultations with my dentist and a periodontist. My dentist did not have a digital x-ray but took regular x-rays that showed bone loss.

He said he could not tell if I had any infection. I elected to have the tooth extracted (my first lost tooth). I also requested and Rx for Clindamycin. I took 300mg every 6 hours for 10 or 14 days . The tooth was extracted on 5/17/2001. My CU also included angioedema. I had big red plaques, tiny like mosquito bites, big raised reddened itchy blotches, pressure hives around my waist and under bra and other area from clothing elastic. I was sensative to tomato products, corn products and wheat products. They caused severe angioedema. I go to an allergist/immunologist who tested me for everything. He skin tested me and also did the RAST testing. All was negative. He also did many other tests and all was negative except for the H pylori which was positive. I was treated for that

immediately before the tooth extraction. As I said the hives starting getting better before the extraction when I started using the water pik on that root canaled tooth.. Medications I was on/ Allegra 180mg 8am. Zyrtec 10mg 10pm., Chlorpheneramine 12mg 4pm, Chlorpheneramine 4mg every 4 hours around the clock.Tagamet 8am, Zantac 10pm. & I still had breakthrough hives.

I have stopped all medications except for Allegra 60mg & Zantac every 12 hours . I have not had any angioedema in a very long time. I still continue to get 0-1-2 hives aday when I wake up in the morning that disappear within a few hours. This week I ate fresh Jersey tomatoes four times with no adverse effects so it looks like the sensitivity to tomatoes has subsided. I feel it is a slow process but it definitely is greatly, greatly improved. My next trial will be to stop all medication & see how I do. I am going to a new dentist who has a digital x-ray and I feel very comfortable with. He spent a lot of time with me explaining & also listening to what I had to say. In 6 months if all is well I will start the process for an implant. If I can be of any further help or you need more information just e-mail me.

Fondly, Knorr, R.N.

Dr. Shankland,

I had a root canal in December of 1997. The hives began in

April of 1998. The root canal had to be retreated in June of 1998

because it hurt a lot!!!! For the hives, I went through all of the

regular tests and medications that my fellow urticarians went

through. Few medications helped and most made it worse. I gained 60

pounds; I was a runner before the hives and could not even vaccuum

the house during the years of hives. I would swell and hive terribly

with the least amount of exertion. I had huge hive flare ups with

most medications. I did the steroids, Dapsone, Doxepin, homeopathic,

allergy shots, etc. It goes on and on and on.

In April of this year I went to have a digital x-ray. The x-ray

showed an infection in the root canal tooth. The dentist sent me to

the endodontist that retreated the tooth in June 1998. The

endodontist said that he didn't think it was infected and he didn't

see any way it was causing my hives and angioedema. I was

devastated!! He said that if I wanted to know for sure if the tooth

was causing the hives, to get the tooth extracted. I went to my

family dentist who extracted the tooth on May 8 of this year. Within

a week I stopped all medications that were supposed to be helping the

hives. I went on two rounds of Clindamycin. During the Clindamycin

I had just a few hives a day. About a month ago my hives began to

get a bit worse. Don't get me wrong...they are nothing like they

were before!!! I can exercise, mow the lawn, eat whatever I want,

and take some of the medications (such as Tylenol) that caused hives

before. I wake up with no hives. About an hour later I have small

hives on my forearms and legs. They go away in about 4 hours. I am

not sure why they are coming back, but it is soooo much better. I

could easily live with these hives for the rest of my life, so I am

not complaining. I am now just in a " wait and see " mode. I wonder

if I had infection in the bone that may not be completely gone.

I hope this helps and I hope it was not too long. Please let me

know if you have any questions or advice. Thanks for looking into

this problem.

Fondly,

Connie Bracamontez

P.S. The dentist that did the digital x-ray was very interested in

the hives root/ canal connection. If you would like, I can ask him

if it is okay for me to give you his name.

Hello Dr. Shankland.

Thanks for your interest in the root canal/urticaria connection.

I had my teeth cleaned in July 2000. First hive outbreak was in

early August. Later in August, I had a tooth capped and I swelled up

in the face and broke out with hives. My family Dr. won't authorize

digital xrays; so, I gave info from you and this group to my

allergist. Last Friday, he said it was ok to get this done because

there could be an infection connection from the teeth. My questions

are: The only digital xray in my town is a small outfit that only

looks at one tooth at a time, is this the way digital xrays work? ---

each tooth and area where there is no tooth [i have three back teeth

out] has to be examined separately? Is there an xray that is better

than this from another Dentist? Would a hospital provide a better

xray? TIA, Harry in IN

Hi Dr. Wes. I have had 5 root canals over the years, and my adult CU started

a few months after I had my two top front teeth canalled at the same time.

They have always hurt since then, plus I started having sinus trouble right

after they were done. They later both broke off at the gum line (I've been

told because of the pred use) and are two of the teeth I just recently had

removed. The night they were removed, a major sinus infection flared up.

With the experiences I've had with root canals, I am NEVER having another

one done. Heck with it - pull 'em!

Air hugs,

Jackie

Life is tough, but I'm tougher.

I'd like to ask all list members a question about their past medical

history. Have any of you felt that your CU began after a root canal? I

know there's been a discussion about this possible connection, but do any of

you recognize a specific onset of CU after a root canal?

I'm working on this problem and would appreciate any input or comments.

Thanks.

Hi Dr. Shankland,

My CU started within a year after I had a tooth crack and temp.

patched. I have since had it crowned but no root canal. I did have a

root canal on a front tooth when I was a teenager, where recently I

discovered that the tip of the root had been broken off and disolved

by infection over the years. I recently had it redone, but then need

to have apex surgery. Since that time, the gum line does not cover

the crown any longer. I also grind my teeth and my lower front teeth

are very cracked with stuff coming out. I have recently spent $3000

getting some fillings redone and the root canal redone. The funny

thing is, for about 10 days after the initial cleaning of the root,

and while on clindamycin, my hives and angioedema were gone. Now,

they are back. My teeth need more work, but my insurance won't cover

anymore for the year. If I could find someone to do the work

properly, I'd have them all pulled and dentures put in. I'm told that

my gums are OK and no gigivitas, but they hurt and so do my teeth.

Also, when I gargle and rinse with a peroxide solution, I feel better.

Hope this helps.

One more note... my wife had a root canal performed five years ago,

and she now has hives. Has had for about three years... we originally

thought it was viral and got it from me.
