Thank you, Debbi, for the detailed description.

I tried and it made my heart pound even harder!

This could be because one of my symptoms is tremendous pressure inside the head,

as if I had a balloon under the skull and someone kept inflating it.

Any one else having such an experience?

How is your blood pressure? I would think that high blood pressure could

cause that. Why did you ask about the Valsava Maneuver, I may have missed a post

or two and am unaware that it is supposed to have any therapeutic effect?

Whenever I have an attack, this is how it ends. It always feels like my

head is going to explode. It leaves me very dizzy and with quite a

headache.

Guy and all,

I must offer a word of caution here. When my primary care doctor was

describing the Valsalva maneuvers to me many years ago, she would not go into

detail

on the one involving the neck or the thyroid cartilage and hyoid bone. I

think she said that it has something to do with the carotid artery and

experimentation in the area could be dangerous if one does not know exactly what

one is

doing. So I would not advise experimentation with this maneuver on the basis

of information from the Internet. My doctor knows that I am a great

experimenter, so she would not give me any information on it other than to tell

me to

leave it alone. I took her advice and abandoned the whole idea. She gave

approval to the maneuver that involves bearing down with the diaphragm muscle,

and

that worked for me sometimes about seven or eight years ago, but no longer.

I became quite alarmed when I read the posts about experimentation with the

neck version of the Valsalva maneuvers and thought I should share my

information. Please ask your doctors' approval before trying Valsalva maneuvers

involving the neck.

My blood pressure has been low my whole life. Contrary to what all American

doctors have told me this is NOT a blessing: below 100/65 makes it hard to

function, 70/45: forget it!

I read the following post from Tony and became curious:

I woke up in afib this morning. My first episode was in May 04, this

is my second.

At least, knowing that it's not supposed to kill me, it didn't bother

me as much as the first time.

I sneezed, did the Valsalva maneuvers, drank a glass of salt-free V8,

took 2 slow-mags, sat at the computer for 1 hour and poof, I'm NSR!

If I only knew then what I know now, my HMO wouldn't be out $30,000.

Am I the one who missed something?

I am trying to learn as much as I can...

Afib seems to affect us all a little differently. I'm glad you found

something that helps. I think one of the best things that helps is to do

something

to get your mind off of it. At least it seems to help me.

To answer your question. I guess you didn't.

While on holiday in France I was admitted to hospital where a doctor applied

pressure to one carotid artery. No effect. He then attempted to push my eyeballs

through the back of my head with his thumbs. Painful but ineffective.Still in AF

I wondered if he might explode an inflated paper bag behind me. If only AF was

as easy as hiccups.

None of these remedies recommended for home use, except maybe the paper bag.
