Hi all just had to tell my story from tonight. We went out to dinner at a

Red Lobster and afterwards I excused myself to go to the restroom. I came out

of my stall walker in hand and an older lady was washing her hands a just in

conversation she said Oh were you in accident (guessing why I had the walker).

I said no I have a form of muscular dystrophy. Well you would of thought i

had said the black plague

lap and yup startled reflex kicked in. Anyway to finish my story..the lady

couldn't move fast enough to leave she just say " OH " that was it nothing else.

People are strange she just wasn't ready for that answer. I certainly can

clear a room!!....Flora

Dale yes there are people who are truly interested but some people just don't

what to know. If I had said PLS maybe she would have asked what it was who

knows. I've had people who I've explained what it is and they have said why

you're to young to have that. I couldn't agree more....Flora

I'll keep that in mind, Flora, for when I want a room cleared. Especially of

I am getting the opposite reaction going to the pool therapy, of course they

are use to gimps there. Most are older and because of my young age (51, and

SueMe, just keep it to yourself) I am asked just about every visit by

someone something like this: Were you in an accident or Did you hurt your

back? I tell them I have Primary Lateral Sclerosis and I am amazed and how

interested they are. Yesterday I was dressing and the old guy that asked me

said " Really, I have never heard of it " and pulled up a chair and listened

and asked me questions for I bet 10 minutes.

It's actually been kind of nice.

Thanks Sandy, I've had this to long to worry about what people think or react

anymore. Like you I just smile and go about my business. Today we went to a

furniture store to look for a dining table. As usual a salesman came rushing

up to greet us. he asked if he could lead us in the right direction so Doug

told him a table for the kitchen. well the salesman looked at my walker and

said the tables are up stairs and we only have the steps to go out to the

second floor. well Doug turn a beet red and indicated as you can see she can't

use

the stairs so we turned around and left. Now I know they have to have a

freight elevator to move furniture around but it wasn't even offered. I also

know

they do have other elevator because we had been in there a few months ago but

it was broken. Today was not a good day...flora

Its really to bad on how people react, my husband gets very frustaited with the

stares we get because of our disabilities. I just tell him to smile at them and

to tell them to have a nice day. They usually inturn get very embarresed about

stareing, then some of then appologize and make a comment about our great

attitudes. Hope you have a wonderful day. Sandy

If you guys want you can turn them in for a fire code violation or a

safety code violation .How old is this place they are requires by law to bring

their building into compliance with ADA Health and fire code standards these

are Building code regs go to city hall in inspections dept. The elevator has to

be in working condition and access to all parts of the building for all persons

..Check the bathrooms to see if there clean if nothing else they have a violation

in there. Isles are suppose to have so much space for Fire Egress (Getting out )

under the FOI they have to give you a copy of the builing codes and fire codes

..Dig in on these people and dont let up .alot of times theyll block exits with

furniture thats a violation of Fire code Fire extinguishers cant be blocked

..Once you find out the codes you can nail people like this . GEO

if you check your local building codes these people wouldnt get by .but the

average Joe doesnt realize what building codes do for all of us .Also fire codes

you can nail these people if you know the codes because the cities nowadays hire

these Hanyacks at low wages to enforce the building codes .They dont go into

these places and check until some one puts up a bitch .I used to work with the

health dept alot in my job resturants would fail the health inspection and have

to fix them you'd be supprised how many resturants fail frequently .If you could

see the filth in these places you wouldnt go out to eat again .I know i was a

Plumber 37yrs. had to work in there filthy kitchens and i cant beleive i still

go out to eat . GEO

Geo, when you move down here you're enjoy one of our TV station. There is a

reporter who visits different restaurants and on TV exposes their dirty dining.

She shows on camera how dirty some of the kitchen are. You know, you've

seen them. My gosh food that is exposed and not refrigerator bugs and flies.

It

really makes you not want to go out........But then she gives out the blue

ribbon awards for the cleanness. Something's you just don't want to know

YUCK!!...flora

Sorry (to all) that we have to deal with strangers' unease about our

disability. I think I've been lucky living in New York City, where

most people have seen a lot of curious things so aren't too curious

about me. Mostly people have been courteous; sometimes they think

I'm drunk and veer away. When strangers ask I say I

have " neurological issues, " and that seems to work--it's vague

enough to give them the general idea but they can't focus on a

particular ailment. When acquaintances ask, I say I have

a " neurological disorder. " They usually ask if anything can be done,

if I'm in pain, sometimes what it's called, and that's about it,

except they usually say they're sorry. This is exactly how I wish to

be treated, so I feel lucky so far.

Actually, I recall now that my reponse to the first person who

asked was that it was post polio syndrome. That's because I sort of

still thought it was that, having had polio, though my neurologist

had said no. That worked out very well. It's a familiar disease that

doesn't, especially at this late stage, sound too painful or

degenerative. Too bad we have to be afflicted with an acronym

nobody's ever heard of and then when we spell it out...!

Cheers, Mata

Oops sorry you had to go through that. Some people just don't understand. It

is a little annoying though. Now we know how handicapped people really feel

right? I used to work with them and never treated them any different than a

" normal " person. Handicapped people are really misunderstood. Don't worry soon

I believe all this is going to turn around. Take care.

I get a lot of help outside. People are really courteous. Sometimes though I

get people who just stare. It makes me feel uncomfortable, but on with the

show, I say. Most of the time they ask my husband what is wrong. Since I am

fluent in mumbling I don't mind (smile). Take care Dale.

When I was at Walmart the other day, there was a man in a wheelchair

who had no legs. I was watching as a woman and her young daughter

were approaching him. The daughter, who was about 5 or 6 years old,

kept staring at him. The man stared right back at her, but he was

smiling. I thought that was pretty nice because I'm sure this man

must get alot of stares. But I think it was just his way of telling

this young girl that he was a normal person with special needs and

being in a wheelchair was just part of his life. It really touched

me to see this and helped me to see, again, that my problems are

small.

On my really bad days I use my wheel chair at Walmart because I tend to be in

there for awhile. I too have had the stares from the lil ones which I really

dont mind. I try to look at them and smile and ask how they are doing or if they

have a toy ask them about it. I really think they are a little scared seeing

someone in a chair and dont understand when you talk to them they get a little

excited. There was one time a little girl was stareing at me and her Mom got

very angry at her for it, I told her Mom it was o.k that she was just curious, I

asked the Mom if I could give her a little ride, she said yes and I did, that

sweet little girl just laughed and laughed and when we were done she gave me a

big hug and said thank you. It really made my day. Sandy

Sandy, that was a great approach. Kids are away a little leer of electric

chairs or wheelchairs. I find with my walker they like to touch or look at it

as I walk by. Their Moms always say now don't bother the lady I just say its

OK he can touch it. Most kids what to ride on it!!........we have to make

people take a comfortable approach to us.............Flora

Hi Annie,

I'm in Manhattan near the UN. Are you going to Tarrytown? It would

be nice to meet others here with the same affliction.
