Sigh of Relief

Just wanted to say thank you to everyone who gave me advice over the

past couple of weeks.

We had our IEP meeting today, and I think that it ended with a nice

compromise and fortunately no due process! They agreed to give Meg

2 days per week of preschool with 60 minutes of pull-out/over small

group speech per week and 90 minutes OT per month. They also got

her in the preschool that's only 8 minutes away but not in our

district. And for the time being, there are only 7 children and 3-4

teachers and aides, so nice ratio. Not exactly the services I was

hoping for, but still I think it will work out well because...

On Wednesday we were temporarily approved for medical assitance, so

we can continue our private therapy sessions with no interruption.

So she'll have 2 days/week 30-minutes speech sessions and 1 day/week

45-minutes OT session.

I think all-in-all, Meg has a good program of therapy. And now I

can relax about it and watch for improvements!

Thanks again everyone! I'm breathing a sigh of relief.

Check your state guidelines. I know in NJ, they are required to give

a minimum of 10 hours of preschool a week. Here they do 2 hrs and 15

minutes a day with services being pulled out. I think the extra 15

minutes is really to make a teacher work a " full " day if she teaches

2 sessions.

Wow, that would be nice!

Here in PA, the DART preschool is a 2, 3, or 4 day option (2.5 hours

each day). Your placement is based on the number of areas of

delay. You need 2 areas of delay to qualify for 2-day preschool,

and more for the other options. Before Meg had her OT evaluation

they wouldn't even let her into the preschool - just one one-hour

group speech session a week.

I hate how they do it here. They have it all laid out what the kids

do and don't qualify for, and they don't take into consideration how

severe the delays are at all. Not very individualized, huh?

I really thought about fighting for more (almost did) just based on

principle. But then I talked to some parents and private therapists

who really thought that more than the two days might be a little

overwhelming for Meg. And I thought about what Meg would like the

most, and what her schedule would look like with more days, and how

would we ever be able to have playdates with her friends? I think

she's really going to like their preschool, and she will be getting

the more " formal " individual therapy from our private therapist. So

I don't care so much that the preschool will be more " informal "

therapy for her. Between both private and district therapy, she

will get 4 days a week speech and 2 days a week OT.

Now if our medical assistance is revoked for some reason, then I'll

call an emergency IEP meeting and get her some better services, even

if it means hiring a lawyer. Let's hope that doesn't happen!

Wow I don't know if I should be pleased or worried. Here in NY my daughter

qualifies for preschool based on her special needs but she gets 3 hours of

preschool 5 days a week. She qualifies for OT, PT and Speech and receives 30

minutes of each service 5 times a week so 1.5 hours of her preschool day is in

her therapy. Sheri

I think you should be pleased! Maybe PA gives less service because

of medical assistance? If all goes as planned, the assistance

should pay for all of her private therapy after insurance pays their

part. And parents' income is not counted for qualification, so

almost everyone should qualify. We also have a decent children's

health insurance program through the state for low-income families.

I don't know how it works, but I assume it would pay for some

services too.

The only option available beside the DART preschool program is to

fight to go to an approved private school. I went to visit Easter

Seals, and it had only very low-functioning children (hate to use

that word, but it was such a different environment).

Congrats, Dacia! The less to be removed during the surgery the better.

Get it over with ASAP instead of having to drag it out. You'll feel

better mentally knowing that stuff is out of you.
