A new law just came into effect in Toronto and there is no smoking in any public

buildings, office buildings, restaurants etc. You can only smoke if you are

standing 10 metres away from the entrance to a building. I think the fine for

violation is $1000 and people are abiding by it fairly well. There are so many

people here with asthma etc. that you'll get reported if you break the by-law!

have gone to a " No Smoking " policy, and many outdoor places (such as Valleyfair)

have policies that smoking is only allowed in certain places, BUT there is

little to no enforcement of it! Which is SOOOO frustrating--I mean, people

smoke IN FRONT OF the doors to the hospital and clinic--and there are HUGE signs

saying " This is a No Smoking facility, including the grounds " --but NOBODY

actually enforces it!! It makes me so angry! There are even a couple

restaurants we won't go to (such as any truck stop while we are

traveling)--every single one I have gone to has the smoking section in front, so

that in order to get to the NO SMOKING section, you have to walk through all the

smoke!!! DUUUUHHHH, get a damn clue!!! GRRRRR....

Missi -

I feel lucky too! We are in one of the " cleanest " states I believe! UTAH!

They passed the clean air act a few years back and there is no smoking in any

restaurants or public areas - hooray! I can't believe the difference when I

visit my family in Vegas. :)

That is so true they try to but the smokers closes to the door so the smoke

can go out the door and your right we have to get walk threw the smoking area

to get to the nonsmoking area. Deb

Sorry for the blank mail. This has now become my newest and BIGGEST pet

peeve also. Mind you, we live in UTAH - with the clean air act that bans

smoking in any public enclosed area and....I think within 30 yards of an

indoors facility??? We had a clinic visit today and came out to load the

kids into the car. (parking lot is right next to the clinic exit) A woman

sat there in a her van (right next to our car) smoking away. I normally

don't do this but made it very clear that I didn't think what she was doing

was " kosher " . For heaven's sake, we were at a children's hospital! This

isn't right!!!

message. Smoking is unexcusable around my kids and anyone that does it

unfortunatley has the wrath of me. :) Carey

I hear you whole heartily! We go to Boston Children's and you wouldn't believe

all the people that smoke all around the hospital. Yes there are several signs

posted " No Smoking/ This is a smokefree environment " Ha, that's a freakin

joke!!!!

It's just plain simple common sense, It's a children's hospital, DON'T SMOKE!!!!

I have to stop there because I feel my blood pressure raising. Will we ever win

this one :(

I'm right there with you, Carey, on this being a huge pet peeve.

There are no-smoking signs ALL OVER our hosp. facility, yet, I can't

find an entrance that doesn't have someone lurking around smoking.

The last time was in the hospital and then came home with iv's

and we had to go back to the hospital two times a week I completely

lost it. I tried over 10 different entrances to the facility and

could not find a place to enter the building without walking through

smoke. OMG, I completely threw a fit and called every VP of the

hospital and board member I could! I now pull up the ER entrance,

take my kids in, and a security officer parks my car for me. When

it's time to leave, he gets the car for me and we're on our way.

Now, I don't really have a security officer play valet all the time,

but the option is there and you can bet that if I see anyone smoking

around the entrance or if there is an ambulance running near the

entrance, I use the service. What really bothers me is that it's

pathetic that this was their only suggestion to allow me to enter

their facility without walking through smoke!

One of our friends is a doctor (45yrs) with cf. Whilst he was a in-patient

for IV's he was standing outside late at night when he saw an ambulance

officer having a smoke. Ambulance officer must not smoke until there shift

has finished even if they are on a break for obvious reasons. Well this

friend went up to him and asked for his name as he was going to report him.

The ambulance guy wasn't going to give it as he thought my friend was 'just'

a patient, but he also worked there part time as a doctor, so when he showed

the ambulance guy his ID then he had to give his name.
