I would say they are probably highly under diagnosed and under treated and lead to all sorts of problems for many people! I wish there were far more practitioners out there who knew something about them and how to help people struggling with crazy symptoms...... ~a
Guest guest
Thanks Bill for this information. My doctor said, 15% of the population, but I would guess it is higher. The pituitary list I am on have growing members weekly. How sad. Autopsy reports and radiologic and MRI evidence from around the globe indicate that one out of every five people worldwide has a pituitary tumor. The earliest study took place in 1936, when Dr. R.T. Costello of the Mayo Foundation conducted a cadaver study and found pituitary tumors in 22.4% of the population (Costello R.T. Subclinical adenoma of the pituitary gland. Am. J. Pathol. 1936; 12:205-214). Statistics have not changed much ever since. The clinical significance of these findings are critical to determine. Hypopituitarism http://www.endotext.org/neuroendo/neuroendo12/neuroendoframe12.htm<http://www.en\ dotext.org/neuroendo/neuroendo12/neuroendoframe12.htm> The reported prevalence of pituitary tumours is approximately 100 per 106 persons with an average annual incidence of approximately 30 per 106 depending on tumour type, age and gender with the highest incidence occurring in pre-menopausal women. Pituitary adenomas may cause typical clinical syndromes resulting from hypersecretion of one or more anterior pituitary hormones. Approximately 25-30% will not present with these symptoms, so they will only be detected when tumour expansion and local compression of the surrounding structures emerges. Post-mortem studies reveal a prevalence of incidental intrasellar adenomas of 10-20%. Pituitary Disorders http://www.clevelandclinicmeded.com/diseasemanagement/endocrinology/pituitary/pi\ tuitary1.htm<http://www.clevelandclinicmeded.com/diseasemanagement/endocrinology\ /pituitary/pituitary1.htm> A pituitary incidentaloma is defined as a pituitary adenoma discovered by CT or MRI examination in the absence of any symptoms or clinical findings suggestive of a pituitary-dependent disease. Pituitary incidentalomas are discussed separately here because of their usual asymptomatic nature and since they are a common cause for patient referral to endocrinologists. Adenomas <10 mm have been reported in 1.5% to 27% of pituitary autopsy series in those without suspected pituitary disease. The prevalence of pituitary incidentalomas found by MRI imaging is about 10%. Almost 99.5% of them were microadenomas. ---
Guest guest
Many of the pituitary tumors don't even show up on a regular MRI - they have to be done with and IV which had dye in it for them to show up which is how mine was found.
