Guest guest
Hi Prejeantina, I was wondering why she wants you taking Selenium? Where you low in it? One of my Western docs told me that she is against this mineral because it has something to do with horse's.I do not remember the whole story lol , but I remember thinking when she told me it made no sense. Have a nice Sunday. a (= prejeantina wrote: Hello everyone, I started to see a new Doc last week who patiently went over all my records with me. She decided to start me on Selenium. I don't understand I just do as I am told. She at first wanted me to stop all the thyroid med (5 mg cytomal 2x daily) I told her I had felt better when they started me on it a couple months ago and she told me to continue it If wanted but to take selenium 2 times daily. OK the 1st day was great, but I couldnt really sleep. Yesterday was ok and I didn't sleep at all last night. Maybe she was right to tell me to stop the thyroid med all together and to continue with cortisol and selenium. I think maybe I need to heal the adreanals before I can worry about the thyroid. Thanks guys....
Guest guest
I think it has something to do with the conversion from T4 to T3. I will ask her more next week. erica wechsler wrote: Hi Prejeantina, I was wondering why she wants you taking Selenium? Where you low in it? Guest guest
Selenium aids the transformation of T4 to T3. Most Americans are deficient in selenium because whole wheat is a major source and hardly anyone eats whole wheat anymore. Also, wheat derives selenium from soil, and soils are now depleted. Cancer rates are lower in places where the soil is rich in selenium, and selenium has been shown to cut certain cancer deaths by 50%. Selenium has other important properties, including binding of lead and mercury in the body to make them harmless and deactivating the HIV virus from replicating. > Hello everyone, > I started to see a new Doc last week who decided to start me on Selenium. Guest guest
Selenium has also been shown to be helpful in Hashimoto's by reducing the antibodies. http://joe.endocrinology-journals.org/cgi/content/abstract/190/1/151 Selenium treatment in autoimmune thyroiditis: 9-month follow-up with variable doses Omer Turker, Kamil Kumanlioglu1, Inanc Karapolat2 and Ismail Dogan Thyroidology Unit, Department of Nuclear Medicine, GATA Haydarpasa, Istanbul, Turkey 1 Department of Nuclear Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, Ege University, Izmir, Turkey 2 Department of Nuclear Medicine, Sifa Hospital, Izmir, Turkey (Requests for offprints should be addressed to O Turker; Email: otturker@...) (O Turker is now at Akademi Medical Centre, Mimar Sinan Mah. 1359 sokak, No. 4A Kyzylkanat Sitesi, Alsancak, Izmir, Turkey) The aim of this study is to investigate the long-term (9 months) effects of variable doses (200/100 µg/day) of L-selenomethionine on autoimmune thyroiditis (AIT) and the parameters affecting the success rate of this therapy. The present study was designed in three steps: (1) 88 female patients with AIT (mean age = 40.1 ± 13.3 years) were randomized into two groups according to their initial serum TSH, thyroid peroxidase antibody (TPOAb) concentrations, and age. All the patients were receiving L-thyroxine to keep serum TSH & #8804;2 mIU/l. Group S2 (n = 48, mean TPOAb = 803.9 ± 483.8 IU/ml) received 200 µg L-selenomethionine per day, orally for 3 months, and group C (n = 40, mean TPOAb = 770.3 ± 406.2 IU/ml) received placebo. (2) 40 volunteers of group S2 were randomized into two age- and TPOAb-matched groups. Group S22 (n = 20) went on taking L-selenomethionine 200 µg/day, while others (group S21) lowered the dose to 100 µg/day. (3) 12 patients of group S22 (group S222) went on taking L-selenomethionine 200 µg/day, while 12 patients of group S21 (S212) increased the dose to 200 µg/day. Serum titers of TPOAb decreased significantly in group S2 (26.2%, P < 0.001), group S22 (23.7%, P < 0.01) and group S212 (30.3%, P <0> 0.05). TPOAb titers increased significantly in group S21 (38.1%, P < 0.01). A significant decrease in thyroglobulin antibody titers was only noted in group S2 (5.2%, P < 0.01). L-selenomethionine substitution suppresses serum concentrations of TPOAb in patients with AIT, but suppression requires doses higher than 100 µg/day which is sufficient to maximize glutathione peroxidase activities. The suppression rate decreases with time. ********** http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0CYD/is_20_36/ai_80744191/print Selenium Eases Thyroiditis - Nutrition Sally Koch Kubetin Selenium supplementation reduces autoantibody concentrations in patients with Hashimoto's thyroiditis and lowers disease activity, Dr. Barbara Gasnier reported at the annual meeting of the Endocrine Society. Results of a randomized placebo-controlled pilot study involving 72 women with Hashimoto's thyroiditis suggest moderate-level selenium supplementation may be a low-cost, safe, and effective new therapy that curbs progression of this common autoimmune disease, according to Dr. Gasnier of the University of Munich. Half of the patients were randomized to 200 [micro]g/day of sodium selenite for 3 months; the other half got placebo. All participants received levothyroxine sufficient to maintain their TSH levels within the normal range. At baseline, all patients had thyroid peroxidase and/or antithyroglobulin antibody levels in excess of 350 U/mL. After 3 months, thyroid peroxidase autoantibody levels were down by 49% in the selenium group, compared with a 10% reduction in the controls. Nine selenium-treated patients and two controls had normal thyroid antibody titers. Antithyroglobulin antibody concentrations remained unchanged in both groups, as did mean TSH, free [T.sub.4], and free [T.sub.3] levels. Selenium is an essential nutrient with antioxidant properties. Guest guest
Selenium is really good for the thyroid (helps convert T4 to T3) and it is also great as an antioxidant, helps protect sells against toxins like mercury, and helps repair cells. The nice thing about the holidays is you can get Brazil nuts unshelled and taking just two nuts a day (that you shell yourself, the shelled ones have 10 times less selenium) will give you 200 mcg of selenium per day. The main thing is not to overdose on it because unlike a lot of things you CAN o.d. on it in high quantities which creates a whole slew of other problems. 2500 mcg is the toxic level which I doubt too many people have to worry about. Guest guest
lol! I wish I would have seen that. I guess if they were eating 25 brazil nuts a day that would be possible. Too funny! Guest guest
I was trying to remember where I saw that. I think that Selenium can also be somewhat upsetting to the stomach. I've tried to take it a few times now, with food, and my GI was not good afterwards. > Just last month on an episode of 'House' the 'mystery illness' turned out to be Selenium > poisoning from eating too many brazil nuts. >
Guest guest
A lot of people have problems with selenium supplements. It depends on the kind and the state of your stomach. I used to get very nauseous. With the brazil nuts I have no problem at all. Cheri Re: Selenium I was trying to remember where I saw that.
