Guest guest
Sorry you guys I feel like I keep asking questions that maybe I should already have the answer for but honestly this group just keeps me thinking about this topic all the time and so I have new questions. I have a 4 yr old son officially diagnosed with apraxia by his pediatrician sometime well into his second year. What happened was that due to our concerns about not talking or even attempting noises we got a referral for ST and she mentioned rather casually that she thought he had apraxia. For different reasons we ended up switching to another SLP and she concurred that he was orally apraxic. At that point we called our pediatrician and he gave the diagnoses but it was definitely based on the opinion of that second SLP who was very very good and knowlegeable about apraxia. She gave me tons of info about apraxia and we all agreed this was our son. Then he went through the very thorough early intervention assessment with many professionals as well as the school system's assessment and everybody agreed he has apraxia. It seems almost entirely verbal though I do see some awkward movements in him at times. He walks, plays, runs, jumps and recently even started pumping his own legs while swinging just like other children his age. Now just a few weeks ago we had him evaluated privately for additional ST and they agree he is mild-moderate apaxia/articulation disorder. He still has problems moving his tongue intentionally but the only thing remaining after intensive therapy that he cannot do with his tongue is move it upward outside of his mouth. He is on an EFA supp OTC and ProEFA is in the mail. My question after giving all this history is...do we still need to take him to a neurologist? He's never been to one and I'm unclear about what we would gain. I don't want any unnecesarry testing since he's already been through so much. Currently he gets ST five times a week 1:1 through the school and additional private. By the way he's not getting it twice in one day after all as once thought might happen. He's been screened on about 3 different occassions for OT and all thought he did not need it. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
