is 3 yrs old and I can't get him to start potty

training...when he gets his bath he gets on the potty..but other

times I can't get him to go...he doesn't stay dry during night or

naps...he can't even go an hour dry...I'm so worried..I don't want to

push him...he can't speak and tell us when he has to go....he starts

headstart in Aug...they said it was ok if he wasn't potty trained...I

guess because of his disablity...but I'm worried that the other kids

will make fun of him...he is already having a tough time since he

doesn't speak...should we keep him out of pre-school another year...I

think I should but evry1 says it would be good for his speech...need

advice!!!!

Something else!!! Ben is getting very out of control..he is so

hyper...and he doesn't listen to anything we say to him..he gets mad

and he has started to hit us...we started putting him in the

highchair because he will not stand in corner....the doc has put him

on adderall for adhd...but I need advice on how to disapline him...I

have a bi-polar daughter and disapline is very strik with her but I

can't use it with ben!!!Please help!!!!

Hi April,

I'm in the same boat! Chase will be 4 the end of the month and still is not

potty trained. Like Ben, Chase will use the mini-urinal or potty before a

bath, but he insist on going in his diapers throughout the day.

Chase started pre-school last school year. It did not seem to bother him

that he was the only one in the class that wore diapers, and the other kids

never did not make fun of him. When he was at school he would ask to use the

bathroom urinal, most of the time he dry when doing so, that's why we

ordered the Lil Marc mini unrinal for him to use at home. At first he was

very excited to use the urinal at home, but Chase has regressed somewhat in

potty training since he's been on summer vacation.

I would suggest not holding Ben back from preschool another year. The

school experience and interaction with other children will be very

beneficial for speech and social developement, and may help somewhat with

potty training.

Does Ben have any sensory issues? Some times with Sensory Integration

Dysfunction, you will see these type of behavors that you mentioned. The

book " The Out of Sinc Child " is a great book to help with sensory issues.

April---

Fear not! I am wondering if your Ben and my Drew are actually twins

separated at birth from your description! ;-)

Drew is 37 1/2 months old, and started his language-based preschool

program about 3 weeks ago via the ESY program (aka summer school).

They also assured me not to worry about the potty training too. I

had Drew using the potty successfully for a while right before his

nighttime bath too, but after a while, it became a fight, and rather

than make a situation worse, I just dropped it for a few months and

decided to let the preschool program take the lead instead. I was

assured that Drew was not the only one who was not potty trained, and

on the first day I saw lots of moms coming in with boxes of pullups

in hand for their kids.

Ironically, just today one of the class aides told me that she brings

Drew to the potty at least once to twice a day, and she'll change his

pullup, and ask him while positioning him to do so, " Do you have to

go pee-pee? " and encouraging him, he'll emphatically, with a little

sarcastic sneer reply, " noooooOOOOOoooooo. " :-P So, they are getting

the same deal as we are at home, but they aren't fazed by it.

Don't freak out about it. There are other ways to tell someone, such

as giving the ASL sign for toilet (which is the letter T and the hand

movement to flush at the same time, so that's easy), so don't worry

about the words necessarily. Drew can say the words, and he's even

starting to hold himself a little, but he still refuses to use the

potty. Don't know why, and no one, not even the school, is pushing

the issue at this point. Persistence and consistency is the key, so

keep up the bedtime potty visit!

Now, as far as his " out of control behavior " , he's awfully young to

be put on any ADHD meds, isn't he? Is it possible that it's having a

countereffect than effect? The other thing to have a developmental

pediatrician diagnose, or at least an occupational therapist who is

familiar with it diagnose to see if Ben has Sensory Integration

Disorder/Dysfunction. Many of the symptoms of this are similar to

ADHD, so it's worth investigating. With proper OT, it can make a

difference where meds can't. I can attest to this because Drew was

definitely out of control-- still is, at times-- but with the correct

stimulation and other techniques and again, consistency in how you

discipline, etc., he can get under better control. Back in October

when he started, he was crazy and all over the place, and by the time

he started preschool (if not a little earlier), he could sit and

follow directions and behave like a good little boy in class without

being yelled at. Oh, he still gets yelled at for not paying attention

or getting to be " too much like a monkey " (His nickname is Monkey

Boy, to the point that he actually answers to that name!), but I

really have to say that OT and reinforcement from his EI therapists,

and now from his teacher and aides at school really makes a

difference. You should really look into that as a possibility. It

might be the " kinder, gentler " way to approach it than the meds.

Also check out Carol Stock Kranowitz's book, " The Out Of Sync Child " ,

which is all about Sensory Integration Disorder. Just learning about

it from observing my own child and learning the cues from reading

here and there and from his EI OT therapist, I realized that I've

been " battling " DSI since I was little like these guys myself-- they

just didn't have this diagnosis 30+ years ago. I was just fortunate

that between my mother and myself, I learned several coping

strategies, and am functioning normally (or as normally as anyone

else!). It's definitely worth investigating.

Just be assured that your little monkey boy is not the only one who

is all over the place and super difficult to discipline at times-- or

potty trained either. I know we've had the discussion here on this

message board that apraxic kids do tend to potty train a little

later, so just keep doing what you are doing, and he'll eventually

get it with enough encouragement.

I hope this helps....

hypotonia)

Hi April,

Alot of the things that I see you voice in this email

I am living daily as well. I have twin boys that have

both been diagnosed with Autism. They are three and

they have no interest in potty training and they can

not speak so I have just backed off for a while.

Secondly in reference to your son's temper one of the

twin has a very bad temper and what I do is kind of

massage him when he starts to act out and it seems to

calm him down. Try it!
