Sue.. TMJ, just like the Plantar Faciitis that I had in my foot... can often be symptoms of low thyroid... if so.. they go away when your hormone levels come up to where they should be....

Wow, are you serious on the TMJ--- ?

This all makes so much sense—cuz EVERYTHING just “crashed” about 2.5 years ago: weight, energy, moods, the TMJ surfaced, trouble swallowing, everything and that is just amazing that it can all be thyroid-related... I had a feeling that might be the case since too much seemed to go “awry” all at one time. I am in no hurry on the TMJ anyway, it’s all a matter of “comfort level” and I am so used to pain my threshold is thru the roof!

I will probably wait on that then at least til I see how I feel in the next few weeks with the T3 kicking in. Besides, I have one kid that needs oral surgery ASAP and another who just got out of her back brace from three major scoliosis surgeries and was just told she now needs to get her teeth braced — stress? What’s that? :)

I know I am running on empty I just don’t know how to do it otherwise... It’s time for a refueling, for sure!

You bet I am.... I had it for years... now... not... the Plantar in my foot... that, if not thyroid related IS life time, never goes away, untreatable... if thyroid related goes away with proper dosing...

The tendons, including carpal tunnel, are yet ANOTHER way that our bodies react to insufficient thyroid hormone levels...

I have a question for you.... How do your ribs feel? Are they ever sore in the morning when you wake up and you can't figure out why? Anyone else?? Does it lessen during the day and then get bad again during the night an feel worse when you get up the next morning?

Ok, I also have a feeling I am on my way to carpal — I am a typesetter/book designer on computer all day and it’s getting to be uncomfortable...my mother had surgery for it and never spent a day on a compuer.

What’s up with ribs? Yes I actually do have that and they are sore right now..Like I was thinking out loud before, I think I just lowered my standards for “good” feeling... And upped my threshold for pain and discomfort. What causes the rib soreness?

For the carpal.... are you familiar with the stretching flexing exercises for tendons in the fingers, hands, wrists, forearms....?

It is a serious of gentle movements that helps the tendons to lubricate, reducing the friction and pain.... I'll dig out the stuff in the morning.. I'm shutting down soon for the night...

The ribs... another hypo things... ties in the with tendon stuff in a way.. it's an inflammation of the cartilage between the ribs.... It has to do, as with a lot of other pains from hypo, with how the body isn't able to rest and repair like it should.. normal stress/strain/wear and tear on the body that is supposed to be taken care over night isn't and it starts to build... and become chronic pain...

The rib thing became part of my major never ending pain... had it for years... couldn't draw a decent breath, couldn't do a motion like hugging a pillow to my chest.....

That pain... like many of the other 'chronics' went away for me over night.. with one simple change in my dosing....

I had already switched to natural and had been on it for nearly a year and was discussing pain when someone came up with an idea for changing the timing of my multidosing... I didn't change the amount I was taking, all I did was change the time...

I mention this cuz it can actually be something that simple that makes the difference for us.....

That's why I'm always picking... at me.. .at others... to see what can be tweaked... what might make it better...

Again interesting...I have had episodes of plantar faschiitis,

posterior tibial tendonitis, and carpal tunnel. My feet are so sore

when I get out of bed in the morning, I can barely walk. As far as

the ribs, the soreness is mainly around the sternum. It has been that

way for years. Like everything else, I never associated it with

thyroid. I always had menstrual problems; such pain when I ovulated

that 3 times I had bloodwork for appendicitis before I was 18, long,

painful periods. Difficulty getting pregnant...both times.

Hysterectomy at 35 for endometriosis.

yes yes yes yes yes and yes lol. it's all connected like a great big circle... you'll get it better. you know, i've had hearing loss for the last month or so.. went to a few towns away and my ears wouldn't pressurize, then they got infected... they still are runny and my hearing is slowly coming back but oh man.. as a musician, that freaked me out lol. my ringing comes back when i'm tired or when my dosage is off... when it levels out the ringing stops.

Re: Tendons problems, sometimes a clue that your thyroid levels are off

Okay, reading this list is really peaking my interest because I have so many ailments that have been recently mentioned as possibly being related to hypothyroid.Right off the top of my head:*TMJ (diagnosed by a TMJ expert), *minor carpal tunnel (diagnosed by nerve conduction), *intractable plantar fasciitis and miserable tendons/tightness/stiffness in lower legs - I've been to podiatrist after podiatrist - did everything they said to do, and even orthopedic doc and physical therapy, to no avail.* pain in my right heel from something a physical therapist did to me that he's done to hundreds of people with no problem, and yet 6 months later I'm still having burning pain with every single step.*a pain in my left shoulder and left knee area that is recent but seems to be becoming chronic *(in general nothing about my body heals these days - I manage to hurt myself in a gentle yoga class! -- go figure.)*GERD (been on Prilosec for years) *very limited energy*cold feet and hands - I wear socks to bed and tuck my hands under the pillow* steady weight gainIt never occurred to me that all of these various complaints could be related to thyroid. And yet, as I think about it, it makes sense, every single one of them (except the TMJ) came on after I was diagnosed with hypothyroid, 10 months after giving birth at age 42.Is it true that hypothyroid is sometimes brought on by pregancy? So tell me, it is possible the never ending ringing in my ears may go away when I'm on the proper dosage of thyroid meds? Has anyone heard of tinnitus being related to hypothyroid? The strange thing is I have this constant ringing in my ears, my hearing is going bad, and yet I'm sensitive to 'noise' in general, like the hum the refrigerator.

milestones.... it's all about milestones...

Re: Tendons problems, sometimes a clue that your thyroid levels are off

I'm laughing.... I'm sorry... I don't mean to be mean...

I've been through everything on your list.... all chronic... it's all gone. .but the ears.... and I can now pop my jaw at will...

That signature clicking and locking of TMJ.. that was blamed for my headaches, those are gone too now...

Carpal tunnel... not diagnosed, self treated with my home made braces, that eased the pain a lot and reminded me to limit my motion.... then I decided to do the exercises after I started getting smarter about tendons, that was after the PF was diagnosed in my foot..

The PF (Plantar Faciitis) diagnosed by a doc, partner to one of the docs that called me a smart ass irresponsible for gaining weight and making up ailments cuz my thyroid dose was just PERFECT!

He poked and prodded and pulled and bent and said it was PF. He gave me a little plastic cup to put in my shoe to protect my heel. Told me that I hurt my foot from letting myself get too fat. Gave me some photo copies of exercises that would help to stretch the tendons to prevent my fatness from causing further injury. Told me to take Advil, one every four hours for the rest of my life. And gave me a note to give to my boss that said I had to have ONLY sit down jobs for the next two weeks to give my foot a chance to 'heal' or he'd call it workmans' comp and pull me out of work all together. I was up to 20 and 30 Ibruprophen 2 or 3 times a day trying to control pain. I bought the generic stuff from Sam's Twin packs of 500 count bottles every couple of months...

All that pain I had in my legs, hips and back from the crutches... I've learned since was just more tendon involvment from the hypo.. it' wasn't actual injury from crutches or lopsided ness in walking... it was more of the very same hypo induced tendon injury that caused the PF and the carpal and the TMJ.

Shoulder pain and fatigue that prevented me from being able to wash my hair...

The ears... I've had tinnitus for many years... I linked it to a job I had running machines... over the last couple of years I've discussed them here quite a bit.... One ear was plugged for a good year, could hardly hear anything with it... I tired ear washers and heat packs and all kinds of stuff.. pretty much resigned myself to always having a fan on or some other sound to mask it...

Summer before last the furnace broke down and dad wasn't able to let it run all summer (yeah, he's cold all the time, the furnace is on at night, even in the summer, so that it won't get cold in the house) that summer my ear unplugged... when the furnace got fixed that labor day weekend my ear was plugged the first morning after the furnace ran.. that's when I started suspecting allergy.

I started messing around with stuff... Ear wax removers sometimes helped, most of the time didn't. It would unplug for a while then would plug again. I started thinking... if it's allergy, how to help? I couldnt' do anything about the furnace and duct work... what else could I do?

My bed. Dust mites are allergens for many.... I washed my pillows, all my bedding, and vacuumed my mattress. That helped... I now do my pillows about every 8 weeks or so, and usually vacuum at the same time.

Last November, when the folks left for winter vacation and I was home alone, first thing I do is move the thermostat down from 80 to 65.. then I moved it to 60.... My ear unplugged.. my whistling stopped. Two weeks before they were due back, and the heat would get cranked up again. I rooted around in the basement for an air filter/cleaner thing... One of those cheap table top things with the replaceable filters.... and started that up. So that was just before Christmas.. we're now into March... Furnace is running daily, it's Minnesota... and my ear isn't plugged... I do have a background hiss... that just happens to be perfectly in sync with the whistle of that air cleaner that runs in my bedroom... Oh... haven't vacuumed my mattress since December either, now that I think of it....

That thing with hearing going bad yet some noise really getting to you? ME.... I dont' get enough sleep cuz of the TVs in the REST of the house blaring half the night and keeping me awake.... and I can be sitting at the computer in the livingroom doing it's maintenance and the clock in the kitchen makes this click sound that drives me insane. The click of a second hand 30 feet away and around a corner 'echoes'.

So... some of the stuff is gone... a couple things I'm still working on...

My feet don't burn anymore.... and don't hurt when I get out of bed... though I dealt with that for years, that's why I was on crutches. I couldn't put that foot down. Just the pressure on that foot from sitting in a chair and letting the foot rest flat on the floor could make me tear up it hurt so bad. The crutches were so that I could walk without using that foot.

I did the stretching therapy, I did ice/heat therapy, which did help.... I did wrapping at night to keep the foot flexed. I even working out a stretching routine that I could do using a crutch while laying down cuz I was having so much pain in my hips and back from years of walking with the crutches...

Within a week of starting on natural thyroid the pain was lessening. After about a month it was hardly hurting when I was getting up in the morning... Not long after that I stopped using the crutches in the house... Not long after that I stopped using them when I left the house... but took them along just in case.... sometimes, when I got over tired I'd use them... then I was down to carrying just one in the car when I went out... then I didnt' even do that..

It still took awhile to build up muscle and mobility from walking lopsided for so long... but I did a SERIOUS WHOOHOO the first time I went to the store and didn't hang on the cart... and an even bigger one that day when I parked the cart on the end of the aisle so I get scoot passed some folks to get an item... the first time in something like 10 years that I walked in a store all alone with no cart to hang onto...

My point is that if you get the right hormone into you, the kind that your body can use, in the right amounts... your body can work again. It can heal what is still fixable and it stops symptoms and pains that it was using to try to ask you for help.

It sounds dorky.... But when you've lived with a pain for YEARS that a doc said would NEVER go away that a doc said was due to your irresponsibility that you researched and found that it wasn't fixable.... And then read that it is also a symptom of something you already suspected.... under treatment of a hormone deficiency.... Then concentrate on treating the hormone deficiency and the pain goes away.....

How do you NOT tell others?

So I keep telling my story, be it the weight or the storm or the foot or the ears not to brag up or start the pity party... but to say that it got that BAD for me... for that LONG... and now it's GONE....

I'm shutting up now....

*BLUSH*

But I have a pic to share.... it's what I use my crutches for now. I talk about this a lot....

I dry my home made pasta!

Good use for crutches, ! You are obviously a very creative soul! I

have some crutches stored in the rafters of my basement. If I ever get

energetic enough to attempt to make fresh pasta, I'll not be stopped

for want of a drying rack!

I'm tempted to be a wise ass here, and act like a disbeliever,

but I don't know you well enough, and you might think I'm being rude. ;-)

Thank you for taking the time to share your story. Have you written it

up? I mean the whole thing, in one long story. It truly is wonderful to

be sitting on the brink of hoping that its not too much to hope for,

that even some of what I'm going through could go away if/when I get on

the proper dose of the proper thyroid med.

Wow. Your cloud does show its silver lining for the rest of us. Thank

you.

We went through the allergy thing in this house several years ago,

because my son had to take some serious meds to be able to breathe. We

removed all the wall to wall carpet, even though it meant living with

just subflooring for a few years. We installed a central filtering

system. My son began taking a shower just before bed EVERY night, to be

sure he wasn't sleeping with whatever pollen, etc he'd gathered in his

hair during the day, that he'd then be breathing in as it transferred

to his pillow. We also put those allergy (dust mite) covers on all of

our mattresses. These things do help. Its not just marketing hype.

There is one theory that many (not all) allergy problems are

attributable to to compromised immune systems, and it becomes a vicious

cycle, so removing the allergens while strengthening the immune system

breaks that cycle; not overnight of course.

Both my son and I can't digest cows milk. We're beyond lactose

intolerant. It was in the process of working through my son's digestive

problems when this came to light, so I'd put cows milk 'everything'

into my body for 47 years, and didn't realize that was causing my

digestive problems. I mean milk was everywhere in my life. It never

occurred to me, or my Mom, to suspect milk. We were pretty close to

dirt poor, so we never saw doctors. Sometimes I wonder if the stress

that put on my body for so many years is at the bottom of my

hypothyroidism. I also worked in a lab and performed radioimmunoassays,

using I 125, which is known to go right to your thyroid if you're

contaminated. Of course, my technique was impeccable and we were tested

on a regular basis, I always came up clean.

Well, I'm still reeling from the idea that some of my ailments may go

away. I was pretty much resigned to the notion that I was just born

with a body that was not wearing well, and that it was going to be all

downhill from here.

Now if I can just find the right doc. But now I have a reason, many in

fact, to persist.

Thank you, for NOT shutting up!

preachin to the choir with me sister... i hate allergies lol. if you're looking for some good recipes for those of us that are dairy intolerant you can go to www.recipezaar.com it's free and we've used many of their recipes. also, you can substitute almond milk if you can't stand the soy or rice.... and you can have ice cream if you want... with rice icecream... john and i made smoothies last night with oraganic oreos that are non dairy.... oh god... it was just like real icecream... mmmm.... makes me hungry.... also, sauteed polenta and onions tastes just like cheddar cheese..
