Amit,

Welcome to our group. We are not yet sure of who to refer you to in

India. We believe that there have been a few doctors in India who

have been using the method for a year or two. There has also been

some recent Ponseti method training taking place in parts of India.

One of the doctors in India who has been using the Ponseti method is

Dhiren Gangwala (Ahmedabad). The following is from page 20 of the

Global Help booklet on the Ponseti method.

" Dhiren Gangwala (Ahmedabad). I became acquainted with the Ponseti

method of clubfoot management by surfing the Internet. I learned the

method by observing Dr. Ponseti's video and reading his monograph in

2001. Since then, I have treated 34 feet in 22 infants with

congenital clubfoot by using the Ponseti method of clubfoot

management. Infants ranged from 1 day to 5 months in age; three feet

in three children had been treated elsewhere without success.

Average number of plaster casts was 4.3 per foot. All except four

feet in three patients underwent percutaneous tenotomy, with the

patients under short-term general anesthesia. One required a second

tenotomy. Bracing was initially done with a fiberglass splint, but

later, the Steenbeek brace was used. Four cases of recurrence were

corrected by serial casts. It has been difficult to continue with

bracing in children older than 18 months. We have been delighted

with the Ponseti method of clubfoot management and consider it to be

an ideal method for our patients in India. The physician's learning

curve is short, and the treatment is well accepted by the families,

who appreciate the excellent correction that is achieved without the

need for major surgery. Ganjwala Orthopedic Hospital His e-mail

address is ganjwala @ icenet.net "

It is possible that the e-mail address should be gangwala @

icenet.net since that is how the name is spelled at the top of the

page.

Dr. Shafique Pirani of Vancouver, B.C. Canada, has recently been in

India training doctors there in the use of the Ponseti method. You

could e-mail Dr. Pirani to see if he is aware of any doctors in

India near where you are. His e-mail address is piras @ aol.com

A message about his trip to India in November 2003 can be seen at

http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/nosurgery4clubfoot/message/18745

The 3rd place that Dr. Pirani had been in India in November is

actually called Coimbatore and is located in the Tamilnadu state -

South India. The other 2 places were Bombay and Amedabad.

I believe that Dr. Gangwala and Dr. Pirani know each other. Please

let us know what information you find out.

I can't believe that I missed all those messages you posted about Dr.

Pirani's progress in India, including the mention of A Leg to Stand

On! Boy, is my face red. It was great to read the specific details of

how he has brought awareness of the Ponseti method to different parts

of India.

I guess I better try harder to keep up with all the posts...

Keep up the great work!

Amit,

gave you great information and suggestions. There is one other

doctor several of us have heard of, who seems to be trying to apply

some form of the Ponseti method in India. Again, as suggested,

Dr. Pirani would no doubt be your best source of information. But

here is the info on the other doctor, found at the Ponseti Links

website (which is http://pages.ivillage.com/ponseti_links/ )

Dr. Milind Chaudhary of India uses the Ponseti Method for children 2

and under and has developed a method for treating older children with

neglected clubfoot using a synthesized Ponseti/Ilizarov method. Dr.

Chaudhary is not listed on Dr. Ponseti's qualified physician list (as

of June 2003). Site is somewhat graphic - showing external fixators.

http://education.vsnl.com/polio_rx/

(There's a link within that site to go to another page for Dr.

Chaudhary's address and email information. It seems he is located in

Akola.)

Perhaps knows more about him; I certainly would follow

's suggestion first, but thought it was possible the info might

be helpful in your research.

Best wishes,
