> Hi all, our son Hayden is doing something " weird " and were not sure what

it is, maybe some of you have some knowledge out here to help us, I hope you

can understand what I'm saying.........Day before yesterday, Monday am,

after my dh got the boys up (I work 3rd shift) to get them ready for

breakfast, Hayden wanted to lay on the floor, almost like he was ill, but

later that am and on/off all day Monday he would come and sit on my lap and

just bury his little head in my chest and squeeze his eyes shut real tight

and grip my shirt real tight.....Now tonight while I was cooking supper my

dh was playing with the boys and said honey come look at Hayden, what's this

all about???? So I tell him this is what he did all day Monday on/off. So I

sat down in the hall and said come to mommy baby and he came and sat on my

lap and did the same thing as above...........he want's to rub his head back

and forth too. Is this a headache or what??????????

So funny you should mention this. My daughter , 4 years old, for the

most part non-verbal (although we are just 3 weeks into the gfcf diet and she

has started talking) did the same kind of thing the other night. She was

crying out in pain when she did it. I took her to the E.R. after a couple of

hours just to have her checked over. Of course after the standard lecture

from the ER Doc about how wrong I am to remove dairy from her diet, she told

me it was gas. I could have sworn there was something wrong with her eyes.

She hasn't done this since that night. Wish I could be more help...It's

truely a mystery!

Karyn Seroussi's book talks about her son, Miles, having the same

behaviors you mentioned and she, too, thought it was migranes. I think

she removed certain foods and the problems stopped. I don't remember

what chapter it was in, but it's worth getting that book and reading it

through. It explains a lot! Good luck.

Donna,

How old is Hayden? started doing the thing with his head a while

back and I used to get concerned. He would press his forehead against my

so hard that it would really hurt. One day I came across some

information from a Dr. Upledger. He does Chiropractic (cranial Sacrial)

Therapy. In this therapy they move the bones in the head so the fluid

can flow. used to protest this, but now he looks forward to it.

Also, the pressing of the head has stop and the " lumpy " feel to the top

of his head is gone. Dr. Upledger has discovered (through his research)

that when he does this type of therapy his patients quit injuring

themselves. His theory is that they are experiencing so much pressure

and pain that they injure themselves (biting) as a way to take the focus

off the really bad pain in their head. We didn't see any real results

with this therapy right away, but with time we feel like it has begun to

be of real benefit to .

This all makes sense to me...I have always had migraines and when I had them

as a child, the only thing I wanted was for my mom to press real hard on my

forehead. My sister had the same thing.

The other thing that makes sense is that if they just started the behavior

after starting the diet...maybe they were not feeling the pain of the

migraine before because of the opiate effect of the gluten and casein. The

first difference we noticed in my son after we started the diet was more

appropriate response to pain. Within 3 or 4 days of going GFCF, he was

reacting to pain.

My son does that when his sinuses hurt. It took a while to determine problem. He

would rub his face against me, cover his eyes with his hands. roll up in a

little ball on the floor with his face buried. He was totally miserable. I made

changes in the household (air purifiers, hypoallergenic pillows, no drapes,

etc.) for allergy management. We tried Zyrtec without much success -- it seemed

to cause hyperactivity. Lately he takes plain generic sudafed and it helps him

greatly. Michele C.

Dear Donna,

My 3.5 yrs. ASD son also does something similar. He is always rubbing his

head with his hand or coming up to me and burying his head in my chest or

burrowing his head between the couch cushions. I think my son does have a

headache, though he doesn't seem to be complaining about it. Perhaps yours

does too. I know a lot of ASD kids like deep pressure to calm their nerves,

so that might be it.

I hope this helps. (Aidan's mom)
