It sounds like they are putting the cart before the horse so to speak about her treatment. Focus on what the endo says and see what happens.

good luck,

NOW WHAT??!!!

My daughter Kaitlin, had her 2 yr. check up yesterday with the GP. I thought it would be uneventful and that we would just sit back and wait for her appoint. with the Ped. Endo next Monday. However, after the nurse took her report/vitals I could hear the Dr. yelling at the nurse that she had "made a mistake and this can't be right". Well to make a long story short Kaitlin has lost about 5 lbs in less than 2 mths. She is now down to 18 lbs. I thought when hypo, people generally gained weight. The Dr has already made referrals and phone calls to a cardiologist and an Oncologist (scary thought); all this prior to hearing what the endo has to say. What is going on??? In the mean time she continues to sleep 16-18 hrs/day, bouts of constipation, hair loss... Sorry to go on but this is so frustrating dealing with a child. She is just to young to tell me how she is feeling and I feel helpless getting her back on her feet. Thanks for letting me vent!!!Kaitlin's mommy

, Don't ever be sorry for telling us how you feel about what is going on with your child. I for one just can't imagine what you are going through I could never do it. i use to take my dad along to the Dr so he could hold my son for his shots cause I would cry just as much as my son. It just broke my heart to have him hurting and not be able to talk and say what he was thinking. I know i am a whimp when it comes to elderly folks and babies, but I don't care. I for one want to tell you you encourage me to be able to go through all this with such strength and patience. I am glad you report how she is doing. i have you and your family especially kaitlin in my prayers. Tina S wrote: My daughter Kaitlin, had her 2 yr. check up yesterday with the GP. If she's eating less and still sleeping a lot. . her body is consuming a lot of calories with the growing her little body is doing.... It's not impossible to lose weight when hypo either, just not common.

Hopefully the endo will be able to spot what needs to be done... I know it's hard... but how wonderful that you have caught this now rather than later.... She's got a lot of growing to do and this is the time that that needs to happen..

Hang in there !

I've jumped on the tail end, so haven't gotten to follow your

daughter, but her adrenals should be tested since weight loss is a big

symptom of that. Is she throwing up, getting flu symptoms, loss of

appetite?

Ask for a random blood cortisol and acth serum and test her glucose.

I help people with adrenal tests everyday amoung other things (own

Hypopituitary Support Group

http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/Hypopituitary_Support/)

and would be happy to look at her tests and refer you to a group that

deals with children with pituitary problems and they know kids thyroid

and adrenal tests.

I think taking her to an osteopathic doc would be a good idea. Try to

find a peditrician osteopath.

I'm not sure if the adrenals have been tested. This last round of

tests were requested by the endo who we haven't seen yet so there has

been no chance to ask what tests were run. Kaitlin has had her

antibodies, TSH, T4, T3 and free T4 tested several times because the

GP was convinced there had to be a mistake. Monday I will certainly

ask what has been tested and what the results were.

In addition to the thyroid testing, her doctor requested a full

newborn screening. Since our daughter was adopted from one of the

poorest provinces in China there is a good chance that normal/routine

newborn screeings aren't done. We also believe that she was a home

birth looking at her belly button; another indicator that the tests

weren't done.

The waiting is brutal... where is one of those " easy buttons " when

you need one!!!

When is the Endo's appointment? Hypothyroidism at such a young age

has a higher risk of being congenital..so make sure a full blood

screen is done..

You want the pituary gland hormones tests..growth hormone etc.

You also want a diabetes screening done?

Chances are if she is sleeping more she may not be consuming the

calories her body needs..

Mind you this is also a sign of diabetics and other disorders..

The Oncologist is probabley being consulted to do blood screening

for Sickle cell enemia , AIDS and a few other things that end up not

reported in overseas adoptions.

Best of luck and update us when you get the results.

kats3boys,

It is interesting that you mentioned the full blood work up because

that was ordered including the full newborn screening. I checked with

her old physicals and bloodwork done in China. Now that I am more

educated about the terms and tests it confirms that she was slightly

anemic at 5 mths.

Kaitlin's appointment is on Monday, however I hope to have the results

of all the blood work by Friday because we will be going down to my

parents for the Easter weekend and staying through to Monday night.

This will save us about 3-4 hrs, round trip, to the Children's hospital

in Indianapolis.

Keep us updated after the appointment, glad you are jumping on this

and getting everything done.. not to scare you bu tthe bloodwork

form China has been known to be altered or omitted in order to

increase the child's adoption chances..

You are correct about medical records. We found that out first hand

when we were told that her immunization had been " watered down " and

she needed to have them all repeated.
