Guest guest
My son (BL clubfoot) is almost 4 mos. old and just got his DBB yesterday. He had undergone two sets of tenotomies before we finally got the shoes. He screamed most of the day and almost all last night. We took the shoes off this morning to give him a bath and noticed a blister forming on his right pinky toe. I put a bandaid on it and put two pairs of socks on him with non-slip socks on the outside. My husband and I tried to put the shoes back on exactly as we were told (it was our first time). He's still not very happy about the shoes today, but he seems okay as long as I hold him constantly. About three hours ago, he slipped out of his right shoe--not all the way, but his heel was starting to come out. My husband put his shoe back on and put the strap in the fourth hole (versus the third where it was before). About 30 min. ago, his foot slipped out again. I put his foot back in and tried to make sure his heel was down, buckle the strap and tighten the laces a little tighter. I'm sure there have been hundreds of posts on slipping, but I would really appreciate if anybody has any specific tips for keeping it from happening again. Thanks. Guest guest
Callie, here are my tips for the DBB. I have them saved and just paste so it repeats a little of what you are already doing. I put my daughters DBB with her on my lap but facing away from me. I loosen the strings and strap as far as they will go. Pull the tongue up towards the laces and out so it doesn't get in the way (without pulling the strap all the way out). I tied knots in the end of the strings so they don't come out. I slide her foot in and push on the crease of the ankle with my thumb with one hand and pull it tight, then buckle it. Then I do the other shoe and buckle. Then I tie both. I hold onto the bar and pull on her calf. If her toes don't move it is tight enough if they do move I tighten it. It is important to make sure it is tight enough so blisters don't develop. It seems to work well. We put pipe insulation (available at any hardware store and cheap) to cover the bar to protect her head, furniture and walls. We also used non-slip socks, McBaby from Walmart, Old Navy or Baby Gap worked well. If you are still having trouble with slipping you may want to take the bar off, remove the tongue and strings, put the foot in with socks making sure the heal is all the way down and mark a line where the end of the toes are. That way you can make sure they are all the way in. Also we had to put additional holes in the strap of the bar. The leather stretches over time and it seems that it is better to have it tight. I know it might seem too tight, but Dr. Ponseti has told us that you can't really make it too tight. You can also take a file to the area where the toe is rubbing. Is it where the shoes are sewn together? There might be a little raised area there. Also saddle soap can help loosen the shoes and you can stretch them a little in the toe area to help with the rubbing. Guest guest
Do the shoes have the plastazoid inserts in the back or are they the brand new style of shoe? Guest guest
We just got the new style shoe and we are trying to figure out if we need the inserts. How do you tell if you need them? It seems as if her foot is lifting out, but I think it's because the angle that the shoe is set at (70 degrees). Our last pair of shoes had the inserts, but they were the old style. > > My son (BL clubfoot) is almost 4 mos. old and just got his DBB > > yesterday. Guest guest
Oooohh, I'm not sure because I have no experience with the brand new style of shoes. I know they said that they actually aren't supposed to need the inserts because of the way the shoe is build, but like I said I have no experience with them. We got new shoes in November, but they were actually like two styles back. They didn't even have the floating tongues and the leather was much stiffer. As a matter of fact, when they first placed the shoes on the bar I couldn't even get them fastened on 's foot--without the floating tongue and the straps were to short. The guy who was fitting him (shop at Shriner's in St. Louis) actually took the shoes off and reworked the whole thing. He took the straps of and moved them and sewed them back on. He detached the tongue, sewed it back up, and made it floating. He added the plastazoid, and padded the tongue. I was a little worried at first, but they were great. has done just fine with them. Maybe some of the people who have the new styles can give you an idea about this. You are talking about the new style that just came out in the last couple of months, right? The reason I asked was our very first pair of shoes did not have the inserts put in them or the tongue padded and we had to drive over 300 miles (one way) to have them fixed--it was worth every mile. Good luck! Pam and (8-12-01) > > > My son (BL clubfoot) is almost 4 mos. old and just got his DBB > > > yesterday. He had undergone two sets of tenotomies before we > > finally > > > got the shoes.
