You said that you get Medicaid to pay for most of your vitamins and supplements....HOW? I have a G/J tube and they are supposed to cover anything that goes into the tube for nutrition or medical purposes, but I've not been able to get them to cover any of my supplements...even with doctors orders and backing. Did you have to jump through hoops?

What state do you live in? Have you tried appealing these decisions? In Pennsylvania, I have been able to get CoQ10 covered pretty easily. I also take all of my meds through my J-tube, but I'm not sure they approved it based on that alone. I haven't tried to get other vitamins, but I will be trying within the month, so I can let you know how that goes. With the CoQ10, my mito doctor wrote a 3 page letter with references stating that it was necessary for patients with mito. I can send you a copy of this, if it would be helpful to you. It's pretty thorough and goes into explaining mitochondrial diseases too. The Carnitine I actually get IV, so that is covered by my primary insurance.

When the insurance does reject something then my mom usually appeals it and if the appeal is rejected, she will go to the state representative and ask for a complaint form for the insurance commissioner. Sometimes getting them involved can help.

The one thing that I am trying to figure out is how to get medicaid to pay for the CoQ10 from Tishcon. Right now they will only pay for the over the counter kind that they have at the pharmacy. If anyone has any ideas on that, I am all ears.

It's not covered YET in Mass.....they're working on it with a state representative though. I think it'll happen eventually. The doctor fighting for it doesn't seem like he is going to give up until it's covered. I wish I had a doctor in PA fighting for us like that!

Try using that Qgel has orphan drug status to get it covered. I am getting my insurance to pay for it. I sent in my second claim about 2 months ago. They denied it even though I sent a copy of the approval from the first appeal.

I appealed and got it covered. Next time I am going to write a big note on the invoice and claim form to see the approval, the claims processors are usually on quotas and stuff and are rushing thru things. Or, the person opening the mail does not take everything out of the envelope.

They are made by Tishcon for these other companies as I understand it. You

do have to be careful, as these other companies also sell other types of

CoQ10 that aren't the Tishcon Q-gel. It usually means reading the fine print

on the bottle. Sundown also has it under their name.

It is very interesting that you are from PA and got it covered. Guess that means in the end they really can't deny me now. I would love to see the letter your doc wrote. I don't have any doubt my doc wouldn't agree to do the same. I think it is just easier for them to deny it then to really think about the ramifications of approving stuff....IRKS me to no end. Thanks for the info, Laurie. I do have a bottle of Q gel made by the Sundown brand, but it doesn't say made my Tishcon. It says made by "Rexall Sundown" on the back. I have a feeling that I may have one of the Sundowns that Tishcon doesn't make since it doesn't specifically say made by Tishcon. I would think this would get confusing if ordering over the phone or online since you can't actually look at the fine print on the back of the bottle.
